When people romanticize the “brown roofs” of Ibadan, they often speak as if these rust-tinted skylines have been part of Yoruba architecture for centuries. But the truth is less ancient and more industrial. The famous corrugated-iron roofs that define Ibadan’s aerial view today are a product of colonial-era modernization, not precolonial heritage. The Real Timeline of the “Brown Roofs” Corrugated-iron roofing only began spreading in southern Nigeria in the late 19th century, introduced through colonial trade and missionary construction.[¹] By the time Ibadan’s skyline began to take on its distinctive “brown” hue — between 1890 and 1900 — these sheets had become an affordable alternative to traditional thatch, especially in fast-growing urban centers. Counting from that period, the Ibadan roofing tradition is roughly 125–135 years old, not “centuries” old as often assumed. Igbo Cities: Early Adopters and Innovators Interestingly, Igbo towns were among the first to adopt corrugated-iron roofing, often earlier than many southwestern cities. Records from the colonial Public Works Department and missionary archives show that by the 1920s and 1930s, corrugated-iron roofs had already displaced thatch in major southeastern towns such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, and Enugu.[²] A 1930 colonial report even described government and missionary buildings in Enugu and Port Harcourt being rebuilt with corrugated-iron sheets, noting that the material was by then the “standard” for urban construction.[³] By 1938, official surveys noted that in large towns across Nigeria, thatch had “practically disappeared,” replaced by corrugated iron roofing — a trend that the eastern region had already embraced vigorously.[⁴] Modernization and the Shift to Aluminum While iron sheets revolutionized roofing in the early 20th century, the Igbo region did not stop there. From the 1950s onward, southeastern builders and traders began shifting toward aluminum roofing, which was lighter, cleaner, and more durable than rust-prone corrugated iron. Aluminum also reflected heat better — a practical adaptation to the humid southeastern climate. This evolution reflected a broader Igbo ethos of constant reinvention — adopting external technologies, improving them, and localizing their use. The “iron sheet” phase was never the endpoint; it was a stepping stone to more modern, efficient materials. The South-West’s Divergent Path: From Iron to Asbestos By contrast, some southwestern cities held on longer to corrugated iron, and later transitioned to asbestos-cement roofing — a colonial-era product marketed as “modern” and “fireproof.”[⁵] Unfortunately, asbestos came with hidden dangers. Inhalation of asbestos fibers causes asbestosis, a chronic and often fatal lung disease. Decades later, many of those once “modern” houses were found to pose significant health risks. Innovation as a Cultural Trait The story of roofing in southern Nigeria isn’t just about materials — it’s about attitudes to progress. While both the Yoruba and Igbo regions modernized rapidly during the colonial period, the Igbo approach was marked by early adoption, experimentation, and eventual replacement with safer, more efficient options. So when we look at the rooftops of Onitsha, Aba, or Enugu today — gleaming with aluminum sheets that replaced corrugated iron long ago — we’re not just seeing architecture. We’re seeing a century-long tradition of innovation, adaptation, and forward thinking. Igbo cities didn’t merely copy modern roofing. They set the pace — and moved on while others stayed behind. helinues:This is what I keep wondering. Plus their so-called secession issue, yet they're the ones settled all over the entire country, even dragging land with people there. All the while doing sit-at-home to leave the country. And fighting bitterly for the Presidency of the same country they're fighting bitterly to secede from. I've never seen such a confused set of people in my life. They operate the queerest political philosophy of one leg in, one leg out. |

helinues:It's not running away as your small mind like to think, it's called in search of economic opportunity. When we achieve our aim, we take it back home to experiment, implement and mordenize our living standard. That's why during Christmas, Lagos is deserted. I'm sure you have never been to any south East village. It's there you would see a palatial homes standing majestically as a true testament of Igbo ethos of progressive mordernity. |

Kemetian:They don't "drag" land; they buy it and pay you in full. Igbos doesn't drag land unless you are mistaken them for your terrorists Fulani brothers. No tribe is more "NIGERIAN" than the igbos, they leave their own states or region and come to settle down in other regions. They observe every rules, culture and traditions of their host community. They settle down into doing their business and the profit they use to build another life in their respective town or villages same way your people travel to other countries like America or Canada to do odd jobs and send the money to their folks in Nigeria to help them build that beautiful duplex. You can't accuse Igbos of leaving their regions while you have your own people scattered across boards. An igboman who has his or her life investments in your state will never pray for any problem in that state because they will be the one to lose. Compare Igbo to your beloved Hausas who only come to your community with his sac bag, he has no tangible investment in that community and he simply can survive by sleeping in his friends little kiosk. Such Hausas man can easily pick up his bag and disappear should anything happen in that community... But an igboman with his life investments in that community will never want to leave. |

brainbox1000:Bro, over a decade ago in Ghana, I was around the Igbo's, the only Yoruba's amongst them. I knew nothing about tribalism until I started becoming active on NL. For years, it has been the Yoruba's that have been receiving attacking unnecessarily. For how long should we continue for such? You and I know those who always start trouble with almost everyone. Those are the people who need to change their orientation about politics, life and people not us |

Our parents never trained us to 8 other tribes , a lot of our parents knew we have best friends from other tribes and never had any issues with that .. we can’t train the next generation to 8 others .. |

Kalashnikov49:I heard of a story in Lagos. A yoruba man sold his house to one igbo man. Moved out of the street and rented an apartment not too far from his sold house. One day,the landlords were having meeting...oga former landlord came to attend the meeting to the shock of others. And he was blatantly told that he wasn't welcome. U can see what we are talking about. |
