ISANLU, KOGI STATE — Nigeria News Today: Tension gripped the Isanlu community in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State on Sunday following the gruesome killing of a respected elderly woman, Mrs. Elizabeth Olorunshola, by suspected bandits.

Tragic Killing Sparks Outrage

According to local sources, Mrs. Olorunshola and another person were abducted on Saturday night along the Ilafin-Isanlu Road. The attackers allegedly killed the woman after realizing she was too weak to continue walking through the forest toward their hideout.

Her body was discovered on Sunday morning, sparking outrage and panic among residents. Protests erupted in the area, with some residents reportedly relocating to safer locations amid growing fears of renewed attacks.

Community Leaders Condemn Attack

The President of the Ilafin Development Association (IDA), Mr. Idowu Awe, described the incident as “sad and disheartening,” noting that the community had lost one of its most respected matriarchs.

“Today, we had a terrible and disturbing experience that led to the loss of one of our great daughters and mothers, Mrs. Elizabeth Olorunshola. This challenge has received the attention of our elders and leaders. Discussions are ongoing on how to secure our community,” Awe said in a statement.

Officials Promise Justice

The Chairman of Yagba East Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr.) Joshua Dare Monday, also condemned the attack, calling it heartbreaking and vowing that the perpetrators would be apprehended. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving security in the area.

Similarly, the Member representing Yagba East-West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide, decried the killing and pledged that both the kidnappers and their informants would face justice.

Police Yet to React

As of press time, efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP William Aya, proved unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

The Bureau News reports that the incident adds to a troubling rise in banditry and kidnapping across rural Kogi communities, raising concerns about the safety of residents and the state’s broader security strategy.
