Who would have ever believed the below were the early pictures of the popular Festac Town of Amuwo Odofin LGA of Lagos in the beginning.

Most of these buildings were built in the early 1970s specially by the general Yakubu Gowon government for the then Festival of Black Arts and Culture - Festac 1977

NOTE; Which or Avenue can you recall from each picture?

It is surprising how this well laid out town became the nauseating eyesore it is today. Go to 21 road till 1st Avenue. So, is it population expansion pressure or failure of the usual institutional maintainance culture as is the practice?

This place is a FHA. Hence before an additional structure is added or distortion done therein within the property can't happen without govt permission.

...Funny thing is that each od 36 state governors can build a better than FESTAC styled estate today. It takes a well laid out plan, strict adherence and some encouragement. Roads, power, water, security are easy.

Nigerians can clearly see from the pictures the difference between when Gowon built it and when Tinubu came with his abgeros to rebuild the place.

When people migrate through night bus in large numbers there, why wouldn't that put pressure on the infrastructures there? They keep bringing brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, cousins, niece, nephew to congest the infrastructures without also individually making effort to maintain the infrastructure but would blame government for there own selfish actions

Half of the people here are no more. Life is transient.

Take me back to November 🎵 (in Brymo's voice).

This was the era before diabetes was discovered. Men been sipping on 7up and Coca-Cola drink. Life was truly simple. They experienced pure happiness.

Someone said FESTAC '77 was actually the beginning of Nigeria's problems. It was a festival where all manner of witchcraft and diabolism was openly celebrated. Demonic spirits were summoned upon the land without care to send them back.
A line can be drawn from 1977 to the present day. Nigeria was never going to remain the same.

Blame the decadence of Festac on successive administrations that neglected the area. They couldn’t sustain or improve on what Gowon and Obasanjo built.

When the country was working, now they've turned it upside down.

Back then when I was growing up we hardly had power failure. When light goes off at most 30minutes they've restored it.......But now we pay for darkness and also contribute money to buy electric pole and transformer.

E nor go beta for the politicians wey don scatter Nigeria.

1977 Lagos was still FCT at that time... so the development was monopolised

What was Nigeria's population back then?

A mere fraction of what it is now.

What percentage of that population was living in abject poverty?

A small percentage of a mere fraction of what we have now.

With increase in poverty, comes de-gentrification and formation of slums. What happened to FESTAC Town is de-gentrification.

We happened to it.

Na normal average people dey live for the estate not government or politicians.

Various set of people who have lived in festac made festac an eyesore… keeping the environment dirty. Not applying fresh paints, littering anyhow, damages etc.

Apportion blame to its rightly recipients, make government rest small.
