Who Are The Indeginous Peoples Of Lagos ? by DelilahMakinde(op): 5:38pm On Nov 14, 2025
The indigenous peoples of Lagos State, Nigeria, are primarily the Awori and the Ogu (Egun) people.

The Awori , a Yoruba sub-group, are considered the original settlers of much of Lagos, including areas like Ikeja. The Ogu (Egun) people are mainly found in the Badagry area.

Additionally, the Ilaje and Ijebu , who are also Yoruba groups, are indigenous to parts of Lagos, especially in coastal and eastern divisions like Lekki Peninsula, Epe, and Ikorodu.

Historically, other ethnic groups such as the Bini (Edo), Saros, Brazilians , Kannike/Tapa , and some Nupe have also settled in Lagos, but the Awori and Ogu remain recognized as the primary indigenous owners of the state

Well that's all folks .

According to a DNA test I did in Georgia USA in 2019

I'm part Oyo 61%, Bini 8% ,Awori 13% , Ogu 3% subtypes....the rest is a mix of Sudan, Mauritanian, and stuff..

You don't seem to have understood indigeneship in the Nigerian context

With this your claim, an Hausa from Maradi in Niger Republic is also an indigene of Kaduna. Do you so agree?

Hope Lagos matter no go quench some people like this.

The obsession is just crazy lately. They always sound as if they fell from the sky without having their own place to discuss about apart from Lagos state and SW in general

They are not primarily the Aworis

You cannot come here to tell us our history

The number one group are the Ijebu who constitute over over 40 % of the Indigenes

Lagos City is different from Lagos state just like Enugu ,Oyo, Kaduna etc

Lagos state was created in 1967 and named after Lagos City the federal capital
Lagos State was never the capital just Lagos City

Lagos City has 4 Of the 20 Local Government Areas

Lagos Island
Lagos Mainland
Surulere
Apapa

Lagos Island was predominantly Aworis but not the whole state

Lagos state has 5 Divisions
Lagos

Epe
Ikorodu
Badagry
Ikeja

Before creation of Lagos State In 1967

The latter 4 divisions were in the Western Region

So when you say. LAGOS add State

Stop saying Lagos
We indigenes find that annoying

Lagos State

Repeat

Lagos State

Epe is not Lagos
Lekki is not Lagos

They are Lagos State

I did not tell you history, AI did.

I've nothing against Ijebu in Lagos. Maternally, I'm Ijebu - Ikorodu precisely.

You're a big liar if you don't share the redacted slip on here - minuscule ethnics like 'Ogu' or 'Awori' are not catered to inside any commercial database of DNA.

Lagos has been conquered by the Nigerian State and developed by Nigeria.

Unless Nigeria disintegrate, Lagos is gone for good!

You will never see them on the thread about their region, they will be sniffing Nairaland to peck on news about SW.
No wonder their region attracted zero foreign investment.

You can change the natrativves by promoting your state instead of focusing on Lagos state

Lagos was built with Nigerian resources and as such Lagos belongs to all Nigerians equally

He’s not from Lagos hence why he got angry, ask him how many Lagosians are dragging Ibadan with him, and he won’t answer, inferiority complex is the real issue here. They also attacked Lagos indigenes who dared to complain about their interference in Lagos matters .

So only Capital's of Nigeria were built with Nigerian money, other states don't receive allocation from the Federal government àbi or what money is that allocatiion from, Ghana money?

Lagos state, as did Western region that made up a huge chunk of the modern day metropolis, received money from the centre, just like Eastern region and Aligbo states, and their government used it to make their land attractive to investors and people.

How long has Abuja being the capital that more people are still coming to Lagos daily than going there?

You yourself should receive sense before asking others to.
