Judge Declares Nnamdi Kanu An International Terrorist by Putindbutt(op): 7:22pm On Nov 20, 2025
Justice James Omotosho has classified the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as an “international terrorist.”

Delivering judgement in the terrorism case filed by the Federal Government against Kanu, the judge stated that he declared Kanu an international terrorist due to his intention to “bomb the British High Commission, and to kill the then British high commissioner Catriona Laing.”

Justice Omotosho holds that Kanu extended his terrorism act to the United States of America, when he ordered that the American Embassy be brought down, in a broadcast.

“The defendant is not only a confirmed local terrorist, but I hold, without hesitation, that he is an international terrorist, flowing from his threat to attack the British High Commission and the American Embassy as well as his incitement against the British High Commissioner to Nigeria at the time Catriona Laing, a ‘known woman of peace’,” he said.

Justice Omotosho held that Kanu’s call, in a broadcast, directing graduates of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry to manufacture Molotov cocktails, amounted to an act of terrorism.

Quoting one of Kanu’s broadcasts delivered on October 21, 2020, the judge said the IPOB leader urged his followers “to go to the bush” and attack any military or police convoy they saw, adding that he described security personnel as enemies who “also bleed.”

Justice Omotosho stated, “In a broadcast of 21st October 2020, the defendant stated, and I quote, ‘Radio Baifra is now in the hands of the enemy of our freedom. I don’t know how much they paid for it, but I know that Britain spent about 4.8 billion pounds a few days ago to suppress what is happening. That is what they have done.

I told you a while back that Britain was now entitled to what is happening in the zoo, and you thought that it was a joke. They have now come with their clampdown, but they are not going to succeed. Radio Biafra belongs to us, but why is it not playing our programme right now?’

“The defendant also stated, “I am telling you people to go to the bush. Wherever you see a military convoy, you attack them. Whenever you see a police convoy, attack them. They are human beings and they also bleed. Any person with a police uniform or any army uniform is your enemy.”

According to him, such statements, especially those targeting international protected persons such as ambassadors and high commissioners, fall under offences punishable by life imprisonment.

Justice Omotosho said, “The High Commissioner is an international protected person, being the representative of the British government in Nigeria, as well as other staff of High Commission and Embassy of the United States of America, leaving the defendant to continue his terrorist activities would have led to an international incident involving Nigeria and other foreign nations, who are good partners with Nigeria.

“The question to ask again is whether bombing or attacking embassies of High Commissions constitutes an action consistent with agitation for self-determination? Again, the answer is no. All these acts go to show that the criminal tendency of the defendant, as well as show concrete proof of his terrorist acts.”

Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution had proved the counts against Kanu and consequently convicted him.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021, when he was rearrested abroad and brought back to Nigeria to face charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony and incitement.

His trial has recorded multiple adjournments, while his lawyers continue to argue that his extraordinary rendition and long detention violate both domestic and international law.

Man ought to have threaded carefully too.
He was kinda arrogant during his reign and still arrogant in the court

Imagine eastern ppl bowing to him and women laying down their clothes for him to walk on, no big deal in all those, but the feelings he demonstrated on those events, indicated he's already seeing himself as their lord also as the next Ojukwu, no govt. would appreciate that, even Sunday Igboho too had to be humbled by the Govt.

Can't also forget an incident where he went to face the soldiers, beating his chest, the soldiers were just looking at him, if they had picked him up right there, nothing would happen.

There's also a place he was telling his followers, saying he would go to Abuja and come back with the head of the president, during Buhari's regime, a whole sitting president, even Tompolo with all his heavy duty guards and munitions won't say that, can't forget that.

Should Buhari be alive and still the president, this would have been a different sentence.

Mr Man Threaded with so much pride and arrogance mhen, it's well.

Ipob and their supporters are the biggest clowns on earth. You threatened the US and the UK yet you still pleading and begging them to come rescue you. This is why we say Nnamdi Kanu and his followers are a bunch of illiterates.
I wasn't even aware that the chief terrorist threatened the US and UK, thank God for this trial that shed more light on his atrocities. Pretty sure, the US and UK are aware of his threat against them and are fully in support to put him in prison for life.

Kanu's case has been a very interesting one. The judge's ruling today would make some people to faint online.

At this point the yorubas are truly scared of the incitement of the northern people.

There's a probability he will get presidential pardon before 2027, to secure little loyalty from the east, against 2027 election.
He won't get it, he will never get it. If you guys could raise an uproar when the President granted pardoned to some people including a woman who murdered her husband and the President was forced to withdraw the pardon. How can a terrorist be granted pardon?. When you guys cry and shout about everything, we always warned you to be careful what you wish for.

Kanu's actions clearly went beyond legitimate self-determination advocacy into the realm of terrorism.

Una go too collect, you know say your region is the smallest in the country. If you are deluding yourself that you can hit and hide like bandits do in the north. SE terrain is very easy to navigate.

The fairness of Nnamdi Kanu's judgment is questioned not because he is seen as blameless by all, but because the process appears politically motivated, illegal in its foundation, and applied with a clear double standard. The state's overwhelming focus on him, while seemingly turning a blind eye to the actions of other powerful individuals who have caused greater tangible harm to the Nigerian populace, creates a powerful and persistent perception of injustice and a two tiered legal system.

I wish they would use this same speed to bring to justice all those sponsoring the killings in the North, the masterminds behind the banditry, terrorism and daily bloodshed. Nigeria will only move forward when justice is applied evenly, not selectively.

All Tinubu and APC people are doing is to distract Nigerians from the killings going on.

Let's not fall for their traps.

Tinubu if you are overwhelmed please resign and leave for goodness sake.

Fergie001 =DeepSight any lawyer in the house help with the legal definition of acts of terrorism for the sake of enlightenment

‎What Nigerian Law Says

‎1. Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022

‎This is the current law (it replaced the earlier 2011 Act).

‎Under this Act, a person who threatens to do an act preparatory to or in furtherance of an act of terrorism commits an offence.

‎The law also penalizes assisting, facilitating, organizing, or inciting terrorism.

‎2. Definition of an “Act of Terrorism”

‎Under the old Terrorism (Prevention) Act (2011), which is largely carried forward: an “act of terrorism” is defined as something done with malice aforethought that:

‎May seriously harm or damage Nigeria (or an international body), and

‎Is intended to:

‎Unduly compel a government to act or not act,

‎Seriously intimidate the public, or

‎Destabilize political, economic, or social structures.

‎And the act involves things like attacks on life, destruction of infrastructure, or other severe harm.

‎3. Punishment

‎Under the older Act, threatening or preparing a terrorist act, or facilitating terrorism, can lead to life imprisonment or a very large fine.

‎The 2022 Act has its own set of penalties (depending on the offence), but the principle remains: threats are criminalized when they constitute terrorism.

‎Interpretation & Key Points

‎Threats are explicitly covered: Nigerian law doesn’t only target actual “violent acts” — it also criminalizes threats of terrorism.

‎Intent matters: The threatened act must be “in furtherance of” terrorism. That means it's not just any threat — it should be related to coercion, intimidation, or destabilization with a political or ideological aim.

‎Severity of the threat: For something to legally count as terrorism, the underlying act (or the threatened act) generally has to be serious (e.g., risk of death, big damage, or major public disruption).

‎Reporting obligations: Under the law, if you have material information (i.e., knowledge) about potential terrorism acts, failing to report it to authorities is itself an offence.
