A former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has warned Nigerians against voting for presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, saying doing so would automatically mean supporting a presidential pardon for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Omokri said this in a post on his official X page on Thursday after Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism — a ruling which sparked wide reactions on social media with Nigerians debating the political and legal implications of the sentencing.

“If you vote for Peter Obi as either President or Vice President in 2027, you are automatically voting for a Presidential pardon for Nnamdi Kanu!” Reno stated.

Tribune Online reported earlier that Nnamdi Kanu was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja for terrorism-related offences, including threats, killings, and repeated sit-at-home orders in the South-East.

Justice Omotosho announced the sentencing on Thursday after an hour-long judgment where the IPOB leader was convicted on all the counts of terrorism charges against him by the Department of State Security (DSS), on behalf of the federal government of Nigeria.

Kanu's life imprisonment was a calculated one. The judge who presided over his case was the one who sentenced him to 10 years for illegal entry.

The government are not even interested in appealing the judgement.

Kanu is going nowhere
