Sadly our society has made it like a norm that you must help people around you even if you're still just getting by yourself. In the western world, as soon as you're 18, you're expected to become responsible and solely dependent on your own earnings however meagre but our own society makes everyone dependant even beyond reasonable age due of the lack of jobs and the skill set necessary to get jobs (that are non existent). In the UK and US for example, it's not uncommon you see teens working from as early as 18 years and moving out of their parents' houses by age twenty to start their own lives; Nigeria needs its social security restructured so that dependency can be reduced if not, very soon we will have people in their 40s still living in their parents houses and depending on handouts from friends and family because of the lack of jobs and good social security. In your case, just make the commitment to help as you've done in the past the people whose needs are of more priority in your judgement. ![]() |

Guy don't beat yourself up over this matter and be feeling guilty for failing to help some of these people. If you keep on like this you going to be drained of the small thing wey you dey suffry manage. Those people have the thinking that money grows on tree over there, that it's easily gotten. They're likely to see whatever money you send them as small change and are not really appreciative about it. I'm not telling you to be stingy but just use your discretion while doing some of these your generous acts. And it should be occasional. Always sense the attitude of your beneficiary to check if they're feeling entitled to your money or taking your assistance for granted. And that your lecturer friend wey him cup don full, simply cut him off abeg Nairaland111: |

Nairaland111:Firstly, I don't get why someone will bill you within 2 years of you relocating abroad. Cuz whether scholarship or not, you need time to settle down. Secondly, you have actually tried giving people at random. What you need to know is that abuse is inevitable. What matters are the control you set to ensure that someone is not milking you dry. I like the fact that you chose to prioritize those in school as it can be tough this period. What you need to understand is that Nigeria is currently in a way that even those that seem to be okay before are struggling to make ends meet. As much as you can, assist. But be strategic about it. You should only honour data request when it comes from people close to you. If I may ask, which country did you relocate to and what's the process you used to get the scholarship? |

A friend back then in university days asked me for money. Told him I don't have now. Not that am not giving him money at times, but this time, I don't have. Oga sent me a message that he won't beg me anything again & he won't call either. I just read the message in bewilderment. I didn't respond. It's been 1 yr now. |

ravensckar:Thank you so much for your contribution. I came online out of frustration. If I tell you the amount I’ve spent on giveaways, you won’t believe it. People complain that Nigeria is very hard, yet they’re able to train their children who are now growing into adults, while I’m still trying to put my own life together. I won’t mention the specific country, but you can already guess from the scholarship name. I think you should focus on the DAAD scholarship — it’s straightforward. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask. Also, don’t limit yourself to just that. Apply for other scholarships and join free travel WhatsApp groups to learn. Between 2021 and 2023, I was practically living on Nairaland, reading everything related to japa — from page 1 of the travel section up to page 3000. |

Gbadugbakun:I stopped paying the black tax this year. The West is not easy, working 15 hours a day, including weekends, while your mate in Nigeria is on Instagram flaunting their lifestyle. Your remittance is just encouraging dependency and poverty; it's better to cut them off and focus on your immediate problem. |

BTW, I love the fact that long quote has been reduced such that one can now choose to expand the quoted comment or article instead of scrolling endlessly before one gets to see the actual comment. Very annoying. Such a nice development and goes to show that the nairaland crews are really taking note. Nairaland for life. Example in the image below 👇 emphasis on the circled area

Nairaland111:My brother in the hustle, I'm not blaming you o. Sincerely I'm not. Even those of us wey dey Nigeria ain't free from billing o. So, I can imagine what the people abroad will be facing. Physical billing, I don't mind because it's opportunistic. You jam me one on one for somewhere, I won't even think twice to shake body if you ask me. Because, as far as I'm concerned, it was fate that brought us together on that day. But you see phone billing, na that one I hate pass. To me, it's premeditated extortion or manipulation. Shishi, I no go give. And I'll be unapologetic about it. Incessant Billing was the reason I installed TRUECALLER APP on my phone. So that, I'll know whose call to pick, whose call to ignore and whose call to black list. Me wey no get time for serenren. But you see how the people abroad generalize all of us in Nigeria as "beggars" is what saddens me. You'll now be calling them for something else, they will think it's billing. Na only that one dey para me. But, we thank God sha... As for your offer on JAPA STUFF, perhaps if any of my sibling is contemplating such, because me I don comot JAPA for my plan o. Nigeria don dey sweet me now, I no wan comot again. ![]() |

It is not everyone that asks for money from those abroad all the time. Sometimes, you can't just help it especially if you need the money to sort out something very genuine which you never planned for. Many Nigerians abroad are also not finding it easy. So if you are in Nigeria, work hard and pray to God to favour you in your business or work. If you have to ask for financial help from your friend or sibling abroad, make sure it is for a very genuine, productive and strong reason. Cheers. |
