I tried setting up a UK tiktok account on my phone using a VPN. Tiktok wasn't fooled. It treated my account as Nigerian.

Then I found the answer: Tiktok sends you traffic based on your sim card. If it's a UK sim card, it sends you mostly UK traffic.

I bought a UK sim card and the problem was resolved.

Perhaps, twitter, now X uses a similar system.

I stand by what I wrote.

If I made a mistake, it was that I should have used my laptop to register with Tiktok. Laptops don't use sim cards so may be deceived by a VPN.

The initial registration is what matters the most. So, if you registered with a laptop using a VPN, it would consider you as a UK account.

There may be a downside though. If you now start browsing Tiktok on your Nigerian sim, it may send you lots of Nigerian traffic.

no, twitter didn't expose you. you exposed yourselves by voluntarily uploading your data to a centralized platform. twitter merely reconfigured its data access protocols a predictable event for any entity that doesn't prioritize user privacy over its own commercial interests. you entrusted your data to a third party and that third party exercised its control.

your real location has been functionally public since you first purchased a smartphone consented to location services or posted a photo with geotags enabled. every device you carry, every wifi network you connect to, every cellular tower your signal hits, every public facing social media post these are all transmitting your location data. twitter is just one more conduit in a vast network of personal data exfiltration. the idea that your location was previously private while you were actively engaging with commercial platforms is a delusion.
