The National Universities Commission has expressed concern over the growing misuse of honorary doctorate degrees by Nigerian universities and unaccredited institutions across the country.

The Commission’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja while presenting the findings of an investigation into the “awards and public misuse of honorary doctorate degrees.”

Ribadu said the inquiry, which covered 61 institutions and professional bodies, revealed “deeply concerning” practices, including the indiscriminate conferment of honorary degrees and even the awarding of fake professorships.

The NUC boss warned that recipients of honorary doctorates must not use the title “Dr” as part of their names, stressing that such titles are reserved for holders of PhDs or medical degrees.

So how will it be used? AFTER THE NAME?

So if it can't be used why issuing it, what do they intend to do with it if it can't be used?

When the same title Dr.is given away in a ceremony for a donation or celebrity, it cheapens the immense effort of those who earned it the hard way. The public can no longer distinguish between a scholar and a celebrity, making the title useless as a marker of academic accomplishment.

Illiterates in NUC. If a title cannot be used by the recipient tell me why it should be conferred on him in the first place.
It's just like saying that those conferred with chieftaincy tittles should not use it because they are not traditional rulers.

They can use it but can't add PhD to it, that's the difference

Honorary doctorate degrees supposed to be scrapped off then. Who want Doctorate degree should go to any University and apply like normal MSc.

There has been an abuse of the use of the title Dr of recent.

Theirs should be "Dr.H", before their names, for people with honorary degree, just to distinguish it from the regular medical doctors and doctorate degree holders

Olodo... it used to be enclosed in brackets to indicate that it was honorary. So who is the illiterate now??

PHD has been bastardized in Nigeria. Doctors that can not construct simple sentences.

But they are still referred to as Doctor now.

I know someone that neither got awarded nor earned it. He paid for a fake masters degree transcript from Nigeria and enrolled for a PhD in an online university. After a few months he awarded himself a PhD, and he is addressed as Dr by our gullible people. Made lots of money with scheming and sits with our ministers, governors and kings, and pays for any award that is available and publicised.

I've not seen any celebrity using that title in the US. Even some of the people who earned it as academic degrees would implore you to only address them by their names. What do I know sef, one Nijeriya is different.
