Pastors And Imams Must Pay Tax On Salaries – Oyedele by concernedpikin(op): 6:11am On Nov 25, 2025
Things are definitely changing in Nigeria courtesy Nairametrics

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has clarified that pastors, imams, and other religious workers are liable to pay tax on the salaries they earn from religious institutions.

Speaking on the podcast ‘Mic On’, Oyedele stressed that while churches, mosques, and other religious bodies are exempt from taxation, this exemption does not extend to individuals employed by them.

“So what the law says is that the church and the mosque will not pay tax unless they start doing business as an institution or organization. But anybody they pay, whether it’s the pastor, whether it’s the choir… because these people are just working, it just happens that they are working in God’s vineyard,” he explained.

I hope this taxation thing will not backfire on this government.

You want to copy the west but you don't treat your citizens the way they treat theirs.

The only thing you do is to make promises, I even heard that they can go into your account and deduct taxes.

That's when you will know Nigerians no get joy.

Holds true, makes huge sense and this is the way forward.

These pastors have this annoying arrogance when they go pontificating that they don't spend a dime of church money. Yet, they collect humongous salaries from the same church.

With that salary set to be taxed, they will collect directly from the church purse now.

Religion is a huge business.

This is a regime of a Pharaoh... Keep taxing for your own gain while the masses keep managing.

Most people don’t truly understand the gravity of this situation, which is why there isn't much outrage yet. Only a few seem to grasp it. But the reality hasn’t hit home because implementation hasn't started. Just wait until next year, when the average person sees money vanishing from their account in the name of 'tax', that is when the real noise will begin.

It is baffling to me. I am saving money to save my own life in the event of a kidnapping, essentially doing the job the government failed to do. Yet, this same government, having failed its primary duty to protect me, now wants to dip its hands into the very funds meant to ensure my survival. In summary, they are telling us they don't care if we die.

This is not news na. He said he will tax ashawo, scammers, kidnappers and bandits.

I am waiting for him to announce that a bandit has paid his tax from proceeds of kidnapping.

If you are taxing Pastors and Imans, equally include Native doctors too. The list should encompass all forms of spirituality and scientology.

Fair is fair

They are two mutually inclusive issues.
Dealing with taxation will go on while dealing will corrupts individuals will go on.
One can not be stopped for others.

The hotbed of corruption in Nigerian is among Nigerians themselves especially the civil servants and IPPIS is the headquarters of corruption in Nigeria

Its a good thing to pay tax in as much as you earn, you are liable to pay tax without taxes to government can meed the yarnings of the people, we need good roads, we need modern infrastructure life free WiFi, free medical care, quality education, uninterrupted electricity supply all these demand needs funds to make them available. Many Nigerian like to cut corners they want good things from the government but when they say pay tax, you see them crumbling. No good thing come on a plater of golden. Nigerian be ready to pay your tax and stop complaining.

Religion is a huge business.
Pastors receive a lot of gifts and donations from individuals, especially those who feel their words impact or changed their lives.

The pastors are right about not touching church's money because without them, the church won't exist.

When you go outside the country churchs and mosques pay taxes so why shouldn't they pay here. The bible said give what belongs to ceaser to ceaser. Even God honours the earthly authority.

This moomoo should better use his brain and get his greedy eyes off God's money.

This was the same thing Buhari wanted to do and Adeboye went to warn him in Aso rock ( Mr president remember on your sick bed in London I came to pray for you and God gave a word of when you will be healed) immediately Buhari knew taxing the church was a suicide mission and he buried that evil idea immediately.

All the ones you have been paying what have they done with it? You pay roadworthiness yet the road is not carworrthy. You pay for light and still have to fuel generator or buy expensive solar. What has the government done efficiently as a result of your tax. They steal it for themselves and their children then share indomies every 4years to get re-elected.

Do you know how much tax citizens pay everyday that ends up in private pockets?

Collecting more tax will not help if those stealing it continues at the current pace
