A former Phoenix news anchor has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for taking part in a COVID-19-era loan fraud scheme alongside her husband.

On Friday, a federal judge in Fort Worth, Texas, sentenced Stephanie Hockridge, an ex-KNXV employee, to 120 months in prison. She was also ordered to pay nearly $64 million in restitution and must serve supervised release for two years.

The court asked that Hockridge be held at Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, a minimum security facility that houses Ghislaine Maxwell, Elizabeth Holmes and reality TV star Jen Shah. She is due to surrender by 2 p.m. on Dec. 30.

Earlier this year, a jury found her guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud but acquitted her of four counts of wire fraud.

During the pandemic, Hockridge and her husband, Nathan Reis, started a tech company, BlueAcorn, to help small businesses secure federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans.

However, the feds said the couple created fake payroll records, tax documents, and bank statements to allow some applicants to obtain larger loans.

Prosecutors said the couple showed others how to submit fake PPP loans, and even obtained a loan for a company with no employees.

A congressional report, as reported by Arizona’s Family Investigates, showed that the Scottsdale-based company raked in over a billion dollars in taxpayer money for processing loans.

BlueAcorn’s partner lenders facilitated almost three times as many PPP loans in 2021 as J.P. Morgan, Chase and Bank of America combined. The congressional report alleged that the couple also moved to Puerto Rico after getting most of their PPP loans forgiven.

“In total, Hockridge and her coconspirators processed over $63 million in fraudulent PPP loans,” the DOJ said.

Reis accepted a plea deal and is scheduled to be sentenced in December.

I congratulate her sha as she must now be relieved unlike those that are still going to be taken down but don't yet know when.

Ten years? For $63 million? Bruh, some people steal far more with a PowerPoint presentation and end up as “distinguished public servants.”

Stephanie’s only real mistake was not being a politician — if she pulled this in certain countries, they’d be calling her “Honorable” by now and giving her chieftaincy titles for her “innovation during COVID.”

Funny how the U.S. media loves preaching about corruption abroad, meanwhile one of their own anchors was running a COVID side-hustle bigger than the GDP of small nations.

Moral of the story:
Fraud isn’t a developing-country problem.
It’s a human problem — America just packages theirs with better English and a cleaner studio. grin

Thieves nor dey even better for eyes.
See as she be like who dey suffer.

Meanwhile, I think "blue collar" crimes across all nations are always treated with kids glove. The message seems to be "If you want to steal, you better steal something SO MIND-BLOWING", because how else do you sentence to 10yrs, someone who abused a process that was intended to help people, thereby denying those who actually need it from accessing it.

People who steal "common wealth" should actually be placed on a pole, hanging like a calendar, ofcourse with a bhroken nheck, and dangling legs.

She will be out after about 6 years with good conduct and go back to enjoy her loot with or without her husband. 63 million dollars in restitution Na moimoi cuz they would have invested well in Puerto Rico real estate other businesses.
Some do commit these financial crimes to cash out at the end

grin grin You’re focusing on the restitution like that suddenly makes the whole thing noble.
Restitution isn’t mercy — it’s basically the court saying:

“Yep, you stole it. Now cough it up and still go to jail.”

She’s not getting a softer landing because she’s American. She’s getting jail and the bill. The point still stands: corruption is global — the packaging just changes.

If anything, the fact that a primetime TV face was running a $63m COVID scam only proves my argument even more. cool

Lol...

Another package is coming mid next year - $2000 checks for Americans as a dividend from the trillions the USA is earning from tariffs.

If you are a scammer and you love your life, stay away from it. It won't be like 2020 when people scammed the US government of COVID funds. A word is enough for the wise.

chisomkachy:
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn the alleged money laundering suit it filed at the Federal High Court against Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.

Naija News understands that the anti-graft did not give any particular reason for its application for withdrawal.

Following the application to withdraw, Justice Nicholas Oweibo discharged the ‘lien/Post No Debit’ placed on Obasa’s three accounts in Standard Chartered Bank.

The accounts are (US Dollars) 0001852063; (Current) 0001852056 and (Saving) 5002309624.

The judge also set aside the ex-parte orders he made on September 15, 2020, which led to the freezing of the accounts.

Recall that the court on September 15, 2020, granted an interim order freezing Obasa’s accounts following the EFCC’s application in a suit marked FHC/LCS/1064/2020.

The agency had said it was investigating the Speaker for the alleged offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office and money laundering.

But Justice Oweibo, on August 16, 2023, heard the application to unfreeze the accounts in his chamber.

During the hearing, the EFCC was represented by Mr. Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, while Obasa was represented by Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

The EFCC lawyer told the court that the application to unfreeze the accounts was pursuant to Section 44(2)(K) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Sections 26, 29 and 34 (1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

Section 44 of the Constitution concerns constitutional rights to property.

Justice Oweibo held: “It is hereby ordered that an order is hereby granted to the respondent/applicant setting aside the ex-parte orders of this court made on the 15th day of September 2020 upon the ex-parte motion of the Applicant/ Respondent in relation the funds of the Respondent/Applicant domiciled in the accounts stated in the following schedule:

“ACCOUNT NAME, FINANCIAL ACCOUNT INSTITUTIONS, TYPE OF ACCOUNT, 1. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered, (US Dollars) 0001852063 2. Mudasiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Current) 0001852056 3. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Standard Chartered (Saving) 5002309624.

“Issued at Lagos, under the seal of this Honourable Court and by the hands of the Presiding Judge this 16th day of August 2023.”

Corruption is not the presence of crime, but the absence of justice.
- that is the real corruption that emboldens more corruption.

That is the striking difference between underdeveloped and developed world.

Developed world have their excesses too, but it is no where compare to underdeveloped world.

That is understandable seeing how we lynch those who steal small things on the street but hail & honour those who steal our commonwealth in state capture mode.

TheBedWench:
The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States in the 20th century. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of black blood)[1][2] is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms).

This concept became codified into the law of some states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the long history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste and later segregation. It is an example of hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups.[3]

The one-drop rule is defunct in law in the United States and was never codified into federal law.

You’re not wrong grin — fraud is a universal sport. Humans will always find creative ways to misbehave, no matter the passport color.

But let’s be real: the naira conversion doesn’t magically make the crime “bigger.” Whether it’s ₦90 billion or $63 million, the point is the system actually punished her. She didn’t become a senator. She didn’t get immunity. She didn’t get celebrated on morning TV for “empowering women.”

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, we convert dollars to naira just to shock ourselves — then still turn around and vote the person in next election.

Fraud is everywhere, but consequences are not.
That’s the real difference.
