Revealer3:You forgot CHOICE! All that glitters is not gold and western nations are incredibly overhyped. China’s emergence has completely changed everything and they (western nations) are struggling badly, economically. Everything is affordable except accommodation. Housing cost will drain all your earnings and savings become impossible . Many Nigerians are stuck abroad due to lack of funds/choice. Or unreasonable fear of Nigeria… |

Sirchiboy:I SAY MAKE I ASK AI O. AND THIS WAS WHAT I GOT. BUT OF COURSE AI CAN BE WRONG TOO. BUT IT SHEDS SOME LIGHT FROM SPECULATIONS. First: what does N60m actually buy you in the UK? Using recent exchange rates, £1 ≈ ₦1,890–₦1,910. Exchange Rates UK +1 So: ₦60,000,000 ÷ ~₦1,900 ≈ £31,000–£32,000 Call it £31.5k capital after selling the Lagos house (before visa fees, flights, deposits, etc.). In Lagos he was a homeowner; in the UK he’s arriving as a cash-poor renter with ~£30k and two children, in a country where: Average private rent in England ≈ £1,092/month (higher in London, ~£1,700+). Food for a family of 3 averages about £560/month. Average household spending across everything ≈ £623/week (~£2,700/month, Office for National Statistics) Research on “minimum income standard” suggests a single adult needs ~£30.5k/year, and a couple with two children ~£74k/year, to reach a modest acceptable UK living standard – not luxury. Joseph Rowntree Foundation As a lone parent with two kids and no access to most benefits (typical for migrants on temporary visas), he is starting from a tough position. Now your two scenarios. SCENARIO 1- Scenario 1 – He comes as an international student Immigration & work rules (high level) A Student Visa holder can usually work up to 20 hours/week in term time and full-time in vacations - From UKCISA No access to “public funds” (Universal Credit, most benefits, social housing). Since Jan 2024, only certain postgraduate research or government-sponsored students can bring dependants (partner/children). GOV.UK Children cannot work; if he’s a lone parent, he is basically the only potential earner. Likely income Assume he gets typical low-skill work at around the National Living Wage (~£12.71/hour from April 2026; 2025 is slightly lower but close). The Guardian 20 hours/week × £12.70 ≈ £254/week Annually: ≈ £13,200 before tax Monthly: ≈ £1,100 before tax (maybe ~£1,050 take-home) In vacations he could work full-time and earn more, but term-time restrictions dominate for most of the year. Typical monthly costs (outside London, small one-room/studio) Let’s assume he deliberately picks a cheaper city (Not London, not the Southeast): Rent for a very modest one-bed or studio in a cheaper city: £700–£900 (he may cram into a room in a shared house to be lower). Food for 1 adult + 2 kids (if he’s frugal and cooks): say £400–£550 (below or around national average). Utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet, phone): £150–£200 Local transport, school costs, clothing, toiletries, misc: easily £200–£300 Conservative total: about £1,450–£1,900/month. But his student-job income is only around £1,050/month. So he is short £400–£800 every month, before we even talk about: Tuition fees (£12k–£20k+ per year for many courses) Immigration Health Surcharge, visa fees School uniforms, laptops, emergencies That deficit comes straight out of the £31.5k savings. How long does the N60m last? Very rough: If he runs a £600/month deficit, that’s £7,200/year just to survive, plus tuition maybe £15k/year. Just one year of tuition + living costs could burn £20k–£25k easily. Two years of a taught master’s = likely most or all of the £31.5k gone unless he has extra income (remote work, support from spouse abroad, etc.). Survival verdict – Student route Legally, under UK immigration rules: He can’t work more than 20 hours/week in term and can’t just “hustle full-time” without risking visa breach. Kids cannot work; he probably has no benefits due to “no recourse to public funds”. So: Short-term survival: Possible if he uses the Lagos house money as “fuel” and lives extremely frugally in a small room. But quality of life = very cramped, financially stressful. Long-term survival: Very risky. If he doesn’t transition quickly into a Skilled Worker or Graduate visa with decent salary, he could end up with: No house in Lagos, No significant savings left, Still renting a cramped place, and Pressure to overwork illegally. His chances of thriving on the student route with two kids and only N60m capital are low, unless: He’s on a funded PhD (stipend), or He has strong additional support (spouse overseas sending money, or high-pay remote work in tech, etc.). SCENARIO 2 -Scenario 2 – He comes with work sponsorship (Skilled Worker visa) Immigration & work rules On the Skilled Worker route: His UK employer must sponsor him and pay at least the skilled worker salary threshold – currently £41,700 baseline for new applications, or the higher “going rate” for that job. He can generally work full-time, change jobs within rules, and often work overtime. Most Skilled Worker holders and their dependants also have no recourse to public funds, so still no benefits. Many skilled workers can bring dependants (partner & kids), though some categories now bar bringing dependants (e.g. social care roles). House of Commons Library Likely income Take the minimum Skilled Worker salary: £41,700/year. Approximate tax & NI: After income tax & NI, net is roughly £2,700–£2,900/month (ballpark). (A rough calculation suggests around £2,800/month take-home.) Monthly costs again (outside London) Use the same band as before: Rent: £800–£1,000 for a small flat in a cheaper city. Food: £450–£600 for 3, if they eat mostly at home. Utilities: £150–£200 Transport, school costs, clothes, misc: £250–£350 Total: around £1,650–£2,150/month. With ~£2,800/month take-home, he might have a surplus of ~£600–£1,100/month if he budgeted tight and stayed out of London. That surplus can go to: Building an emergency fund, Paying for childcare/after-school club so he can work full hours, Saving toward a car, or eventually buying a home (though that’s a long road). And remember, he still has the £31.5k capital from Lagos (minus visa, flights and initial setup). That money can: Cover deposits (often 5–6 weeks rent + 1 month up front), Buy basic furniture and laptops for kids, Provide buffer for the first 6–12 months while he settles. Survival verdict – Skilled Worker route Legal work hours: He can work full-time, and perhaps overtime, without breaching immigration rules. Income level: While £41.7k is below the “ideal” £74k for a couple with 2 kids MIS benchmark, Joseph Rowntree Foundation a single breadwinner on that salary can realistically support a small family in a cheaper UK city if they live modestly. Living standard: They’ll still feel “poorer” compared to owning a house in Lagos, but: Bills are pay-able from salary. Savings can grow slowly. Kids access UK schooling and future opportunities. Risk: If he loses the sponsored job, visa security and income are at risk; but structurally, this route is much more sustainable than being income-capped as a student. Overall comparison – “Chances of survival” Economically & legally, with current UK immigration rules: Student route (with two children, N60m capital): Income restricted to part-time, around £13k/year from legal work. High tuition + high cost of living. Burn rate of savings is very fast. Survival = heavily dependent on: External support, OR Very rapid transition to a better visa/job. High risk of downward mobility and hardship despite having sold the Lagos house. Skilled Worker route (work sponsorship): Full-time earning at £41.7k+. No benefits, but salary roughly aligns with lower-middle UK income. With careful location choice (not London), they can: Pay rent and bills from salary, Use the £31.5k as cushion, Slowly rebuild assets. Chances of stable survival and gradual progress are much better. Bottom line If a Nigerian father sells a paid-off house in Lagos (₦60m) and moves to the UK with two children: Coming as a student, under current rules, is financially fragile and often not a rational move unless: He has a funded PhD / scholarship, Or a second strong income source. Coming with a solid Skilled Worker sponsorship paying at or above the new thresholds is far more viable, though it still means: Downgrading from homeowner to renter, Living very modestly at first, Accepting that the UK is a high-cost, high-rules environment with limited safety nets for new migrants. If you want, we can next plug in specific UK cities (e.g. Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow vs London) and model monthly budgets and burn-rate of that ₦60m under each scenario. |

obataokenwa:Why should I tell how much is in my account...as who? That all the people with families you know who lives abroad are struggling, does not mean it is same for everyone. One who is a Senior Clinical Practitioner (Grade 12) working full-time (36hrs/week) as a permanent staff of a borough in Central London, is not suffering. That monthly minimum wage your relatives in Nigeria earn, is what I earn under an hour for online psychotherapy sessions, which is my online side hustle....if e easy to be a UKCP and BACP accredited Psychotherapist, go run am and see if you will still be financially broke. |

I enjoy reading the comments on this British anti immigrant forum, I wouldn't even give it 5 years before something close to civil war breaks out because the oyinbos are mad as in raving mad about mass immigration. I pity you Africans selling your properties to go to the UK, if the reform party doesn't win the next election all hell is breaking out in that country. |

ibedun:5K job in america is very easy to get. canada of 10 years ago could easily offer him 5k, but canada of today is no somehow. forget uk or europe, 5k job in those countries na war. another country that can easily offer him 5k is australia. The only way to break even in uk is thru loan, they offer generous loan with a reasonable time to pay. That was how I built my second house in naija and I paid back the loan within 4 yrs. canada make sense only if u have a stable job and u are PR- however, stable job is no longer guaranteed in present unstable canada economy. Trudeau almost wrecked that once prosperous country b4 he left. but selling a 60million naira house to gamble it in uk no make sense at all. That's 30 thousand pounds, even british will look at him like 'is he cray?' |
