Southern Governors, Traditional Rulers Meet in Iperu, Adopt Key Resolutions on Security and Regional Cooperation

Southern governors and traditional rulers from across the South-West, South-East, and South-South converged in Iperu, Ogun State, on Wednesday for a joint meeting hosted by Governor @DapoAbiodunCON. The high-level gathering focused on strengthening regional security, deepening cooperation, and advancing shared development priorities.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Governor Abiodun said the forum reaffirmed its collective commitment to the unity, stability, and peace of Nigeria, while also addressing urgent challenges affecting the southern region. He noted that the governors and traditional rulers reviewed the security situation nationwide and extended their condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent loss of military personnel in Borno, as well as the mass abductions recorded in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States.

The participants commended President Tinubu for ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, rehabilitate security institutions, and deliver landmark infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway.

At the end of deliberations, the forum adopted several resolutions, including the creation of a zonal security fund, the establishment of an enhanced intelligence-sharing framework, renewed advocacy for State Police, a unified resident identification programme, and stronger support for local and regional security outfits. Member states were also urged to work with traditional rulers to regulate land allocation and curb illegal mining activities posing security and environmental risks.

The governors and traditional rulers jointly passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, reaffirming the long-standing position of the southern region as captured in the 2021 Asaba Accord, which advocated for a President of Southern extraction.

Governor Abiodun stressed that Southern Nigeria remains united and committed to peaceful coexistence across religious and cultural lines. He added that the region would continue to work collaboratively with the Federal Government to promote peace, prosperity, and inclusive progress for all Nigerians.

Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun, CON @DapoAbiodunCON

We hosted the Joint Meeting of the Southern Governors’ Forum and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council today in Iperu, where we met with our brother-Governors and esteemed traditional rulers to address key issues affecting Southern Nigeria. Our discussions focused on security, governance, economic stability, and strengthening regional collaboration.

We reaffirmed our commitment to a united and secure Nigeria and extended condolences to Mr. President over the recent losses in Borno, Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States. We also expressed appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in stabilizing the economy, reducing inflation, supporting security agencies, and driving landmark infrastructure projects.

Together, we adopted major resolutions, including the creation of a zonal security fund, improved intelligence-sharing systems, sustained advocacy for State Police, a unified resident identification programme, stronger regional security outfits, better land and mining governance, and enhanced support for traditional councils.

We joined the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council in passing a vote of confidence in Mr. President and restated our support for a Southern President in line with the Asaba Accord. We reassured all citizens that Southern Nigeria remains united, peaceful, and committed to working collaboratively for the progress and prosperity of our region and the entire country.

SOUTHERN GOVERNORS, TRADITIONAL RULERS MEET IN OGUN, ISSUE STRONG RESOLUTIONS ON SECURITY & GOVERNANCE

The Southern Governors’ Forum and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council met on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, at the Governor’s Residence in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, where they deliberated on critical issues of security, governance, economic stability, and regional cooperation.

The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to a united Nigeria and strengthened collaboration among Southern states. It commiserated with the President over the tragic loss of military personnel in Borno and recent abductions in Kebbi, Kwara, and Niger States, while praising the successful rescue operations that followed.

Members commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for stabilizing the economy; highlighting steady FX recovery, declining inflation, and reduced food prices; as well as for accelerating landmark infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway. The Forum also welcomed the Renewed Hope Ward Initiative and the rehabilitation of Police and NSCDC training colleges.

The joint session with Southern traditional rulers emphasized the indispensable role of traditional institutions in intelligence gathering, peacebuilding, and community security. The Forum encouraged all states to formally include traditional rulers in security councils.

Security chiefs from the Army, Police, DSS, and NSCDC provided comprehensive regional briefings, leading to the following key resolutions:

1. Zonal Security Fund:
Each geopolitical zone will establish a dedicated fund for joint security operations, with monthly coordination meetings of Security Advisers.

2. Modern Intelligence Infrastructure:
States will jointly invest in communication and surveillance technologies to enable real-time security coordination across the South.

3. State Police:
The Forum renewed its strong advocacy for constitutional approval of State Police.

4. Unified Resident Identification System:
Member states will partner with NIMC to implement a harmonized resident ID system.

5. Strengthened Local Security Outfits:
Regional and community security structures, including hunter groups and surveillance units, will receive increased logistics and equipment support.

6. Regulation of Land & Mining Activities:
States will work with traditional rulers to control land allocation and curb illegal mining.

7. Support for Traditional Councils:
Traditional councils will receive enhanced funding and operational support to deepen their role in governance and security.

In a show of unity, the Forum and the SNTRC passed a Vote of Confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming support for a Southern President as first declared in the 2021 Asaba Accord.

The Forum condemned attempts to sow division and assured citizens that Southern Nigeria remains united, peaceful, and committed to regional progress. It pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government to advance peace, prosperity, and development across the South

This southern governors shit always gets activated to serve the interest of the South west. The South west fears that the bandits they supported are infiltrating their region and suddenly they remembered South governors scam thing, just the same way they used it to their advantage in the last general election. Where were they when a democratically elected governor of Rivers state was illegally removed?

Why are they not serious about state police? What's the meaning of renewed advocacy for state police? Who are they advocating to? The president?

The resolution will just be on paper unless we see actions.

Now that the President has urged the NASS to expedite actions on state police, the governors should waste no time in pushing for this, once and for all.

Nothing special, here is The summary:

Several southern governors speak about improvements in security across their region.

They thank the national leadership for efforts that- according to them-have helped make the region safer.

The video highlights strategies or developments regarded as contributing factors to the improved security situation.

What’s wrong with that if that’s the dress-code for the meeting? Their gallant soldiers have the right uniform and weapons. Improved security is the subject of this matter.

Southern Nigeria remains united and committed to peaceful coexistence across religious and cultural lines.

A Southern unity without the people from south East is a welcome development . Any region that supports a terrorist like NNAMDI KANU, should have nothing to do with the south west and south South.

Southern Governors Forum

naptu2:
Memories

There are many reasons why I remember the Southern Governors Forum meetings of the early 2000s. Of course there's the fact that it was always in the news and I always know what's in the news. There's also the fact that it was one of the tools that was used to fight the onshore-offshore dichotomy battles (some people might have forgotten about that), but there's a very random reason why I remember the meetings. It's about a motorcade.

(Interestingly I'm still trying to find the time to complete my post about some motorcades that I saw in the early 1980s).

I was on Third Mainland Bridge and heading towards the Island when I saw a strange thing. It was a lone police motorcycle that had its siren on. This was quite strange. The only time that you'd see police motorcycles with their sirens blaring (at that time) was when they were leading a motorcade, yet here was a solitary police motorcycle with its sirens blaring. Most vehicles around simply ignored the motorcycle.

It was some time before even more police motorcycles went past. I was near the Adeniji Adele exit by this time. This made more sense. There were around 3 motorcycles and a pilot car was close behind them. Then I soon realised why everything initially seemed strange. There were around 4 governors (each in his official car), including the Lagos State governor, in that motorcade and it was longer than usual. All the vehicles on Ring Road had to park to allow them go past.

This occurred during one of the Southern Governors Forum meetings. It was only after I saw the plate numbers of the governors' cars that I remembered that I had read about the meeting in the newspapers.

I wish I could remember the year that this happened.

This is not Southern governors forum, rather, Fubara meeting other governors from the South West and Yoruba Obas for a birthday meeting of one of their own.

I didn't see my king there, HEM, King Ezegbakagbaka II, Nyeweli Ikwerre, therefore that meeting is not recognised and whatever that was said there is null and void until they call a meeting of the South South governors and kings first to take a stand before rushing to the West to support a Yoruba president.

The symbolism is apparently lost on you. It means unanimity of purpose. It's not only done for parties.
