Among many Nigerians today, there is a growing chorus nostalgically calling back to the era of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, painting it as a golden age—the proverbial El Dorado. But this romanticising of the past is deeply reactionary and dangerous. It ignores harsh realities and risks trapping the nation in a cycle of uncritical loyalty that harms progress. Jonathan’s presidency, like many before and after, was marked by serious challenges. Yes, some enjoyed stability or developmental strides, but this era also saw systemic corruption, inefficiency, and the heavy-handedness of organized violence. Those who cling to this period as some form of paradise gloss over these truths, becoming little more than floatsam and jetsam—drifting aimlessly without addressing the underlying decay in governance and civic rights. Organised violence—whether state-sponsored or through proxies—has often been wielded as a tool against the Nigerian people. It appears in various forms: suppression of dissent, electoral manipulation, police brutality, or intimidation of communities. The Jonathan administration had its share of such incidents, and remembering it as purely a golden era dismisses the suffering of those marginalized by these abuses. As Nigerians, it’s crucial to resist the allure of nostalgia that blinds us to real systemic issues. Rather than harking back to any one leader or time as an untouchable high point, the focus must be on holding current and future leaders accountable and demanding meaningful reforms. These reforms should promote transparent governance, respect for human rights, and a genuine security framework that serves the people instead of oppressing them. “Wake up Nigeria” isn’t just a call to reject past illusions; it’s an urgent invitation to action. It is a push to engage critically with our political landscape, to be wary of simplistic comparisons and sentimental longing for past leadership, and to demand better from those in power. Our nation’s future depends on learning from history without being shackled to it. It calls for vigilance, unity, and courage to challenge those who use power and violence against us. Only through this can Nigeria move closer to the democracy and prosperity that all Nigerians deserve. Nostalgia is a natural human emotion. |

I see nothing different that GEJ wants to do again. Obasanjo was a Head of State under Military rule, he came back as a civilian president...what significant transformation did he make apart from securing the future for his children, grand children and his unborn children? Till now, Nigeria can't be proud of constant electricity supply for at least 18 hours per day...all over the nation. Bad road, corrupt civil servants in every state, harsh government policies that kill start-up businesses, substandard education and shameful economy are still what we are battling with in the country. The same thing happened in Buhari PMB' administration...so what exactly does GEJ want to do again? Are there no more well meaning Nigerians that can blaze the trail? I want to believe that majority of those pushing the idea of GEJ come back are just the selfish politicians who benefitted grossly from the corrupt/clueless leadership of GEJ and feel no other president can be so loose for them steal from the nation's treasury. No more, no less ![]() |

We need to stop glorifying mediocrity. We should be able to demand more from our leaders without referring to previous leaders as the best. The best should be the reference point |

It’s only natural. If Shettima takes over now and starts running a Boko Haram government, everybody will be missing Tinubu. Hope that explains why Nigerians are missing Jonathan. |

This is how I view President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration, by comparing him with Mikel Arteta of Arsenal football club: 1. Vision and Strategy Tinubu: His administration has introduced major economic and institutional reforms—such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange-rate unification, with the intention of rebuilding the foundations of Nigeria’s economy for long-term stability. Arteta: When Arteta took over Arsenal, he brought a clear tactical philosophy and long-term plan focused on structure, discipline, and a new style of play. 2. Tough Early Decisions Tinubu: His reforms have involved difficult, sometimes unpopular decisions that cause short-term discomfort but are aimed at future economic resilience. Arteta: He made bold choices early on, reshaping the squad, letting go of big names, and enforcing strict culture standards, which initially brought mixed results but laid the groundwork for future success. 3. Rebuilding Culture and Institutions Tinubu: Part of his agenda includes strengthening institutions, improving governance processes, and reducing systemic inefficiencies. Arteta: He rebuilt Arsenal’s dressing-room culture, instilling accountability, teamwork, and a winning mentality. 4. Youth, Innovation, and Long-Term Development Tinubu: He emphasizes reforms that could open opportunities for entrepreneurship, investment, and long-term economic diversification. Arteta: He invested in young players and modern football principles, creating a dynamic team built for sustained competitiveness. 5. Gradual but Visible Transition Tinubu: The impact of nationwide reforms takes time and comes with challenges, but they are intended to move Nigeria toward a more stable and prosperous future. Arteta: Arsenal’s rise was gradual, early struggles eventually gave way to stronger performances and a clearer identity. In essence: Both scenarios reflect transformational leadership that requires patience, difficult short-term sacrifices, and a long-term vision aimed at creating a more resilient and competitive system, whether it’s a nation’s economy or a football club’s performance. |

No one is romanticizing GEJ's era. We are simply asking for a return to the basics. |

ebukal67x:...and you think there had been any administration so far in Nigeria that we can call "basics"? What exactly do you mean by "basics"? Oil subsidy (cheaper PMS)? Bad road? Erratic power supply? Worthless Naira? Insecurity? Corruption in the Civil Service? Nepotism? Outdated Education Curriculum? Mass Unemployment? Which of the above is your "basics"? No administration (either military or democratic) in Nigeria has been able to thoroughly deliver the promises usually made during campaign when it comes to the basic area highlighted above. So, tell me, which basics are we going back to? |

Please, leave Jonathan alone and let him be. Than God he just arrived from Guinea Bisau. To be sincere, I achieved a lot under his administration when compared with the other two tenure after him. I am not a politician or civil servant. I am a business man and I saw my businesses thriving during his tenure in government. I really wished Buhari didn't win that election because I knew the change many people were clamouring was just for their pocket. I saw it coming. ![]() |

I think Jonathan’s time was indeed better than the current administration. Anyone denying that is either being disingenuous or doesn’t understand Nigeria. |

I still believe that there are several other change makers in Nigeria that can take us to the promised land. We only need to explore the Human resources that we have and back them us without any tribal, religious, or political sentiments. During Obasanjo's regime, he discovered Okonjo Iweala, Femi Adesina, Charles Solidi, Dora Akunyili, Professor Bat Nnanji, Professor Ekwensili and several others that we never expected to give in the best of them...there are still people like these in Nigeria who can deliver. Let's look for them and support them instead of following the old bandwagon. |
