Senator Ali Ndume has criticised the continued deployment of police officers to lawmakers and other VIPs despite President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive ordering the withdrawal of police personnel from such duties.

President Tinubu had, during a security meeting with service chiefs, directed that police officers be removed from VIP protection assignments as part of efforts to tackle rising bandit attacks.


Under the new arrangement, VIPs requiring security are to be assigned operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead.

However, appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume said the directive had not been implemented, noting that police presence around VIPs, especially within the National Assembly, remained unchanged.

“This is one of the commendable things Mr President did and it should be implemented effectively. We should see it on the ground,” he said.

“I thought today I would not see so many police in the National Assembly, but there are still crowded police in the complex. So, I don’t know what the IGP is talking about.”

The senator insisted that police officers should be withdrawn from senators, representatives and ministers, arguing that securing the Federal Capital Territory should eliminate the need for personalised police protection.

“If you secure Abuja, why do you need policemen to be attached to personalities?” he asked.

Ndume further expressed concern about what he described as excessive and misplaced deployment of officers, claiming that some ministers have police escorts attached to their wives and children.

“One of the politically exposed persons — I don’t want to mention names — his son moves with a convoy, that is wrong.”

The lawmaker said he recently visited a colleague’s residence and found ten police officers assigned there, calling the arrangement wasteful and unfair to ordinary Nigerians.

He also criticised the size of the presidential convoy, arguing that securing the capital city would make such heavy escorts unnecessary.

“Even the President, the convoy with which he goes about is too much. Secure Abuja and the President can even drive out.

“When you secure personalities, common people become vulnerable and we don’t care. When you secure Abuja, then you can drive at night.” he said.

Many policemen who follow VIPs up and down won't like this new directive. Protecting important people means they will always receive tips. If you want to deploy them to streets, it means they'll have to start extorting people to make up what the VIPs used to pay them

Without very serious enforcement, the directive is bound to fail again.

Quite a good remark from the senator, secure Abuja and there will be no need for security details

Good directive don't always work out in Nigeria if the rules were against the poor mass rather than the elite the police would have executed it fast and swift

Implementation of laws/orders has always being one core problem

The Nigerian Police is a lawless institution. This archaic body needs to be disbanded and rebuilt from scratch with new recruits and modern crime preventive equipment.

They do not obey direct orders even from their line officers, talk more of someone far away from them issuing such orders. This is the result of decades of the rot in the system. Corruption has eroded the command structure and everyone act as he or she likes.

Just yesterday I saw two finely kitted Mobile Policemen guarding a suspected Yahoo boy and his white girlfriend at a shopping mall. Very shameful.

We all know it's not possible to enforce, it's all talk,no action policy

So IG no send Oga at the top. Okay o. But mr senator how many police dey your own entourage?

Tinubu gives a directive, and those who are expected to carry it out flout it with a bold face. Tinubu sees that his directive has been flaunted yet moves on as if nothing has happened.

It is obvious that Tinubu is not in charge of his government. In fact, Tinubu’s regime is the most lawless in the history of this country.

Talk on national television, doing in the secret. Law in this country is for poor people.

Call out the name of the person, the masses will help you drag him or her online

Ndume will soon cry out that he is being targeted and they have removed all his security details without anyone left. No be politicians? Trust them at your own perils. He will still have onr or two attached to him. But he raises many valid points though and it's better to keep pressing president's neck to implement those things because he may not know what is happening around after giving order. He only reads report.

I only blame those that believed the president when he made that statement. The statement has been made several times before by past president and IGPs without implementation, it is just a political statement to deceive people that they are working

Since Tinubu became president, have any of his directives been carried out? Even in cases where they appear to be carried out, they are done haphazardly.
