Make investigation Over Disputed Abuja Land public - Wike urges Defence Ministry by bolaayenimo(op): 7:53am On Nov 28, 2025
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on the Ministry of Defence to provide Nigerians with an update on its investigation into the controversial parcel of land allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd.).

The land dispute reached a boiling point earlier this month when soldiers obstructed Wike and senior officials of the FCT Administration from gaining access to the property, a development that sparked public concern and heightened tension within the capital.

Wike had insisted that the development on the land was illegal, maintaining that the military neither obtained approval nor submitted valid documentation to the FCTA before commencing construction. According to him, available records at the FCT Administration did not support the ownership claims made by the former naval chief.

The FCT Minister further stated that in his assessment of the situation, Vice Admiral Gambo may have been a victim of fraudulent land dealings. “From all indications, it appears the former Chief of Naval Staff was scammed,” Wike reportedly told FCTA officials during the confrontation. He added that the relevant authorities must verify the authenticity of the documents in Gambo’s possession before any construction can proceed.

However, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, faulted Wike’s approach, accusing him of ignoring earlier counsel from both the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff. According to Matawalle, both service chiefs had urged the FCT Minister to await the outcome of a formal inquiry rather than engaging the officer directly at the site.

Speaking to Daily Independent on Thursday, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, insisted that only the Defence Ministry can provide Nigerians with the latest information on the probe, since it publicly announced the investigation.

“You said the Minister of Defence said they will investigate the circumstances surrounding the land. I think you should direct the question to them,” Olayinka said.

“If they said they are investigating, how far have they gone? If not, why is the investigation taking so long?”

He stated that Nigerians deserve to know whether the former naval chief has submitted proof of legitimate ownership.

“Has the former Chief of Naval Staff provided evidence that he genuinely owns the land? Has he provided proof that he actually submitted the right documents to the authorities?” he queried.

On whether Wike’s directive halting further development on the disputed property is being adhered to, Olayinka explained that he had not visited the site since the confrontation but promised to verify.

“I will find out. It is not a question I can answer as I am talking to you because I have not gone there since that incident. I will find out and get back to you,” he said.

As the controversy lingers, Abuja residents and stakeholders await clarification from the Defence Ministry, whose inquiry is expected to determine the authenticity of the land’s ownership and resolve the standoff between civil authorities and military interests.

Oga Wike, leave that land issue alone. You have already positioned yourself against the military, and President Tinubu is unlikely to take sides with you against them. In the end, you may be the one sacrificed. Those complaining about military involvement in civilian matters should remember that our democracy has always had blurred lines the same military is often used during elections. So don’t act surprised when the situation no longer favors you. My advice is simple: Wike, step away from that land and focus your attention elsewhere.

I don't understand why this guy is stubborn, is it every land you must grab. This guy won't be in power forever and I pity what will happen to him next. Grabbing power with Military that maybe it's his behaviour that can even snowball to a Military takeover. Better BAT demotes this guy to another Minister.

Why are you seeking update?
They said you shouldn't go there, you went with CNN & NTA... you got served.

Don't ask for any update, go there again or better still ask the President.

This Ikwere man should rest on land matters na. The ghost of Yerima clearly still hunts Wike. His stocks really took a big hit. He was even encouraging mutiny in the armed forces by saying in a press conference post-incidence that Lt. Yerima should have disobeyed a "wrong order". Wike has no advisers. He should take this as an L and move on already. Nigerians have moved on.

no wonder Wike has been fighting this man.

Do you think it a coincidence that after the attack, there was a massive hit on the man's(minister of defence) education and background.

I believe Wike and his minions are trying to fight the man behind closed doors but they have been hitting plain walls.

Wike thinks everyone will bow down to his tyranny in Abuja.

If i dig into his(Wike) personal life, i believe i can obtain information that will keep his mouth shut until this tenure.

If u must know, these Abuja politicians are not as smart as you think they are. Wike is not an exception.

Anyways, i just said my mind. It was an alleged situation, so Dss should not take it as a do or die affair

Their investigation will come to nothing. Everything they need is domiciled with the FCTA. The defence ministry has left its primary duty, while the nation is being consumed with insecurity and they are busy dabbling into the FCT Minister's job. The best Minister in this administration. Incompetent lot. You can't do your job, but you won't let others do theirs. Pull down syndrome.

Mr President, please make Wike the Defense Minister.

He's tough and bold.

Matawalle whose state was overrun by bandits can't do more than he did while he was the governor of Zamfara state.

Wike should please step in and flush out the terrorists.

So, we should encourage lawlessness bcoz it involves a uniform person?

I sometimes imagine the kind of brain some of our youth display online. You cannot because you hate someone or an administration be supporting illegality. So because the land belonged to a former military officer, whether it was acquired illegally or not, Wike should pipe low and leave them. Isn't this same youths clamouring for a better Nigeria? How do you expect the country to get better when the military see themselves as above the law?

Tareq1105:

What do we understand by lawlessness? In this situation, it appears Wike is the one exhibiting it. There are established procedures for reclaiming any land in Abuja, and Wike should follow those processes or seek legal redress in court. You cannot simply intimidate people off their property because you believe you are above the law. Individuals have presented court documents asking him to stop, yet he ignores them. If Wike believes the General does not have valid ownership papers, then he should challenge it in court. Otherwise, he should stay away from the property.
