Medical Students: How Did You Get A High Jamb Score. by Jackanda1(op): 11:46am On Nov 28, 2025
I mentioned medical student because I know that medicine requires a high jamb score. I am seeking for admission into medicine. it has been my dream for some time now, but jamb had been making it very difficult. It has been more than 6 years. I had to settle for a course I do not like. I'm a graduate now and done with Nysc. However my dreams remain. I attended three times and give up. I want to try it again with the determination to get it this time. I am seeking advice from people who have pass this stage successfully.

So I am making another attempt at jamb next year. I have started studying with jamb syllables and past questions but my problems are:

1. The textbooks are just too bulky. There are too many things to study if you are following the syllabus. It is very frustrating. Too many things to study in a very short period of time.

2. Tendency to forget easily. Things I studied last month I have forgotten more than 50% of it, because of it bulkiness. So I have to go back to revise them which is time consuming especially when I have new topics to study.

3. I'm currently studying organic compounds in chemistry. And it is it is painful that I couldn't answer all the past questions on that topic. I had to go back to revise the topic. It seems jamb questions are hidden in corners of the textbooks. And you can't find them no matter how hard you cram.

4. I do not know if my brain is a little bit slow because I can spend time on one particular topic and in 3 days time I end up forgetting 70% of what I read in that topic.so Did you people go through this problems cuz I'm tired.

5. Medicine for me is a do or die. I don't intend to give up. I always see myself as a medical doctor. But jamb is jamming me too much.

I need help and encouragement from you guys. How did you do it.

Should I just focus on past questions. Tell me how you did it. if possible break it down summarize it. Even if it's a hard Way. Tell me, I need your help.

Hope u are not going through all this, because you want to be close to a lady? You said you’re already done with Nysc? Why not focus on the next chapter of life, get a good job, work sometime save up and further ur m.sc if u love knowledge that much. Going back in present day Nigeria isn’t worth it, especially with more people embracing herbal concoction as alternative to expensive health care. If by some miracle this method proves workable for Nigerians then that profession would lose all its relevance. Before you talk of government certifying herbs unsafe just know that the avg Nigerian don’t give a Bleep about the government.

Get solved past questions on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Use of English.

Repeat them as if you have not gone thru them before. Then rinse and repeat.

Exactly what I told my son. There are no new questions just the old ones rephrased.

He did and he scored 293 and he is studying Medcines and Surgery by God's grace.

huh

Studying medicine is not for those who cram to pass, it is a must you know everything about science, not just to read and pass..

I was once rooting for medicine during my undergraduate days, nobody told me to settle for another course, microbiology...

Medicine is a course you must know the in and out of all that is required to excel, not just because you see people studying it and you want to jump at it...

Re: Medical Students: How Did You Get A High Jamb Score. by Verance:
The bar to study MBBS in Nigeria is inordinately high because the average Nigerian parent want their children to become a medical doctor, therefore the demand to study MBBS is disproportionately higher compared to other science courses.

For example the year I gained admission to study Chemistry Education (by choice), according to JAMB statistics, only 8 people chose that course for that school that year, on the other hand, 13,000 candidates chose MBBS for that school that year, mind you, the school can only admit 100 each year for MBBS and out of this 100, about a third will come in through connection. So you have 13,000 JAMBITES in a rat race for 70 merit slots. This means that if you picked a random 180 JAMBITES that choose MBBS for that school for that year, only one person would be admitted. Guess who that one person would be? an academic freak and in many cases someone already in the University studying a different course while applying each year for medicine. Hence, you need to score 330+ to be fully confident that you will be that 1/180 persons.

A student that scores 280 is good, 300 is great, 320 is excellent but might not be good enough to get MBBS on merit in a public university in Nigeria. Imagine how hard it is for a JAMBITES of this generation, highly distracted by social media to score 330+. Though compared to my days, UTME questions are softer but the students I encounter in the classroom today have little interest in studying their books spontaneously, which explains the statistics of why it more difficult to score 200 today than when UTME was paper based.

Length and breath of what I have said is: The fact that one doesn't get admitted to study MBBS despite giving the ULTIMATE preparation in terms of study doesn't make the person a bad student. Only those who are exceptionally (freakingly) good academically can score high enough to get MBBS on merit in a public university. The bar is a relative lower in private universities but I bet you know the figures involved.

You may consider other equally good courses to study. I studied Education and currently work as teacher and I can boldly say that my salary plus private lessons in a month beats what the average medical doctor earns in a month in my locality here in Lagos, even if I don't have properties or a large bank account (just like many doctors who started practicing from the time I graduated from school), I can feed myself and family well enough, dress fine and afford a modest accomodation.

I've spoken here based on my decade old experience as a science teacher teaching UTME prep classes.

This must be a fake or made up story. There is no way someone will lose youth with a four to five year course and still hold medicine in mind.

Go and make money in the real world instead of chasing marks on a paper. There is no greater joy.

I didn't finish reading before I made my conclusion that Medicine is DEFINITELY not for you.
Why you may ask
If Jamb syllabus not 'syllables' is too bulky I wonder how you will cope with medicine.

Go for another thing please.

If the degree you have now is science related, then you're a poor student academically, UTME has been watered down over the years, a graduate in any science degree should ne able to score over 300 by just refreshing his brains with the textbooks and any of these apps that treat past questions, i have done this and it took me only two weeks of looking at these elementary concepts.

Of JAMB books are too bulky for you then I doubt you can handle the rigour of studying medicine. However as an optimist, I advise you change the way you study. If you are a more visual person then try YouTube videos in the topics giving you issues.

Godspeed

Try this study method SPQ3R

(Summarized via Google AI)

The five steps of SQ3R:
Survey: Skim the text to get a general overview. Look at titles, headings, subheadings, bold text, images, and the introduction/conclusion to understand the main topics.
Question: Turn headings into questions to create a purpose for your reading. For example, a heading like "The Gas Laws" could become "What are the gas laws?".
Read: Read the text section by section, actively searching for the answers to the questions you created in the previous step. Highlight or take notes on the information that answers your questions.
Recite: After reading a section, try to answer your questions in your own words without looking back at the text. This step helps move information from short-term to long-term memory.
Review: After you finish the entire chapter, review all your questions and answers. This reinforces what you've learned and helps you see how the different parts fit together to form a complete understanding.
2.Past questions are good.
Re: Medical Students: How Did You Get A High Jamb Score. by haybhi1(m): 12:56pm On Nov 28, 2025
It's not that difficult as I can see your determination.

Get those solved JAMB PQs. Get Lamlard textbooks. Treat a JAMB past question, check its answer. If you solve it wrongly, check its workings in the PQ first. Then go to the topic in Lamlard, read the topic. That way you'll get understanding and you'll hardly ever forget.

The beauty is you'll appreciate science, indeed.

Take this advice from one who scored 300+ in JAMB and 80+% in Post JAMB and is studying the Medicine.

Wish you success.

I believe in UI, if you get a first class in anatomy or physiology, you CAN get into 400 level in their medical school.

Also, I knew a doctor who came up via that route. He didn't have to do NYSC once house job was finished, the lucky guy cheesy
