trytillmake: At op what do u wanna achieve with learning java, what project do u want to conquer with itHey trytillmake, I want to beat unemployment, l want to build enterprise level web applications for now and maybe cross platform in future I like the stability that come with it compared to web. I am a c# guy actually leant jjava se in 1 night,, when I had a job to build an app for a client then ,10 pm to 6am, I remember then.I read the they are similar in concept, C# is MS version of Java , the difference is syntax, however, picking it up in a night is wild ngl. unfortunately, I cannot speed learn this way, because I need to master it comfortably and the textbook I am using is stretching my learning tolerance in a good way. Good luck to u, Java still very the Baba.I will check the video out and see if the creator method is interesting or align with my learning pattern. you can ignore my question if you do not want doxx yourself, are you building in the banking/finance sector? |

SourYoghurt:Welcome bro ! glad to see your enthusiasm toward Java. |

SourYoghurt:Built a couple for those sectors on c#. Kudos on yr learning journey, try check this materials I posted, I guarantee it will really help u also I believe u can move faster with videos, with videos u can see, learn, test and get results from yr code immediately, u can cover the basics fast also with advanced. U can now go more with books if the videos don't cover it. |

trytillmake:learning with videos is a imbibing yourself with disaster. what you should be doing is reading docs and rfc then implementing what you read in any project. you want to be a aws engineer, try self hosting or create a torrent website from scratch. |

Kaczynski:So all them Udemy, coursera, edX, Skillshare even YouTube and other video learning sites dem no get sense abi, people no dey use them abi. The one u know use it don't castigate others, |

trytillmake:using videos to learn is not bad but on the low end of spevtrum i doubt anyone writing software for hydarulic simulation or anybody implementing a hash table will use video to learn |

I am struggling to maintain speed like I planned, my allergies has been a constant hindrance, I was okay until I went out to pick Aliexpress package and they are currently fixing the road leading to the pick up centre so there so much dust that my hairline was looking like that meme that trended a few years ago in East Africa I have attached the image, The past 3 days was hell, I was sneezing and my eyes were reddd, itchy, watery and visible tiny veins popping out, my friend who is a baby dockay asked me to take Piriton. I think I am better but I am just round off chapter 10, no ![]() I do not know if it was my health, I struggle a lot with this polymorphism, I know what it means and what it does but I do not know but some surface rules are slipping through my fingers, hopefully the self exercises part reinforces it. I met some indian dude on a discord sever and they said I have wasted too much time learning that I should have moved on to SpringBoot already, guess what, he is a learner like me but I just told him okay, he sent an AI generated TOC and that thing be combining 2 chapters in 1 week, lol. He might be right, two truth can coexist, but me I am not that smart like that and it is disastrous to use American people's effort to judge myself when my location and Identity has set me back 4 points behind. with minimal effort, if Rahul an HR or CTO is trying to hire and is stuck between me a minimal effort candidate and his brother Dhruv a minimal effort candidate too, he will gladly pick Dhruv because they have relatable connection( yes, I will do the same and you might too). I am saying all these because I find his opinion to be dangerous because if i follow his advice, I can rush things and jump into spring and struggle and start feeling, "maybe it was the bit that i skipped" so I will take my time, if i will do this until August 2026, that is fine. my goal is to become good and know why x behaves the way it does not a developer that can make it work but not how it works. Advent of Code is starting in less than 20hrs, I will jump on it and see if i can solve a few with Java. I will share my solution in a separate thread. sir Seun, I hope that will not get me banned? Time to start solving exercises.

Kaczynski:This is my first shot sha, I want to see if it is something i can handle, I read the FAQ, the creator stated using AI is a "NO" so that is a good thing and I think it is a 12 days challenge. |

Kaczynski:ah ha, I have checked it out, I think I will have to use JS to solve the problems due to lack of knowledge of fs in Java yet. I do not know DSA yet but I will give it a bite. There are DSA part in the textbook I am using and 'quick gratification' was making me think of skipping it. lol. |

Last week has been slow still stuck in chapter 10, my learning hour - I wrote a script that tracks my screen time in my LM PC has been less than 5 hrs for the PDF reader and the IntelliJ. I am not going to beat myself up. there were days I was progressively fast and grasping thing and most importantly, I am literally learning a new language fgs. I am happy for my "former" friend she texted me she got a job on Upwork although she bought connect to land them. I did not ask further for details so that it does not seem like I am establishing a severed connection. On the positive side, I am in day 4 of AOC using JavaScript. I dun abandoned Java, I will hopefully use Java in 2026. I struggled on day 2 for almost 2 days. It has made me realise that I have skills issues and my DSA is shiiiiiiittttttttttttt. Well, new week is upon us and I am hopeful it is productive.

SourYoghurt:The Java you know is enough for Spring boot, once you've covered classes, interfaces , collections and generics you are safe to try SB, The rest of things to learn would mostly be around J2EE and not J2SE like that |
| Re: My 1 Year Java Learning Journey. by SourYoghurt(op): 2:48pm On Dec 09, 2025 |
qtguru:hello qtguru thanks for stopping by, I am sharing screenshot of the TOC of the text. I am currently in chap 11, I'll skip 12 and 13... But if I decide to jump into SB, what about multi threading and several other topics?

SourYoghurt:Work on your DSA Start with sicp and compiler red dragon book , mit lectures on algorithms also helps. |
| Re: My 1 Year Java Learning Journey. by qtguru(m): 9:46pm On Dec 09, 2025 |
SourYoghurt:You can cover just Lambda and streams , no need for Thread, that's mostly for Desktop or command. Spring boot is mostly writing business domain code and endpoints. It's not complex once you know your Java. You can start now. There's no need to finish J2SE it's mostly Spring boot jobs out there. Practice that then get yourself on LinkedIn and Upwork to get jobs. |

Happy new year folks, I took time out to recharge and start on a fresher note in 2026. the plan is to run through the remaining 4 "important" chapters before the end of the month(just reading, subsequent chapters have very minimal exercises so i will skip them), then hit the ground running with Spring Boot. I am torn between using Chad Darby's course or one Indian bald headed egbon and Read Spring Starts Here. but I have started using this guy's playlist to see how things looks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ubOREBxFfI&list=PL82C6-O4XrHfX-kHudgC4cPfMy6QPaF-H&index=5 qtguru what do you think?

SourYoghurt don't succumb to tutorial hell, you have enough Java knowledge to start, with LLM and AI, you can use Grok to learn the quick concept of the rest along the way. Spring boot is more close to J2EE so the little J2SE you know is enough, You need to enter Spring boot and learn more about DI, Bean and others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw0J6jYJtzw Honestly while sharing this, the Spring boot doc is more than enough. You are doing what I did, which is trying to learn 100% of everything which doesn't help, just learn enough and start a simple project. All the best |

Kaczynski:I think reading sicp and compiler red dragon book is a waste of time, his goal is to be an Enterprise dev not a system programmer, this is something you read, if you are that passionate about low-level. But the MIT is not a bad idea though |

qtguru:Hello Boss, I once stumbled upon a quote someone made on your comment here on NL, where the person was advising about SF, and how he got deep into it in Canada, and is still getting something out of it even while in Nigeria. I have been trying to get back to the quote but I can't find it. Could you please check your mentions and share, so I can get to see it again? Thanks |
