Nigeria Grants Asylum To Guinea-bissau Presidential Candidate At Embassy by Mishaya(op): 7:17am On Dec 02, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted temporary asylum to Guinea-Bissau opposition presidential candidate Fernando Dia Da Costa, offering him protection inside the Nigerian Embassy in Bissau amid credible reports of threats to his life.

The decision was formally communicated in a letter dated November 30, 2025, from Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to the President of the ECOWAS Commission.

Al-Kasim Abdulkadir, Media Aide to the Minister, confirmed the move, stating that granting refuge to Mr Da Costa “falls squarely within Nigeria’s sovereign responsibility and its longstanding commitment to regional peace, stability, and democratic governance.”

Of all the safe neighboring countries in Africa, he chose Nigeria.

Maybe he has a lot in common with the leadership of Nigeria.

Same country that held our former president hostage. Why didnt nigeria make the embassy available for GEJ when he was stranded. It took Cote D'Ivoire president to send their presidential jet to airlift him.

Brother Nigeria’s politics is complicated. Doesn’t GGEJ himself know we have an embassy in the country. Any news of him reaching out to them? We simply do not understand diplomacy and everything little thing is politicized. I have a relative that went for same election observation in Guinea Bissau and returned a day before the coup.

Most people on this forum are big disgrace to educated.

They actually don't read....they just comment without even understanding.

The person granted asylum is the opposition leader, most of them think is the president that is being accused of planning the coup.
