Good day house, please I need advise. I have a sibling with a bachelors of education in religious education and I want her to switch to hse as a profession .
We’re just about to register her for uniports pgd ohse and nebosh certifications. She won’t mind travel and starting from a low paid job to build experience. Please will this investment be worth it as someone without engineering or core science background? Reasons and the current state of the industry will be highly appreciated as we have no one in the field to discuss with. If not this, any idea of any fields with good chances for employment for someone that isnt strong in science (especially maths 🥺).
Thank you and looking forward to any and all help

Hi fellas,
i've been a practicing HSE professional for abt 5yrs in an oil company, and it's been worth the experience. while NISP is a good way to start, u can upgrade to a better recognised certification NEBOSH, they have a center that offer their certification in nigeria and it's expensive 350k. they do it twice a yr in march and sept. so u may have to wait till next yr
Hello, i know it's been a very long time. Can you send a PM, tried to do that from my end. No way. Thanks.

1. Fire Fighting training comes at various levels. From Basis Fire Fighting to Advanced.

2. Depending on the industry, some industry regulators accredit trainers and will not recognize any certificate from a non-accredited training center. Please beware of this. For instance the oil and gas industry depending on whether UPSTREAM or MIDSTREAM&DOWNSTREAM the trainer must have an OGISP from NUPRC or NMDPRA.

Be sure you are selecting the right choice depending on your circumstances and why you need the training. Determine the level and the context.

Good luck!

The HSE Discipline and Profession needs to be understood.
There is the general appreciation knowledge and skills. Mainly under occupational health and safety. And there are other in-depth and specialist knowledge and skills that require certain background knowledge like in Engineering.

Let me give you an example. If you like have 10000 NEBOSH IGCs FROM THE MOON. I WONT LET YOU TOUCH A VALVE IN MY PROCESS PLANT. NEBOSH IGC It is just a high level HSE Appreciation/Basic OHS course. It is not Chemical Process Safety. No. To be proficient at Chemical process safety it is usually good to have an Engineering degree.

So this discipline has General Areas and Specific Areas.

Tell your sis she can work as an OHS Officer/Professional/ Advisor and other fancy names.

Job Opportunities
——————————-

1.It is really difficult to judge the demand for HSE Professionals right now. Nigeria for many reason does not have, create or keep records.

2. HSE culture is poor and many industries are poorly regulated. Consequently many companies see HSE as a problem. And with poor HSE regulation there is nothing encouraging companies to comply. First there must be regulators, then the rules, then companies will need dedicated HSE Teams. For now I can tell you that with unserious regulators no one is compelled to hire HSE professionals as much as they would have done if regulators and inspectors where busy.

It is a difficult question to answer. She should complete her program and give it a shot. She can also try to work as a consultant too. Or get a job first in a consulting company before eyeing the Oil Companies. No one knows her “Chi” or her “Ori” . We can only encourage her to give it her best and hope.

Also she should first get ISPON. It is law that she gets that before even practicing in Nigeria. But as Nigeria no serious who send? Nobody cares. Besides ISPON will enable her immerse herself in the fundamentals of the discipline before paying for NEBOSH.

Tell her not to forget to subscribe to HSE groups on LinkedIn and get feeds from this niche. These will help her immensely immerse herself in the profession.

hello...good afternoon everyone, i humbly wish to ask if there's any "affordable" plug where i can do this hse 1,2,3 course pls...the price im seeing on some sites is terrifying
None that I know of. And most of the other strong professionals here like myself will advise you to be careful before you go pay for a certificate that will not be recognized when it matters the most.

Always Use credible accredited training service providers.
