(BREAKING) Adebayo emerges PDP gov candidate in Adeleke’s absence

Adebayo Adedamola was declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2026 Osun State governorship election after the party’s primary in Osogbo on Tuesday. The primary’s chairman, Humphrey Abba, announced that Adedamola secured 919 votes out of the 957 ballots cast, with 20 votes declared void .

The primary proceeded despite Governor Ademola Adeleke’s resignation from the PDP on November 4, 2025. Adeleke’s name remained on the ballot because the voting papers had already been printed, and the party’s secretary, Sunday Solarin, warned delegates that any votes for Adeleke would be “wasted” .

Accreditation of delegates was completed by 11:35 a.m., with 957 of the 990 expected delegates cleared to vote . The exercise was monitored by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a PDP national committee led by Humphrey Abba. Security was tight, with personnel from the Department of State Security, the Nigeria Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed at the venue .

The PDP’s national organising secretary, Theophilus Shan, insisted the primary would go ahead as scheduled, dismissing earlier statements from the state PDP chapter that the vote could not be held due to internal party crises .

According to the INEC timetable, parties have until December 15 to submit their candidates for the August 8, 2026 governorship poll .

How can they be having internal crisis for a party that has only one candidate?

Adeleke should have been the only name on the ballot since he is the only one left in the race.
