Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has criticised calls from the United States for Nigeria to abolish Sharia law and disband Hisbah commissions, describing the move as an attempt to interfere in the country’s internal matters.

He issued the reaction on Wednesday after a report emerged that US lawmakers were urged on Tuesday to pressure the Nigerian government to end the implementation of Sharia law in northern states and to dissolve Hisbah bodies.

According to the report, experts warned that these systems were contributing to patterns of anti-Christian persecution.

The appeal was made during a joint House briefing held in response to United States President Donald Trump’s October directive and the subsequent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.

At the briefing, Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow, Dr. Ebenezer Obadare, said violent groups such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and radicalised Fulani militants were exploiting Sharia structures and Hisbah officials to push extremist ideology, enforce forced conversions, and operate with minimal resistance.

Reacting to the development in a post on X, Ahmad said he did not wish to continue engaging the topic but considered the development as a clear intrusion into Nigeria’s internal affairs.

He stressed that the United States had no authority to determine how Nigerians should live, govern themselves, or practise their faith, noting that Nigeria is a sovereign country with its own constitutional and institutional frameworks.

He tweeted, “In as much as I don’t want to continue talking about this, but I must say this what a blatant intrusion into our internal affairs! The United States has absolutely no right to dictate to us how we should live, govern ourselves or practice our faith as Nigeria is a sovereign nation with our own Constitution, democratic institutions, cultural values and legal frameworks.”

Name one reasonable significance and impact of sharia law and hisbah in the country?

Northern states practicing it has not improved in any way only to destroy alcohol yet collect vat from same alcohol,

If not hypocrisy, sharia law doesn't apply to the rich only the poor, same hisbah commandant that was caught with a prostitute in Kano, in sharia law he's suppose to be put to death, but it doesn't apply to him, only the poor, so tell us the significance if not pure hypocrisy and harne.

They are not dictating but being reasonable. If the law applies strictly to muslims and doesnt impose on people considered within islamic territory, fine, they can execute 10,000 of themselves a day for blasphemy.
The problem is when you start imposing it on territories and not humans on a consenting basis. You want to stone all the Deborahs for blasphemy because they allegedly insult someone with no Nigerian citizenship and cannot even back it up with evidence even though they claimed it was within a whatsapp group chat.

You are saying because muslims are more within a state, Christians must abide by laws Muslims regard. Thats crazy.

Banning sharia law will not change anything. There is a need for the renegotiation of this entity called Nigeria.

Are we really one? Is the orientation of the North in alignment with that of the South? Is there a sense of unity, purpose and nationhood among the ethnic groups that makes up this country?

The problem of Nigeria is beyond sharia law and hisbah. It is even beyond this so called fulani bandit. The earlier we accept and start working towards a peaceful dismembering of this entity called Nigeria, the better for us all.

Nigeria is an artificial creation, it is not organic. Issues like sharia, fulani bandit, boko haram, militancy etc, are not the real problem. They are just symptoms of the problem.

I have a suggestion why not the north create a country of their own and practice Shari'a without any disturbance from anyone? Won't that be nice as it's obvious Shari'a cannot exist with any modern constitution. Won't that be nice?
