I presently work in BANK A (a tier 1 leading commercial bank in Nigeria. I’ve been placed on indefinite loan recovery suspension since a month ago, and still yet to recover the loan as the customer (debtor) is at large. Prior to now, I’ve been applying for next grade in other banks, and doing interviews, I just recently got a mail to come for documentation and medicals with BANK B (also a top tier 1 bank). BANK B will most likely run background checks on me. I don’t know if these checks will be before offer letter or before confirmation. Now my question is, should I go ahead to accept the offer from BANK B, while I’m still following up on the loan recovery for BANK A, or should I just decline the offer. Please experienced people should assist advice, thank you |

Being on indefinite loan recovery suspension is NOT the same as outright termination. In almost all Nigerian banks, this means: You remain an employee You continue to earn salary (or partial salary) Your HR file is marked as pending resolution of an outstanding credit exposure This status can show up during background checks if: Your current bank is contacted directly They are asked about disciplinary status... Accept the offer from BANK B but handle the exit from BANK A smartly. You do NOT need to decline Bank B. Many bankers in Nigeria have moved while under loan recovery processes as long as they did not abandon the case and kept HR informed. What BANK B really wants: That you weren’t dismissed for fraud That you are not under CBN blacklist That you have no integrity breach report Your case is loan-recovery related, not fraud indictment... Go ahead and take BANK B’s offer. Maintain professional follow-up with BANK A until exit clearance. Do not resign until you have offer letter in hand. If BANK A tries to use you indefinitely to chase bad debt, you have every right to proceed with your career. |

Mrschiago:Why are you being placed on indefinite loan recovery suspension? Did you co-sign the loan for the customer who is nowhere to be found? Na both of una take the loan together abi wetin? 🫤 If your salary has been impacted, I would recommend you go for the second job. What have you got to loose? 🫤 |

Mee346:Why would a bank place an employee on such in such a state, though? 🫤 |

Kobojunkie:Before confirmation at BANK B, they will run background checks with BANK A to confirm employment status, credit status, employer history etc If they find out that there is a bad loan tied to my name, it might lead to outright dismissal |

Mrschiago:Did you take out the loan yourself -- serve as a guarantor the loan, maybe-- that the bank would see fit to count it against you personally? 🤔 |

Kobojunkie:No, I was the staff that disbursed the loan to the customer |

Mrschiago:So, a staff that disburses a loan to a customer is made personally responsible for whether the customer pays for it or not? ![]() |
