Confraternities in Nigeria began in the '90s. Pyrates Confraternity was the first in Nigeria, it was created as a social organization for promising students. Professor Wole Soyinka and a group of six friends namely, Ralph Opara, Ikhehare Aig-Imokhuede, Sylvanus Egbuchie, Nathaniel Oyelola, Pius Oleghe, and Olumuyiwa Awe formed the Pyrate Confraternity at the University College Ibadan (now UI).

Fela was to die 14 years later while Achebe died 31 years later.

One was probably Africa's greatest afro-jazzist while the other was a master storyteller.

These men could have easily qualified as prophets if they had lived a century before ours.

Men who saw the future, drew our attention to the bobby traps ahead and proffered solutions to our pervasive fault lines.

One gave us lyrical tunes that fore warned us of the grim future ahead, we neglected the vivid messages and instead danced to the rhythm with imbecilic frenzy.

The other decided to encapsulate the turbulence ahead in literary works but we were too busy surfing "Facebook" than "facing our books" .

That future has suddenly dawned on us, the centre can no longer support our differences, we are now suffering and smiling as we fall apart.

They were men indeed !

The malt liquor in the background means it was taken in the US. Back when traveling out of the nation was affordable and most Nigerians looked forward to a bright future. Many japa’d that year and till today haven’t been able to return. Them full London and US with endless stories about “the old Nigeria.”
