Senate Removes Senator Shehu Buba Umar as Chairman of National Security Committee

The Nigerian Senate has removed Senator Shehu Buba Umar (APC, Bauchi South) from his position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. This decision was announced on December 2, 2025, as part of a broader reconstitution of several standing committees, including those on Air Force and National Planning.

The move follows the committee's dissolution the previous week, amid public outcry over escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria and concerns about the effectiveness of the leadership.

Umar has been reassigned as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry. Youth groups and civil society organizations, such as the Bauchi State Youth Democratic Assembly, have welcomed the change, calling it a "responsible intervention" and urging an independent probe into Umar's tenure.

The removal has reignited discussions around serious, longstanding accusations against Umar, including: Links to Terrorist Groups and Bandits: Civil society reports and activist groups like the People's Progressive Movement (PPM) have alleged that Umar sponsored Fulani bandits and had ties to terrorist organizations operating in Nigeria, potentially undermining national security efforts. These claims date back to at least September 2025, with calls for his suspension from security-related roles.

Social media posts and reports circulating widely online claim Umar was "on the radar" of U.S. intelligence agencies due to these alleged links. Accusations include funding pilgrimages to Mecca for bandits and terrorists.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who chairs the Selection Committee, confirmed these adjustments during plenary sessions, emphasizing the need for fresh leadership to address national security challenges.
