Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has issued a firm directive to troops on the frontline to immediately engage armed bandits on sight, marking a renewed aggressive stance against insecurity across the country.

Musa, who was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday following a rigorous screening session, said the directive is necessary to protect citizens and restore confidence in the nation’s fight against violent crime.

“We must act fast to secure our communities,” General Musa told lawmakers. “Troops are fully empowered to confront armed bandits wherever they encounter them. Waiting for further instructions only emboldens criminals.”

The Defence Minister stressed that Nigeria is dealing with ruthless groups who thrive on fear and delayed military response, adding that troops must be proactive and decisive.

His remarks come as several states continue to battle rising attacks from bandit groups targeting rural communities, travellers, and farmers.

Musa assured that under his leadership, the Ministry of Defence will intensify coordinated operations, while strengthening collaboration among military services and security agencies.

“We are fully committed. Nigerians will see a visible shift in our approach and results,” he declared.

The directive has already generated conversations nationwide, with citizens expressing hope that a firmer response will reclaim territories affected by criminal activities.

General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu earlier this week and is expected to resume immediately to oversee Nigeria’s defence strategy.
