Tech billionaire and X (formerly Twitter) owner, Elon Musk, on Saturday publicly called for the abolition of the European Union and the full restoration of sovereignty to its member States.

In a post on his X account, Musk wrote, "The EU should be abolished, and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that Governments can better represent their people."

Musk’s statement comes at a time when the EU is grappling with internal tensions, including the rise of nationalist Parties, disagreements over migration policy, and ongoing debates about the balance of power between Brussels and national Governments.

In several member States, calls for renegotiating EU treaties or reclaiming more national control have grown louder in recent years, even as public support for the Union remains strong overall.

The billionaire’s remarks also arrive amid heightened friction between X and EU regulators.

Since Musk’s takeover of the platform, Brussels has repeatedly accused the company of failing to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA), a sweeping law that requires major platforms to police illegal content, increase transparency, and curb disinformation.

The European Commission has already launched probes into X’s content moderation practices, warning of potential penalties if the platform is found non-compliant.

Some social media users interpreted Musk’s latest post as tacit support for Eurosceptic movements, while others criticised him for interfering in political debates beyond his business expertise.

“If abolishing supranational authority is ‘freedom,’ then surely the U.S. should also dissolve itself, return sovereignty to each state, let Texans speak for Texas, Californians for California, and stop Washington from governing 330 million people like a single empire,” one X user, @OopsGuess wrote in response, while supporters argued that centralized EU bureaucracy has grown too powerful and unaccountable.

“You want the EU broken for ‘democracy,’ yet a continental federation under one capital sounds perfectly natural when the capital is yours.

“Freedom isn’t decentralization only when applied to others. If fragmentation is a virtue, lead by example, disband America first,” the user added.

As of the time of filing this report, EU officials had not issued formal reactions to Musk’s comments.

Musk, who frequently weighs in on geopolitical issues using his social media platform, has grown increasingly vocal on matters of governance and free speech.

His call to dismantle one of the world’s most significant political and economic blocs could intensify ongoing debates about the role and influence of tech billionaires in shaping global public discourse.

What are the benefits of the EU?

A visa to one EU country allows free movement among EU countries.

Collapse of customs and borders allows free movement of goods and people: liberalization of trade. That is why despite leaving the EU, the UK still wanted access to the trade market. A common currency means easy exchange of goods and services and inflation control: if a country is struggling, other stronger EU countries can provide buffers as seen in the case of Spain and Greece.

Cross-country benefit. You can be the citizen of one EU country and easily move to settle in another one without the immigration checks. As a citizen, the EU job market is open to all EU citizens. They are given priority before Americans or other nationals.

Reduced fees for all EU citizens in all EU countries.

The Nigerian population is 51% of the EU population. Now imagine Nigeria coming together, speaking with one voice. That unity alone can threaten any interest.

As a bloc, the EU is a powerhouse that cannot be overlooked by global powers. United, they offer a threat to entrenched interests. By asking for the balkanization of the EU into individual countries, Elon is calling for a weakened Europe.

Together, the EU is strong. So we say: Viva EU!

It's high time for that.

If the EU was dissolved, prices of foodstuff and a host of other things will shoot up all over Europe because something will come back...the customs post, with all the tarrifs, and dues therein.

Also, difficulty in travelling. Today, you can travel from Warsaw to Paris without a passport. Bring back the customs border, and one would have to be doing stuff like getting visas for two or three countries depending on the type of journey.(modified...and it won't be just europeans..it includes foreigners like nigerians. If you are a sportsman or woman, or a businessperson who has business in europe, or even a student studying there,travelling around Europe without the Schengen visa or EU being there is going to be tough and difficult...you go end up with visa applications tire. People forget how bad the good old days were).

Here in Nigeria, several years ago, a former boss of mine was in charge of a group trip to Liberia (christian fellowhship things) and all the participants needed was their ECOWAS Passport. If the trip was in say 1982, and by road, the number of stops and visas needed...

He should go and abolish it! Yeye dey smell!
