Military coups, insecurity: ECOWAS Declares State Of Emergency In West Africa by politicoNG(op): 1:09pm On Dec 09, 2025
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region, citing rising security threats.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, announced the declaration on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level held in Abuja.

The meeting was convened in response to a series of coups and failed mutinies in the sub-region.

Touray emphasised that the recent developments underscore “the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”

There is no need for emergency, all these leaders should purge themselves. Most of them want to perpetuate themselves in power till death. Benin just change from 5 to 7 years. Alhassan Quatara is doing 4th term rather than 2. Most of the assemblies are puppets and rubber stamps. People are getting tired. There will be more coups, unless good governance. grin grin grin grin angry angry

instead of them to declare state of emergency on the abuse of democracy in Africa by corrupt politicians, civilian dictators and enemies of democracy.

Solidify democratic practices, free and fair elections and ensure good governance, transparency and accountability by political holders.

Yet they couldn't declare state of emergency on security against fulani trans-national terrorist activities in West Africa.
Elon Must is right. Useless organizations like ECOWAS should be disbanded for peace and tranquility to return to West African countries.

Face the useless sit-tight tyrannical dictators plaguing the subregion and continent first. Useless people. First declare state of emergency on the corrupt politicians abusing constitutional processes and democracy

Why Did Burkina Faso Detain a Nigerian Military Aircraft?

A major diplomatic storm is brewing in West Africa. Just hours after Nigerian fighter jets assisted Benin in stopping an attempted coup, a Nigerian military aircraft has been forced to land and detained in Burkina Faso. The Burkinabè Armed Forces claim the plane acted “suspiciously,” sparking serious questions about airspace violations, regional alliances, and the growing divide between ECOWAS and the AES military bloc.

ECOWAS need to have a srong military wing, with good air capabilities, to go after jihadists and coupists, and all forms of terrorism. ECOWAS nations can contribute at least 10million dollars each in a space of one year, to build its capabilities...and of course member nations can contribute as well, but it needs it's independent strength, just like NATO.

West African leaders should exhibit exemplary leadership and all these coup plotters will be discouraged.

It is the failure of leadership that is giving rise to coups.

Honestly, very foolish set of humans. They are puppets to mainly france. We are getting tired of useless democracy where elections are rigged massively, everything is bad, nothing works, youths are running away from their country. More will come, the region will collapse. u cant keep people like this for ever, they will revolt one day.

And the coupist would be better?

See how you PDP people are calling for coup now that the tide has turned, while APC people are opposing coup, yet none of you are interested in good government. Na your turn or nobody gets anything.

Has Coup made burkina a better country...where one third of the nation is run by jihadis.? Mali, where the capital is under siege from millitants, and mercs are busy commiting atrocities in the bush? Or even Niger?

OK o. I have seen it so many times. Coup today, shouting for democracy tomorrow...

Ok o. Make una dey enjoy. cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

Tinubu is very bad, and I know I never vote for am, but Nigeria's problems won't be solved by army rule, ...considering that by 1999, we were in the same bad state we were in in 1983.
