Nigeria withdraws fighter aircraft as situation stabilises in Benin Republic

Nigeria has withdrawn the fighter aircraft earlier deployed to the Benin Republic after authorities assessed that the security situation in the neighbouring country had stabilised following Sunday’s attempted military coup.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the aircraft, which were deployed from Lagos for surveillance and regional monitoring, were ordered to return to base afternoon after receiving updated intelligence indicating that the situation was brought under control and there was “no immediate threat to Nigeria’s territorial security.”

Zagazola report that a military coup attempt against the democratic government of President Patrice Talon was decisively thwarted on Sunday, with loyalist forces retaking full control of the capital by nightfall. The crisis began when mutineers in military uniforms launched an early hours operation to overthrow the government.

Their initial assault on the presidential residence in Cotonou was repelled. Failing to capture the seat of power, the rebel faction then seized the state-run Office de Radiodiffusion et Télévision du Bénin (ORTB), taking control of the national broadcast signal.

The situation escalated rapidly, but the government’s response was swift. Units of the National Guard and loyal armed forces mobilized, surrounding the television station and isolating the mutineers. By late Sunday, security forces had secured key government installations and were in firm command of the city.

The situation is under control. The National Guard has everything surrounded,” a senior security official stated on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the operation.
According to local media reports, including 24 Hours In Benin, the mutineers remained barricaded inside the television station as of Sunday evening. Authorities confirmed that negotiations were underway to secure their peaceful surrender.

President Patrice Talon, who was reportedly secure at an undisclosed location, has not yet made a public statement.
There were no immediate reports of widespread violence or casualties in the streets of Cotonou, which were described as tense but calm following the initial alarms.

The government is expected to issue a formal statement and provide further details on the incident and the identity of the mutineers in the coming hours.

Guys please read this interesting article about Abunakar Shekaus brief transition into power, his life and death. This is a well detailed report and a eye opener into security issues we are facing.

It seems unavoidable to conclude that Nigeria’s military was aware of Shekau’s long-term presence in the Sambisa Forest, yet consistently chose not to invade that territory. This region was regarded as a no-go zone, clearly indicating that his ongoing existence benefited certain interests.

The suggestion is that allowing Boko Haram/ISWAP and Shekau in particular to persist created a continuous state of conflict, which legitimized substantial defense expenditures, obscure security contracts, and an unending stream of “counter-terrorism” funding.
Honestly we dont have good leaders both in the military and governance.

Army troops neutralise 11 terrorists, recover weapons in Sabon Birni ambush in Sokoto

Troops of 8 Division Nigerian Army, conducting Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised 11 terrorists during a precision ambush in Kurawa Village, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Sources reliably informed Zagazola Makama that the operation was executed at about 0645 hours, on Sunday following credible human intelligence on the movement of a terrorist group attempting to cross towards Tara village in the same council area.

The coordinated strike was carried out by the 8 Division Garrison Strike Team leading to the successful interception of the terrorists along their crossing route.

According to the sources, the troops recovered eight AK-47 rifles after the encounter, while a follow-up exploitation operation to further clear the area is currently underway.

The ambush, described as “swift, surgical and professionally executed”, is one of the latest gains recorded under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the ongoing theatre-wide offensive aimed at dismantling terrorist and bandit networks across Sokoto, Zamfara and neighbouring corridors.

Military authorities said more details would be provided after the ongoing exploitation and assessment of the battlefield.

Zagazola reports that 8 Division has in recent months intensified both kinetic and intelligence-driven operations, leading to the degradation of several criminal enclaves and improved security across the region

CHIEF OF THE NAVAL STAFF FLAGS OFF ANNUAL SEA EXERCISE TAGGED EXERCISE ERU OBODO 2025

On Monday, 8 December 2025, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal), flagged of the CNS Annual Sea Exercise (CASI) tagged "EX ERU OBODO" on board Nigerian Navy Ship KADA in Apapa, Lagos. The name "ERU OBODO" is a Yoruba term for "Guardian (or fear) of Our National Waters" indicating that criminals must be scared to traverse Nigerian waters. The Sea Exercise which involves the deployment of 16 Nigerian Navy (NN) Ships, 3 Helicopters and the full spectrum of NN Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) facilities in addition to the requisite number of personnel to patrol the sea area outside Lagos waters and the wider Gulf of Guinea is designed to first assess the navy's operational readiness and showcase her capability to secure the maritime space of the West African sub-region. The CNS further explained that the Exercise would test NN ability to dominate the maritime space, ensure freedom of action for legitimate commerce while deterring any form of illegality.

Earlier, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha who is also the Officer in Tactical Command (OTC) stated that several manoeuvres would be conducted during the exercise. These include Anti-Piracy Operation, Anti- Illegal Oil Bunkering Operation, Search and Rescue Operation (SAR) and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Operations.

The CNS concluded by appreciating the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his unwavering support to the Armed Forces in general and the Navy in particular. He also reiterated that NN was ready and capable to undertake any mission as directed by the President.

I hope these efforts at arms production will involve installation of real metal processing capabilities, such that we are able to produce weapons from scratch, not simply assembling weapon parts.
We should aim to be able to produce these small arms from basic steel and plastic sheets, tubes and ingots, so that even if the technical partner leaves tomorrow, we can still produce those arms because our raw materials are not special parts procured from some international supplier, but basic steel and plastic commodities which can be procured anywhere on the local or global markets.
