Lies VS Facts: Revisiting The Aregbesola Years In Osun - Olakunle Ayorinde by Josepholome(op): 12:47pm On Dec 10, 2025
Public debates about Rauf Aregbesola’s time as Osun governor often swing between praise and criticism, but many arguments overlook the economic realities of that period. The nationwide recession from 2014 to 2016 hit state finances hard, with 23 states unable to pay salaries at all. Osun faced a sharp drop in federal allocation and internally generated revenue, forcing difficult decisions.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Aregbesola intentionally paid half salaries. In reality, the Labour Government Salary Apportionment Committee, which was made up of labour leaders and government officials, jointly agreed on a temporary modulated payment structure to prevent mass layoffs.

Throughout the recession, over 70 percent of workers (junior staff, teachers, health workers and local government employees) continued receiving full salaries and pensions. The modulation applied mainly to senior officers and political appointees.

Another widespread falsehood is that Aregbesola’s successor, Gboyega Oyetola, inherited the salary modulation. Records show this is untrue. A few outstanding balances of the modulated salaries were already cleared before Aregbesola handed over, and full salary payment had resumed eight months before the end of his administration.

Beyond the salary debate, Osun continued major development programmes. The School Feeding initiative served 254,000 pupils daily and later became a national policy. Thousands of classrooms were constructed or rebuilt, the OYES youth programme absorbed unemployed youths, and road projects continued across the state despite the financial strain.

It is true that the recession created emotional and financial pain for many families, and their feelings are valid. But emotions cannot replace verified facts. Transparency was maintained throughout the crisis, and Aregbesola’s strong grassroots support today reflects public recognition of his long term developmental impact.

The Aregbesola years were a mix of economic challenges and visible transformation. Narratives based on half truths may trend online, but they cannot erase the documented reforms, infrastructural investments and social programmes that reshaped Osun during one of Nigeria’s toughest economic periods.

What I am yet to understand from people is that, would they had rather he paid half salary then or laid off people? To me, half bread is better than none. Maybe he could have properly communicated the challenges faced by the government then.

The APC miscreants now using the salary payment to criticize Aregbesola defended him vehemently in 2014. So, they didn’t know about this all this while?

Almost all the governors were struggling this period na. Especially, those that depend on federal allocation bar Lagos and some other states in the South-East.

If I could remember, even Okonjo Iweala this period, was finding it difficult to pay salary at the federal level. It was a trying period.

Aregbesola’s tenure in Osun witnessed unprecedented development. All these salary and half salary talks are just to tarnish his image and diminish the impact he is making with the ADC in the South-West. I can see through these APC boys. Ogun go kpai you if you attack me here. Ewus.

For those of us who were in Osun then, na political appointees and senior civil servants this half salary affect and it was measure taken to manage the situation occasioned by the recession.

If joining the ADC to dislodge the rudderless government of APC from power by Aregbe is now what is resurrecting all these attacks on him by APC people, then they are jittery and their criticism is just done out of malice. We have serious issues affecting us abeg not all this one. Sigh.

So, during the recession, 70% of the work force which includes health workers, teachers, local government employees, junior staff were all receiving full salaries? If so, then nothing really bad.

Aregbesola tried in Osun state. I still prefer his government to that of Oyetola sef. I don't understand why Oyetola canceled the OYES youth programme, a program he should have continued.

Why would Ogu kpai them for disagreeing with you? You shouldn't be scared of debate if you are sure of your facts.

You are acting like the failed politicians always fighting imaginary enemies with reverse psychology instead of addressing the issue at hand grin

Re: Lies VS Facts: Revisiting The Aregbesola Years In Osun - Olakunle Ayorinde by sangresan(m):
This idiot didn't mention Aregbe's white elephant projects including the Ido Osun Airport and the Dagbolu International Market.
He didn't mention the fact that Buhari gave the state governors bailout three times, but Aregbe refused to pay up the salary arrears.

He claimed some levels continued to collect full salary during the period, but he didn't mention the percentage of Osun Civil Servants who were actually between Level 1 and 7, and who were entitled to the full salary. Apart his O'Yes employees, no Osun State Worker with NCE certificate and above could have been below level 8. So, Aregbe and his minions are just fooling themselves with this ludicrous claim. Did Aregbe employ primary and secondary school certificate holders for him to claim 70% of Osun workers were in Level 7 and below? Let him publish the full list of Osun Civil Servants and their levels with grades.

Should we talk about his ill-thought, retrogressive policies like the merger of schools and the introduction of a single uniform throughout the state's public schools? Is it not true that his son got the contract for Opon Imo and his wife was also linked to the single uniform production?
Re: Lies VS Facts: Revisiting The Aregbesola Years In Osun - Olakunle Ayorinde by sangresan(m): 2:51pm On Dec 10, 2025
We supported Aregbe during his first term and warned him when he began with those anti-people policies. Let his minions know that some of us have records of his policies, achievements and failures. So, you can never succeed in pulling the wool over our eyes in an attempt to rewrite history.

Was it not Aregbe and some other governors who confronted Okonjo Iweala to share all the money in the federation purse before the aforementioned recession of 2014? Even at that, Aregbe continued to mortgage the future of the state by borrowing heavily. By the time the recession came and the banks started deducting Osun humongous debts from source, the state under Aregbe had little left to pay for workers salaries.

It's false to claim that the recession was solely responsible for Aregbe's inability to pay full salary. NO. He borrowed for his white elephant projects and refused to even pay the arrears when Buhari released bailout funds for states.

Hired hands that is blind to the facts and now wants to rewrite history. Aregbesola is the worst governor in the history of Osun State and that is a fact.

It is all politics now in Osun. People have not forgotten how he governed them, he will be reminded of his half salary policy while campaigning for his ADC candidate. Did the recession also make him handicapped as Minister of Interior? Yeye..
Re: Lies VS Facts: Revisiting The Aregbesola Years In Osun - Olakunle Ayorinde by grandstar(m): 4:15pm On Dec 10, 2025
The truth was that he overpromised, not considering financial consideration during his campaign.

Many think governments have unlimited amounts of funds to xcarry out everything under the sun, despite repeatedly hearing the word budget since they young.

You promised to hire 10,000 new workers- did he think the money would fall from the sky? It will come out from the monthly allocation and the IGR the government collects.

All governments suffer from the economic curse: unlimited wants, vs limited resources.

It is only when they assume office they understand this reality. By then, it is too late.

Oshiomole who fought OBJ in his two terms as president afainst subsidy removal only realized that the fuel subsidy was gulping a lot of money and it should go.

Aregbesola, despite being a commissioner in Lagos state for two terms did not realize this is shocking.

His overpromising eventually caught up with him. The 2016 recession was extremely painful due to Buhari's economic illiteracy, but Aregbesola shares some blame for the crisis.

•Where did Current Govn Adeleke got Money he has been Paying The Workers and the Retiree-since coming onboard as OSUN governor?
•Where is Aregbesola Opon- Imo' Now - if he indeed performed well?
How did his proposal of A Single Uniform 🥋 jettisoned,as the whole Citizens rise against him and is that what we need this 21st Century?
Why do much Debts Incurred on OSUN Or was it justified?
I beg OP, Elections is around the Corner here in OSUN,so we expect so much LAMBA from Politicians footsoldiers, the above is not an exception!
