Tyres with ” J “speed rating should not be on your car if you speed more than 100 kilo meters per hours, this is why you understand Tyre speed rating this season

Some Tyres are made with less quality material and so they are not designed for speed

Check your Tyre speed ratings if you like speeding like me

I’ve heard someone complain on the radio that his new Tyre blown off on high speed ,

Safety First!
It’s festive period

Check the image attached to know the suitable one for you

Let’s promote safety this December season Sir.

Nigerians have never taken note of this
Re: Know Your Tyre Speed Rating by fineboynl(m):
How many Nigerians knows about tyre marking and specifications. Those things are not for us.

We still buy used expired tyres and now that new is costly.

When they said maximum that does not mean it will burst when exceeding that. It's just a cautionary thing to know. Otherwise we would have witnnes a lot of problem in this country.

Another thing is not applicable to used tyrs. They changed and dump for a reason. Old or damage tyres. Patches and repaired types. If your tyres are old don't even bother to be checking them. Go buy new tyres.

Also if you are not doing over 150- 200kmh just inside the city why should you buy expensive Tyrese. That why they produce several categories to meet everyone needs.

Most tyre manufacturers maintain that a tyre that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tyre manufacturer’s original speed rating, even after being repaired because the tyre manufacturer can’t control the quality of the repair. Hence, it is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tyres that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded.

The most common tyre speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications are shown below:

1. Tyre Rating: L

Maximum speed: 75 mph 120 km/h
Typical application: Off-Road & Light Truck Tyres

2. Tyre Rating:M

Maximum speed: 81 mph 130 km/h
Typical application: Temporary Spare Tyres

3. Tyre Rating: N

Maximum speed: 87 mph 140km/h

4. Tyre Ratingtongue

Maximum speed: 93 mph 150 km/h

5. Tyre Rating:Q

Maximum speed: 99 mph 160 km/h

6. Tyre Rating:R

Maximum speed: 106 mph 170 km/h
Typical application:H.D. Light Truck Tyres

7. Tyre Rating: S

Maximum speed: 112 mph 180 km/h
Typical application: Family Sedans & Vans

8. Tyre Rating: T

Maximum speed: 118 mph 190 km/h
Typical application: Family Sedans & Vans

9. Tyre Rating: U

Maximum speed: 124 mph 200 km/h

10. Tyre Rating: H

Maximum speed:130 mph 210 km/h
Typical application:Sport Sedans & Coupes

11. Tyre Rating: V

Maximum speed: 149 mph 240 km/h
Typical application:Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

Z-speed rated tyres are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph; how far above 149 mph was not identified. This ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W and Y speed ratings to identify the tyres that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.
12. Tyre Rating: W

Maximum speed: 168 mph 270 km/h
Typical application:Exotic Sports Cars

13. Tyre Rating: Y

Maximum speed: 186 mph 300 km/h
Typical application:Exotic Sports Cars

Your engine might be able to do the speed but your tyres can betray you. Many have left the world due to the mistake of stretching the limits of their tyres.

Re: Know Your Tyre Speed Rating by higgs: 8:04pm On Dec 11, 2025
Any speed about 70-80 km/hr,you are simply wishing for death. Unfortunately many Nigerians don't understand that.
Re: Know Your Tyre Speed Rating by CaptainFM1: 9:20pm On Dec 11, 2025
If you have mixed tire ratings, the maximum speed you should do on your vehicle should be less than that of tire with the lowest rating. (Safety factor/margin has to be considered).

Always remember this,
"A chain is as strong as it's weakest link". And you don't want to get to the weakest link max limit.

You shouldn't have mix tire ratings though, unless it is specified for the vehicle or due to extenuating circumstances and conditions.

This is among what VIO should check during vehicle administration licensing, but they are more interested in going on the road to collect money. Corruption everywhere! Wall to wall corruption in the country!

Re: Know Your Tyre Speed Rating by OkanlawonB(m): 7:13am On Dec 12, 2025
A resposible driver should not drive more than 100km/h on nigerian highways for obvious reasons like uncertain state of the roads(potholes).

Countries in Europe with predictably good highways have reasonable speedlimits, in Switzerland it is 120kmh, Austria 130kmh. Though no speedlimit on german highways , a reasonable speed to drive is between 130kmh and 150kmh.

Eventhough most of the tyres sold in Europe have the minimum speed ratings of H, V or W, who is guided by this on european highways? you will rather be guided by the lawful speedlimits of your location.
