Governor Siminalayi Joseph Fubara has successfully overturned what many insiders describe as one of the most elaborate impeachment traps in recent Nigerian politics.

With a surprise defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday evening, Fubara outpaced the plans of his political opponents and effectively neutralised their long orchestrated strategies to remove him from office.



Two days earlier, the governor had summoned an emergency stakeholders meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt, where he disclosed his intention to join the ruling APC.

The announcement came barely twenty four hours after he held a close door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja, a meeting now understood to have produced the final agreement on his political realignment.



Before this dramatic turn, Speaker Martyns Amaewhule and sixteen other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had announced their own defection to the APC. Their move triggered confusion across the state’s political space, leaving only ten PDP lawmakers standing, alongside three pro Fubara members who remained under suspension since the emergency rule.

The Southern Examiner investigations reveal that the lawmakers’ earlier decision to convert their legislative quarters into the Assembly’s permanent chamber was a strategic move designed to prepare the grounds for Fubara’s impeachment.



To actualise their plan, the lawmakers had rolled out a long list of allegations including claims of constitutional breaches, financial recklessness and obstruction of oversight functions.

They subsequently adjourned for the Christmas break with a resumption date of January sixteen, 2026, a timing crafted to ensure the governor failed to present the 2026 budget within the constitutionally required period. That failure, they believed, would trigger a fresh impeachment process in the new year.

According to inside sources, the plan had been perfected down to the role each actor would play. With alleged backing from the Rivers State chief judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, the lawmakers intended to remove Fubara swiftly, paving the way for Speaker Amaewhule, a first cousin to Nyesom Wike, to assume office as acting governor for three months.

After the acting period, Amaewhule would then contest the governorship election while still occupying the seat. Thr Southern Examiner also learnt that some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission had been quietly notified of the arrangement.

The plot was an extension of the earlier failed scheme which led President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers and appoint retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator. That decision infuriated Wike, who publicly admitted that he never wanted emergency rule but had pushed for outright removal of the governor.

It was after learning of this renewed impeachment plan that Fubara hurriedly sought permission for the presidential visit on Monday evening. During the meeting, the final arrangements for his defection were sealed, putting him under the protection of the national leadership of the ruling party.



His remarks at the stakeholders meeting confirmed the central role the president played in his political survival. Fubara told the gathering that without God working through President Tinubu, he would have been recorded in history as a former governor already. His repeated calls for Rivers people to support his new political direction drew thunderous applause.

Analysts say Fubara’s switch to the APC places him within the same political fold as Amaewhule, the defected lawmakers and even Wike, who has long been juggling positions within both parties. With this alignment, the impeachment plot collapses entirely.

It is now expected that the twenty seven lawmakers will cut short their Christmas break for the governor to present the 2026 budget later this month, paving the way for approval in early January.

A high level reconciliation meeting between Wike, the governor and the lawmakers is being scheduled at the instance of President Tinubu to smoothen remaining tensions and ensure stability in the state.



Speaking earlier during the inauguration of the Ahoada Omoku road dualisation project, Fubara expressed frustration over failed efforts to meet with state lawmakers, even though he had already met with federal legislators. He said he had sought reconciliation through Wike and Chief Anabraba but all his overtures had been ignored.

With his defection now complete, observers believe Fubara has executed a decisive political move that not only preserves his mandate but also reconfigures the balance of power in Rivers State
