Former Big Brother Naija star, Queen Mercy Atang, has expressed heartfelt gratitude after narrowly avoiding injury when the POP ceiling in her sitting room suddenly collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

The incident happened at about 6:00 a.m., while her younger sister and nanny were already awake in the sitting room, sewing. According to Queen, the situation turned frightening within seconds, as both women had to “literally run for their lives” when the ceiling gave way.

Queen revealed that she had only returned home around 4:00 a.m. and had convinced a friend to stay the night. However, the friend left shortly before the collapse occurred. Under normal circumstances, her sister usually sleeps in the sitting room after sewing through the night, but on this particular morning, she did not—an act Queen described as nothing short of divine intervention.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in her home. Just a few weeks earlier, the POP ceiling in her garage had also collapsed, raising serious concerns about the safety of the building.

Taking to social media, Queen shared the experience and credited God for sparing her family, writing: “God said, not this family.”

Despite the emotional shock from the incident, Queen stated that she is already making plans to move her family to a safer environment. At the same time, she remains focused on coordinating an upcoming Guinness World Record attempt for her protégé, Kosi Ani, which is scheduled to commence this Friday.

The incident adds to a growing list of POP ceiling collapses involving Nigerian celebrities in 2025, with actress Nkechi Blessing and content creator Zicsaloma also reporting similar experiences earlier in the year.

This is old school installation. Which is always dangerous in decking. Because the decking doesn't afford it more space and strength.

Modern pop is done with polystyrene sheet, it helps to reduce the weight, imagine doing this under decking and you still add chandelier lighting on top the pop

This is expected since every Tom and Jerry is now a POP installer. Honestly, I am not even a fan of POP ceilings, but trust Nigerians to jump on the bandwagon. And since it is more expensive than PVC, copy cats would choose it over PVC as a way of showing off.

Ordinarily PVC should potentially be a serious alternative but quality and variety is seriously lacking here in this country.

The fact is that home decor and interior design industry is a sellers market. Importers and merchants and not architects, craftsmen and decorators dictate what is available locally and this in my opinion is a big let down.

It is customization, variety and artistry that drives people to instal gypsum ceilings.

Many reasons might caused it one of it is not giving work to those that knows the job well by looking for cheap labour.some client can buy millions of naira materials to pay for workmanship na wahala

It's a Nigerian thing, in fact to pay workmanship na war.
Some go even send phones and laptops from yanki to come fix for Nigeria because of price.

There are asbestos that are designed just like POP these days.

What exactly is good about PVC?

Let's kukuma return to asbestos ceiling.

It appears to be the holy grail in terms of heat insolation, sound insulation, weather resistance and safety.
Just that our artisans have somehow decided not to be creative with it.

Gypsum board is best in my opinion...
