Price Of Rice From 2015 - 2025 by samstandard(op): 6:53am On Dec 21, 2025
In Nigeria, the price of rice has always followed an upward trend — especially during the Christmas season.

Every year, as demand increases during the festive period, the price of a bag of rice rises sharply. What many Nigerians see each December is not sudden; it’s part of a long-standing pattern driven by high demand, inflation, transport costs, and policy shifts.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how the price of a 50kg bag of rice has increased over the years:
2015 — ~₦10,000
2016 — ~₦13,000
2017 — ~₦16,000
2018 — ~₦18,500
2019 — ~₦19,500
2020 — ~₦26,000
2021 — ~₦30,000
2022 — ~₦35,000
2023 — ~₦50,000
2024 — ~₦85,000–₦120,000
2025 — ~₦60,000– 80,000

But a closer look at the price trend shows that in this year (2025), the price went down.

This hasn't happened in a long long time.

Is this Tinubu effect or what?

Any John Doe can throw open the borders and grant waivers to cronies to import cheap rice from Thailand. The harder task would have been to to come up with policies that would encourage indigenous rice production. He simply chose the easy and lazy approach, just as they did with security by negotiating with bandits.

Except you’re buying at an expensive elite market, there is no N80k rice again. A bag of rice is generally at an average cost of N55k today.

Which brand of rice is 55k? Big bull? Mango? Caprice? Mama africa? Which one exactly

Those saying things have come down are either ignorant or evil

Tinubu took rice to over 100k from 50k and now 85k. What exactly is the cumulative effect of his policy on food affordability?

Read the OP and stop being lazy. The price of an average bag of rice when Tinubu took over is there. Now, do the comparison yourself and tell us your observation.

Oops! It’s no longer about the average price of rice that ordinary Nigerians can afford but about Mango, Apple, and Pineapple rice, right? Dude, just listen to yourself. Must you be sad over everything?

A bag of rice was N50 averagely in 2023 when Tinubu took over. Minimum wage was N30,000 at that time. Today, a bag of rice is averagely N55k irrespective of Mango, Apple and Peanut rice despite minimum wage going up to N70,000. You should commend the government and not be sad. Stop getting sad over positive news, it won’t make Peter Obi president in 2027.

Buhari tripled the price (3x)
Tinubu took it to 8x
Salaries are yet to increase 3x much less 8x

Answer the first question, what brand of rice is 55k?

So according to you standard of living is better today than when tinubu took over?
But the tinubu in his speeches acknowledges thar Nigerians are going through pains and hard times because of his policies.
So who should we believe, tinubu or his asslickers.

Point of correction, am not very passionate about who is the president, and not loyal to any politician the way you guys asslick your political gods

Buhari that chooses your part ended up with anchor borrowers money and printing of 20trillion out of way and mean cap to give to your brothers up north but they squandered it by marrying many wives and used the remaining to buy guns, the consequence of which we suffer today through insecurity and inflation

This is no longer politics, but hatred and mischief. At the beginning of his administration, President Tinubu encouraged local production of rice and other staple foods. What did local farmers do? They hoarded their products and hiked prices, making Nigerians pay through the nose. The government attempted to control prices, but blackmailers took to social media and accused the government of stifling farmers from a particular region.
I live in Abuja, and around August 2024, Consumer Protection Commission officials visited Sahad Stores and Wuse Market in an attempt to regulate prices. They were fiercely criticised, and had to shelve the idea, allowing food prices to continue skyrocketing. The government eventually partially opened some borders to import food at cheaper prices.
If it is it you, what would you have done differently? You should also put insecurities into your options.

Price of rice was above 60k in 2023 when Tinubu became president, today the average price is 50k, you can even get quality foreign rice in some part of Lagos at 47k but you are here painting a different picture.

If your idea is for Nigerians to suffer so people can consider your Peter Obi, I assure you that God will reject it

Dishonesty! You removed subsidy and devalued the currency at the same time, thereby skyrocketing the prices of all goods and services, including transportation costs and costs of farming inputs. But somehow, you expected farmers and supermarket owners to maintain similar prices prior to your ill-timed policies. Even construction costs for already awarded road projects increased and they had to undergo contract variation. The Thailand and U.S rice he is importing today are only cheaper because of a deliberate policy of support and subsidies from their nation's government over a long period of time. All investors who invested in rice mills are counting their losses. What Nigerian sector is currently doing well today with government support and what is our competitive export advantage? Even Dangote Refinery is being sabotaged with fuel imports due to their vested interests in Malta Refineries. These importation policies are good for short-term optics but it will cost us in the long-run, just like the policy of negotiating with bandits up North to gloat about "peace" while the "repentant" bandits migrate down South.

You're either ignorant or pretentious, else you would have known that the value (purchasing power) of 30,000 naira minimum wage in 2023 is almost 4 times bigger than the 70,000 naira minimum wage today.
