Fitch Raises Outlook On Lagos To Positive by 4Play(m): 9:33pm On Feb 27, 2013
Fitch Ratings raised its outlook on Nigeria’s Lagos state to positive from stable, citing “improving debt management” and moves toward a balanced budget by 2015.

Increasingly bonds with “fixed repayment schedules, longer maturities and monthly provisions into the debt reserves fund, are replacing the traditional concentration of short-term bank loans” for the state that includes the country’s commercial capital, Fitch said today in an e-mailed statement. “Fitch views this as a sign of the state’s improving debt management.”

Lagos, led by Governor Babatunde Fashola, sold 80 billion naira ($505 million) of debt in November, its third and biggest issue in six years, to fund developments including an urban rail system that needs about $1 billion to complete. The seven-year notes were priced with a 14.5 percent coupon.

With an estimated population of 20 million, Lagos is the top contributor to the economy out of Nigeria’s 36 states and may grow 10 percent this year, according to Fitch. Tax contributions to revenue may reach 80 percent in 2015 from 70 percent due to improved collection.

Good development. Progress made in Lagos is progress made by Nigeria. I commend the governor for taking steps to reduce the debt burden of the state.

The country has seen far more progress in the last 2 to 3yrs compared to the period between 1999 and 2010/2009. States in the north hardly get mentioned in terms of infrastructural and economic development but tremendous progress is taking place in non-Boko Haram infested northern states.

Therefore, our democracy is working and delivering. If we continue this way, in the next 15 to 20yrs, Nigeria would challenge world powers

Finance Ministry has denied him $600m loan.

The credit for this rating should go to Okonjo Iweala
for prudent management of the country's loan portfolio.

Ok! And the nigerian economy is growing at a pace of 6 to 7%, foreign reserve in almost at the 50 mark, nigeria now owes lesser debt than south africa and egypt. Also nigeria is projected by moddy's to be africa's leading economy by 2018. So to all those swonning over fashola, above are the achievements of this presidency, and i'll like to know which is harder, running a state or federal economy?

Nigeria is increasingly looking like a developed economy with with a growing economy hub in lagos which is seperated from the country's capital in abuja(which performs administrative duties). These are some of the characteristics of a developed economy

Some people's brain are so warped and deluded that mere acknowledgement to great work being done by govt. are turned to the side. Fashola, wether we like it or not is doing a great job and his economic policies and developmental strides should be commended. We should not be apolitical to every issue and critical where commendation is required. Lagos is a sub-sect of Nigeria, therefore Nigeria's economic outlook is equally positive.

You see the hypocricy we talk about on nairaland.
A thread like this one will hurriedly make the homepage
while Okonjo-Iweala's factual reply to Ezekwezile's allegation of a depleting external reserve keep crawling in the politics zone.

However, Nigeria's economy in it's entirety is wearing a possitive outlook.
Inflation rate has dropped to a single digit 9%. Some of us realised quite early that Liar
Muhammed raising alarm about a collapsing Nigeria's economy was the usual deceptive gibberish
opposition feed gullible Nigerians with.
The managers of Nigeria's economy are doing a great job
beginning from GEJ, Okonjo Iweala, Sanusi, Aganga etc

Lest I forget, Kudos to Fashola too in his capacity as the governor of Nigeria's economic hub.

This should not be accepted by Nigerians, in as much as I empathise with our unemployed Nigerian youth,I will never consent to the idea of giving them monthly allowances. This is another way billions of naira will be wasted/embezzled. The true "unemployed" will never get the money while "the almighty/ well connected " individuals will relax and be enjoying the money from the comfort of their sitting rooms. We have seen such in this country before. I will however suggest getting the unemployed engaged in one form of job or the other before we talk of giving them allowances.

WOW, ignorance is not a good thing. Guys/Gals relax. An issuer usually gets rated (Fitch is one, so is S&P and Moodys), so Im assuming as Lagos has issued bonds to finance among other things Eko City, they need to get regular ratings and outlooks, which is what this is. So that those that invested in the bond know the financial well being and forecast of their bond issuer (here Lagos state) so as to ascertain among other things if they get their investment back and also to price the bond in the secondary market.

Though Im not a big fan of Eko City for certain reasons, you must give the Gov Fashola props for his fiscal spending and budgeting. Wish the other govs would take note. Actually wish the Fed Gov would take note.

PS
Before someone replys that Eko is totally Private Funded, I know that but the State will also need to finance certain infrastructural issues, such electricty link, water, sewage and possible insuarnce coverage.
