Power Outage Temporary, Supply To Return In 48 Hours – Adelabu by nairalanda1(op): 2:05am On Dec 24, 2025
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be restored within 24 to 48 hours, following a recent dip in power availability triggered by a temporary shortfall in generation.

He said efforts were already underway to stabilise the grid and return supply to normal levels nationwide.

PUNCH Online reports that the drop in power supply followed an explosion on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline, compounded by acts of vandalism on critical gas infrastructure, which disrupted gas supply to several thermal power plants across the country.

The Minister’s assurance comes in response to a statement by the National Independent System Operator, which informed the public and power sector stakeholders that it is closely monitoring ongoing repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited

NISO confirmed that the pipeline explosion resulted in a significant reduction in electricity generation nationwide.

According to NISO, several gas-fired power stations recorded reduced output following the incident, leading to a drop in available generation capacity on the national grid and a consequent shortfall in electricity supply to consumers.

The System Operator, however, noted that it has received assurances from NGPTC that restoration works on the vandalised pipeline are nearing completion and that full operations are expected to resume within 24 to 48 hours.

In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu acknowledged the inconveniences currently being experienced by households and businesses.

The statement read, “The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be rapidly restored following the recent decline caused by a temporary shortfall in power supply. The situation is expected to be resolved within the next 24 to 48 hours.”

He emphasised that the disruption is temporary and directly linked to acute gas supply constraints affecting several thermal power generation stations.

The minister reiterated these assurances during a meeting held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in Abuja, with key power sector stakeholders, including NISO, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the Ministry of Power, Power Generation Companies, and Power Distribution Companies.

Given the increased electricity demand during the Yuletide season, he stressed the urgency of restoring gas supply and ramping up energy generation.

At the meeting, stakeholders confirmed that repairs to the vandalised pipelines would be completed within 24 to 48 hours, enabling the resumption of gas supply.

The minister subsequently directed all relevant agencies to intensify their efforts to ensure the timeline is strictly adhered to.

Preliminary investigations, according to the minister, have established that the gas supply shortage was caused by the ELP explosion and acts of vandalism on gas pipelines in the Niger Delta region.

These incidents significantly reduced the volume of gas required to power key electricity plants, resulting in a sharp decline in overall generation on the national grid.

While acknowledging the impact of the power disruption on businesses and households, Adelabu assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving the issue swiftly.

“We understand the frustration this has caused Nigerians. However, we wish to assure the public that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Power, is working around the clock to address the situation with utmost urgency,” he said.

He expressed confidence that a marked improvement in gas supply and power generation would be achieved within the next 24 to 48 hours, with a gradual return to normal generation levels thereafter.

The minister further stated that the Federal Government is treating the incident with utmost seriousness, noting that beyond immediate restoration efforts, long-term measures are being accelerated to diversify the nation’s energy mix, strengthen grid resilience, and deploy advanced surveillance technologies to safeguard critical infrastructure.

He appealed to the public for patience and understanding during the temporary disruption and urged communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around power and gas facilities to security agencies, stressing that the protection of national infrastructure is a shared responsibility.

Adelabu also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to delivering stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity to power homes, industries, and the broader economy, assuring Nigerians that the temporary setback would not derail this objective.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Independent System Operator has said it is closely monitoring ongoing repair works on the Escravos–Lagos Gas Pipeline following a recent explosion that disrupted gas supply to power plants.

In a statement signed by its management, NISO explained that the incident, which occurred on the pipeline operated by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, led to a significant drop in electricity generation nationwide.

The operator noted that several gas-fired power stations recorded low output after the explosion, reducing available generation capacity on the national grid and resulting in a shortfall in electricity supply to customers.

NISO added that it is in close contact with NGPTC and has been assured that repairs on the vandalised pipeline are nearing completion.

According to the system operator, the pipeline is expected to become fully operational within the next 24 to 48 hours, enabling affected power plants to resume operations and restore full electricity supply across the country.

Preliminary investigations, according to the minister, have established that the gas supply shortage was caused by the ELP explosion and acts of vandalism on gas pipelines in the Niger Delta region.

Why are we like this?

Some people just like seeing their fellow humans suffer

To what end is the vandalisation of gas pipelines when it is clearly obvious that it can not be containerized.

Now that petrol availability is not a cause for concern, the enemies of the people have focused their gaze on the gas pipelines.

Oh, was it supposed to be permanent or what news is this? Step up the game and do same for transformers that blow up. News about power outage should be before the outage, otherwise it's not newsworthy. One day, we must get to the stage where there's backup.

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

To what end is the high taxes paid to Tinubu and his APC government?

Now that he has saved $84 billion from subsidy removal and hiked petrol price instead of crashing it as promised, do you know what he is doing with the money if he can’t secure gas pipelines huh

Do you think he is stealing all the money to bribe politicians into APC and buy votes for his reelection, as a prelude to a 3rd term agenda of life president like Biya in Cameroon?

Deltafirstson:
Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.

In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.

Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.

Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.

At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.

However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.

Petrol should never cost more than N70 per litre, says APC

January 19, 2015

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as mere tokenism the reduction of petrol price from N97 to N87 per litre, saying the petroleum product ordinarily should sell for N70.

On Sunday, the federal government announced the reduction of petrol price, citing the fall of global crude oil price.

But the APC through Lai Mohammed, its spokesman, on Monday accused the government of making a show out of deceit, saying “a 10.3 per cent slash in the price of petrol was a mere tokenism at a time the price of crude oil has crashed by about 60 per cent”.

It argued that the pump price of a litre of petrol should not be more than 70 Naira, alleging that at N87 per litre, the government was forcing Nigerians to subsidise the massive corruption in the oil sector by N17 for every litre of fuel.

Buhari’ll reduce petrol to N40/L —David-West

FORMER Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Prof. Tamunoemi David-West, said that Nigerians should expect sharp drop in petrol price from the current N87 to about N40 per litre, saying, “the president-elect, Gen. Mohammed Buhari, will reduce the fuel pump price to N40 per litre.”

As clueless as this Minister can be, he is telling over 200MNigerians that his useless ministry relies on a power source, without any alternative to turn to in the event it fails? Shame!
A serious ministry should have by now develop an alternative source of power that could temporary provide power to Nigerians whenever the disgraced national grid fails.

Strange enough we have been having light constantly , I have been hearing complaints for about 3 days now about electricity, the only difference is they now take it between 7 and 10pm and be flashing constantly.

Our church member who is under one 11kva around had to come and put Christmas croaker fish in freezer. No light at all at her end.

This is not a good period not to have light

Our 20hours plus is still constant.

The problem with Nigerian government is that we don't have a plan B,
They believer every Nigerian plan B is generator or inverter,
If Nigeria has a nuclear plant or another already supplied gas plant wiring in case something happens, they can switch over to
