Traders Lament Low Patronage Of Poultry, Foodstuffs In Abuja by iwaeda(op): 7:53am On Dec 24, 2025
Chicken and foodstuff traders have lamented low patronage a day before this year’s Christmas festivities.

Some traders interviewed by Abuja Metro linked the situation to the delay in December salary payments, while others pointed to the general economic situation in the country.

Ahmad Iliya, a poultry trader at the Wuse Market, who was seen displaying turkeys yesterday, said the usual high patronage during such festivity had dropped drastically compared to the same period last year.

He said, “I have turkeys in the large category for N80,000 to N150,000, with smaller sizes available for as low as N30,000. But as of this afternoon (yesterday), I have sold only three out of the birds I brought.”

Iliya noted the high cost of maintenance: “I received supplies about a week ago from Katsina, Kano and Kaduna states, and they consume an average of N50,000 in feed every day.

Most people I interact with are complaining about the lack of December salary. I don’t know what will happen between now and tomorrow, but I pray for better sales before the period elapses.”

A resident, Peter Iyke, who was seen boarding a vehicle near the market, said he had yet to do any shopping as of Tuesday.

He said, “The prices of some food items have dropped compared to last year, but that hasn’t taken effect on chicken prices which remain high. We hope to celebrate with joy no matter the situation or the hardship.”

In Kubwa, a chicken farmer based in Suleja, Niger State, Gbenga Dele, came with his broilers expecting a better market in the FCT.

Assisted by his wife and son, Dele parked his vehicle under a pedestrian bridge on the expressway to target passersby and provide shade for his birds.

Expressing his frustration to Abuja Metro, Dele said, “Sincerely speaking, I am short of words regarding this year’s Christmas market. You would be surprised if I tell you what I spent to raise these birds and what people are offering for them. In a good market, a chicken of this size will cost N20,000.

“But people are offering N10,000 or even less. I haven’t sold any since I arrived this morning. The birds are nine weeks old now, and I am ready to sell at N12,000 – well below my initial target of N15,000.”

Dele noted that the dull market affected more than just civil servants as business owners and artisans were also feeling the pinch.

Almustafa Imam, a foodstuff trader at the Kubwa Main Market, confirmed that the drop in patronage affected all sectors.

He said, “Previously, during Christmas shopping, the majority of our customers bought whole bags. Now, even those who buy in bulk are scarce. The situation has affected all traders, including those of us selling foodstuff.”

Seriously I don't know what and why that wicked soul is still talking about hell bent on implementing his imagined multiple tax laws (not ours).

He removed subsidy on

Petrol (fuel)

causing petrol and transport care price on air, sea, land, rail jump above 500%! Fuel price from 180 to 1000+, transport care up, air ticket flight cost astronomical, completely out of reach.

Electricity

Yet light is not steady. 1000 naira is now only 4.2 units!

Education
School feels now very expensive, students now turning to NELFUND

WHY is he still asking for tax

This is not the priority now
This is just like taxing completely empty pockets (many pockets now are empty as confirmed from this topic of discussion).

What you should focus now on is making the governance more transparent and accountable,
Curtailing the hydra headed monstrous corruption.
Solving the insecurity puzzle.

And most importantly creating an enabling environment to make wealth , create an atmosphere of enterprise and abundance, make the human resources productive, make all the sectors of the economy esp manufacturing sector productive.

Then we can now starting talking about this kind of taxation that obtains in advanced countries, you are proposing.

Not at this point where you can't guarantee security of lives and property, 24h electricity, pipeborne water supply, good roads network, affordable transportation e.t.c

Let them go and eat their live stocks at home. Our greediness will one day bring down our country if we don't caution ourselves.

Christmas is a season of love but our traders will always make it a season of agony. Imagine selling a chicken for 30-45K, this are normal chicken of 10-15K but because it is Christmas season, everyone want to cash out.

Electricity is subsidsied for the majority, as is education.

As for tax, considering our tax to gdp is 13.8%...lower than NIger Republic, and considering oil prices are scheduled to keep falling for the next several years, and considering no diversificaiton of the economy(the fault of tinubu, and buhari since they promised it), it's either tax, or government would borrow far far more than they are dreaming of right now.

The scary thing for next year is that if we fight corruption, we still have a very scanty budget that can give every nigerian less than 300000 for the year.

MODIFED

Despite me saying that

1.It is the fault of tinubu and buhari that they haven't diversifed our economy

and

2. Our tax to gdp is low, which is itself an indictment of the government

Some chap called obiekunle01 has decided to use abusive language on me.

My post is definetly not excusing the government, unless you think that saying that the government has failed in its responsibility to raise money for the treasury or to even make our economy productive enough to raise money for our treasury is defending the government...which is in itself a rddiculous idea

I seem to find that some people cannot think before they speak apparently, or read properly.

The problem with Nigeria has always been our resource dependent economy, and thus the tragedy of this APC government is the failure in ten years to reverse that. Instead tinubu and buhari loyalists engage in blaming each other.

And it has been a cold reality that we do not earn enough from tax. Organisations like PwC and the World Bank have repeatedly said that, plus our tax to gdp is markedly low...which is a big part of the reason why we always borrow, even in times of plenty. Yet somehow pointing that out means I am a tinubu supporter. Are PwC and the World Bank made up of APC supporters too?

And it is also a statement of fact that only Band A people pay above market price, and the majority of customers of the discos are on subsidised prices. A statement that has been repeated many times over the years even. Yet, repeating that truth means I am an APC supporter?

And then education...is subsidised. NELFUND, which is a waste of time in my opinion...was brought in to help poor students via a loan...which is a trap. Yet, for stating the truth, I am an APC supporter.

Is the sign of opposing this government being that we must lie like the average government supporter? Does that not make us the same as the APC Propaganda kompanie on this site.?

Anyway, there is popularity and there is truth. I stand for truth, not for lies. Facts, my friends, do not respect your feelings. Whatever you think of me, or not, I will post the truth and I don't care if you abuse me or not.

And Nigeria needs to be free from resource dependency.

I am dissapointed in Obiekunle01. But then again, no one is perfect. cheesy

Well it costs money to buy feed, and to provide good enough housing for the chickens, as well as drugs, and so forth.

Also, when one starts breeding chickens for Xmas, be prepared to lose some of the chicks from the word go...that loss must be covered financially too

That's why prices are high. Everyone is operating under tinubu economy after all.

You mean they should sell at loss? Are you insane. Because even the current price only has small markup for profit. The cursed politicians that cursed people like you support destroy Nigeria everyday while enriching themselves, but accursed people like you put the blame on innocent people who are only trying to survive.

On the 6th of December, someone in my neighborhood here in Abuja had chickens for sale.

She assumed that because it was December, prices would skyrocket.

I asked how much per chicken. She said ₦20,000 fixed for one chicken.

If I wanted her to keep it till Christmas Day, I would add ₦4,000 for feed.
With full confidence and shakara.

Total: ₦24,000 non negotiable

As a farmer’s child, I say OK.

Fast forward to the Christmas period now.
The same size of chicken is now selling in the market for ₦13,000 each.

Now she’s the one chasing me up and down because chicken prices have dropped 😂

After feeding the chickens from December 6th to December 24th, she suddenly says the price is “negotiable.”

The same person that was doing shakara at ₦24k is now asking me to pay ₦13k 😂

Reality has entered. Greed showed itself.

After Christmas and New Year, we’ll buy again at ₦8k.
