Police Deploy 1,000 Officers Across Borno After Mosque Bomb Blast by buzmanjohn(op): 8:54am On Dec 25, 2025
The Borno State Police Command has deployed over 1,000 officers across major streets, flashpoints and churches as Christians celebrate Christmas, following a bomb blast that killed five people and injured 35 others at a mosque on Wednesday evening.

PUNCH Online had reported that the blast occurred around 6pm when worshippers had gathered at the Al-Adum Mosque for prayers in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent on Thursday morning, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, said that although security measures were already in place, Wednesday’s incident necessitated heightened security arrangements.

Daso said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would dominate all worship centres and recreational facilities, while urging residents to go about their lawful activities.

He said, “There will be full domination of security personnel at churches, recreational centres, and strategic locations where people are massively going to. We are on standby.

“It is a joint operation between the police and all emergency and security response teams. The command has deployed over 1,000 personnel within Maiduguri.”

He emphasised that, “Though there were earlier security arrangements, however, with what happened yesterday, we are making it more intense.”

The Police Public Relations Officer called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement.

“We call on members of the public to go about their lawful business. But they should be very mindful and careful of their surroundings and use the designated emergency response number.

“Any suspicious person they see around them should be immediately reported,” he said.

Daso also stated that individuals would be screened before gaining access to worship centres, including churches and mosques.

“In terms of clearance, any individual going to churches must be properly scanned. And the same thing too for the mosque,” he said.

PUNCH had earlier reported that the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, condemned the bomb attack on the mosque, describing it as inhumane and barbaric.

Zulum, in a statement issued on Wednesday night by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, called for increased vigilance and heightened security measures, particularly at places of worship during the festive period.

The governor said, “I am deeply saddened by the Gamboru mosque suicide attack which occurred on Wednesday evening when worshippers were performing Maghrib prayer, killing 5 people and injuring 35 others. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric and inhumane.”

He added, “Attacking a place of worship is a desecration of the sanctity of the mosque at a time when Muslim faithful are performing acts of worship.

“I wish to express my condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the attack and pray for the repose of their souls, and for the speedy recovery of those injured,” he stated.

The governor assured residents that adequate measures had been taken to forestall any security breach during the festive period and beyond.

...... Nigerian security men are nincompoops always applying medics after death, to do the simple preventive measures is like cracking the palm kernel with a rubber mallet to them, only perfect in extorting and intimidating civilians

But I often wonder why Muslims don't condemn these bastardized sects.

They might say something like: any group of people who kills..... But they never mention the names of the groups while condemning them

Why are they not proactive?
Must people die first before they deploy officer's and spring into action?
There should have been a proactive security measures across the country for the yuletide season.

LOL...they do.

Bac in 2014, SLS , the then emir of Kano, now emir again, gave a speech where he blasted Boko Haram well well. He even went as far as calling on people to take up arms and defend themselves against Boko. That was on 17th november. On 28 November, Boko attacked the Kano central mosque in response

Vide BBC

The Emir said people should not be afraid of the militants and should prepare to defend themselves.

"These terrorists slaughter our boys and abduct our girls to force them into slavery," he said.

People should not sit idle and say prayer is the only solution. People should be made aware of the importance of being in a state of preparedness and make sure they acquire what they need to protect themselves. We should be ready to give our lives.

That's just one instance. What about the clerics, celebrities, politicians etc.

I just feel like they hide behind a 'general descriptive term' to call them out

It is the same reason why christian leaders have never called out unknown gunmen, corrupt politicans that happen to be christian since 1999, and cults as well as violent gangs in the south. And millitants.

Nigerians prefer to call out evil that does not benefit them.

I don't agree with ur point. Even Christians are very quick to criticize even their priests if they fell they have strayed. That said, even on this forum, Christians continually show their hatred for unknown gunmen, cultists and other forms of gangs.

So where was all these police sudden activates since?

Surprisingly seen police arresting bandits and kidnappers for the past few days since the VIP escort ban was in place.

This is a good number of police deployed at once very commendable indeed.

I still stand by my point. Nigerian religious leaders don't attack evil when it benefits their side. The side they represent.

Because they want to enjoy, and they don't want to die.

Like see SLS. When he went against the grain and attacked the evil on his side, he got a visit. You know how that ended.

Most Nigerians are not courageous people. They would chant slogans rather than challenge sin. Including me
