When last did you eat this? It is a pity that many Nigerians can no longer afford foods that are meant to be affordable.

I remember the lyrics of late Christopher Wallace aka Notorious B.I.G. in his 1994 single titled 'Juicy'. In the song, Wallace said that he used to eat sardines for dinner way back when he was broke.

Some years back, former Manchester United's striker, Romelu Lukaku from Belgium said in an interview that he and his mum used to feed on bread and milk when they were poor. Imagine!

Now can the average Nigerian comfortably afford common foods like sardines, bread and milk for dinner? When there is inflation and the minimum wage is $47 per month?

Average Nigerians spend the larger part of their income on basic things like food. Food is one of the basic needs of man. It is compulsory for survival. It is more important than education, or any other thing.

I remember the line from Biggie's song...

I think fela hit it right when he said Nigerians are suffering and smiling.

The crazy thing about our situation is that Nigerians have been held in shakles by our leaders for soooooooo long that they have become used to poverty.

Many Nigerians have accepted poverty and gotten used to it that even bringing them out of it is even another task. It's like the story of Mr tortoise that fell into a hole of excrement and stayed there for days and became so comfortable that when help finally came he refused to come out claiming the place was comfortable.

Just a few decades back it might not have been all that rosy but Nigerians still lived a decent life. Now there isn't even a middle class anymore. Majority of people are living in poverty and the weird thing is they don't even know it.

Suffering and smiling. It's a pity for a country that has soooooooo much potential!

The reason some people haven't eaten it for long is not because of poverty or the cost. It is because there are many better alternatives. A smoked Titus or mackerel for instance is more expensive, but I still prefer it to this canned sardines.

Any food in can is known to have much sodium contents. Sodium is not too good for people with high blood pressure and hypertension.

Nothing special about this any more. The preservatives used in preserving some of these things we consume are some of the culprits for the high rate of cancer in our society these days. It's better to eat fresh things...

My younger sister's worst food.

Even if you offer her 1million she won't eat it, the smell irritates her.

Nigerians are(maybe) irredeemable. While the OP is bringing up a perspective on the state of things in the country, many are complaining about the taste and their dislike for sardines. And many of these people most likely are brandishing one degree or the other, and yet they lack critical reasoning. What a people!

I don't understand. Is sardines a full course dinner? Sardines is normally added to indomie as a matter of choice. It isn't a necessity and a great number of Nigerians can still afford it but they just don't buy it. I for one, don't really like it. It has a sort of metallic taste that tends to dominate dishes.

If you want to talk about things low income Nigerian can't afford anymore, talk about Pringles, Peak milk and Bournvita in tins, sharwama, grilled catfish, Golden morn and all.

Still though, anyone who used to buy these can still buy them just that they have fallen lower in orders of preference.

About three weeks ago. I will eat it again by next week. It’s fun when your company buys and prepares it every morning.
