Things are happening!!! May my children never bring shame to me, may the sins of my father and forefathers never be brought upon me as a judgement, may my sins not be heaped on my children and may the sins of my children be made accountable to them alone... Every Mallam to his kettle...

First of all, this is illegal nonsense and should not be encouraged. Second, I hope the boy who pushed the kids in the river has been charged and maybe even arrested, depending on the circumstances. 🥱🥱

The family that is supposedly being banished could actually sue the community for this. I don't know why in 2025, Nigerian communities still cling to barbarian practices. 🥱🥱

Hmmm
This is sad and do not know what to really say .
My people would say ‘ Eni bi mo Oran Lo n pon ‘ loosely translated as ‘ whoever gives birth to an evil child must carry such child on their back’.
But then the parents didn’t send the child message to push people into river .
I think the authorities should come to their aid and resettle them elsewhere because from the look of things they don’t seem to have the capability to get a new abode as soon as possible.

That said, stuff like this still happen because people do not believe in the country’s justice system. A working society is for the benefit of everyone .

PS: I abhor jungle justice because of an experience I suffered in primary school .
Over 25 years ago, I was trying to fetch drinking water from a reservoir meant for drinking water in the class . One of my classmates came to knock/ interrupt me while drinking water and I started chasing after him. Lo and behold, he tripped over one of our classmates’ leg. He fell and injured his tongue . He bled profusely and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Guess what, the proprietor of my school called an emergency assembly and I was unjustly flogged like a thief that day. I was not even up to 10.
Unfortunately, I didn’t report this incident to my parents.
Over 25 years later, I still carry the burden of this injustice with me and typing this still makes me teary .

What century and exact year are we in again?

This reminds me of when Okonkwo was banished from his village Umuofia for seven years after he accidentally killed a clansman, Ezeudu's son, during a funeral gun salute in Chapter 13 of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, a crime against the earth goddess requiring exile to his mother's village, Mbanta, for purification.

Chinua Achebe, may you continue to RIP

Maybe the parents failed to restrain their kid...some parents can be nonchalant towards their wards repeated bad behavior. This is much better than lynching them...though, I wonder if the village has the right to banish anyone from their community.

If the child is a minor there isn't much anyone can do about that. I don't know if Nigeria has facilities for the trial and rehabilitation of deviant minors. Lastly, if your kid is known for causing trouble and you failed to address and curtail his excesses. One day you may be held responsible for his escapades.

One question.

Where will they go after they banish them?

Move to another community in Anambra, move to another state in the South East, or roam around in other regions of the country?

How can you banish people in big 2025 and think you are civilized and human!

What gives you the notion that a minor cannot be processed by the Law in Nigeria, where a 7-year-old can be prosecuted? undecided

2. If it has the laws, it should have the facilities, or begin now putting them in place. There is no reason why crimes committed by minors should be disregarded or ignored. 🥱🥱🥱

3. A crime is a crime regardless of who commits it. Also, no community has the right to banish individuals in such a situation. 🥱🥱

As far as I'm concerned, it is better than killing the boy on retaliation. Since, the parents couldn't discipline their son properly and the boy grow up not to know boundaries between play and crime, then let them share the punishment.
If we enact and practice this kind of law for a decade, our society will become same back.

I see the reason to commend that community

What is Barbarian about this? ...you see Barbarism in the penalty but not the act. If the parents raised their son right there was no need for this. Police and prison were never part of African culture ... what's wrong with practicing our own? It's called accountability.... not fit to live amongst others ....banishment. I still strongly believe the murderer should've been forced to eat at least one bowl of heaping hot peppers before being banished.
