They All Slept But Nobody Woke Up - The Mystery Of Lake Nyos by WriterX(op): 8:53am On Dec 31, 2025
Lake Nyos — The Night the Lake Became Death

On 21 August 1986, something eerily silent — yet overwhelmingly deadly — unfolded on the shores of Lake Nyos

(The shores of Lake Nyos are located in north-west Cameroon, in Africa.)

In the tropical heat of late evening, the lake — peaceful and still for centuries — suddenly turned into one of the most baffling and chilling natural disasters in recorded history.

Scientists now call it a limnic eruption — a rare and almost unheard-of phenomenon in which a lake releases enormous amounts of carbon dioxide gas without any typical volcanic eruption. But at the time, nobody knew what to expect.

The Unseen Killer

At around 9:00 pm, the lake lurched and let loose a massive cloud of carbon dioxide (CO₂) — estimates vary, but ranges from as much as 300,000 to 1.6 million tons of gas suddenly pouring out of the water.

This gas was invisible. It made no roaring sound like a volcanic blast — and yet, it was as lethal as any weapon of war.

Because CO₂ is heavier than air, the cloud didn’t rise and disappear— it crawled across the surface, sinking into valleys and low ground, displacing all oxygen in its path. It carved a silent deadly plume stretching up to 25 km (16 miles) from the lake’s rim across the farmland and villages around it.

“Like the Aftermath of a Neutron Bomb”

When survivors finally emerged the next morning, the scene was horrifying.

Bodies lay motionless in mud-brick homes.

Livestock lay tangled with carts and fences, asphyxiated (suffocated) where they stood.

Even insects — the flies and beetles that usually swarm dead flesh — were dead.

Reporters at the scene described it as “like the aftermath of a neutron bomb” except nothing melted, nothing burned, just bodies everywhere.

There were no signs of struggle — no screams, no cries for help. People had died quietly in their sleep, instantly, trapped in sleep or the ordinary moments of an evening.

Eyewitness Testimony: Joseph Nkwain

One of the few people to survived the gas cloud was Joseph Nkwain, a farmer from the village of Subum. In later interviews, he recounted an experience that still chills researchers to this day:

“I could not speak. I became unconscious. I could not open my mouth because then I smelled something terrible…

I heard my daughter snoring in a very strange way, like she was in trouble…

…I collapsed and fell…

…I wanted to speak, but my breath would not come out…

…my daughter was already dead.”

His story was recorded by researchers and echoed in many survivor records — a reminder that this wasn’t just numbers on a page, but human lives trapped in what felt like a moment of suffocating silence.

Villages Engulfed: Nyos, Cha & Subum

Most of the victims came from close-lying villages such as Nyos, Cha, and Subum — all within the low-lying terrain below the volcanic lake.

Those on higher ground or out in the surrounding hills were among the few who escaped death.

To people sleeping in their houses that night, nothing sounded unusual — no alarms, no explosions, no earthquakes that anyone felt. Then a blanket of heavy, invisible air swept in and, within minutes, life simply was gone.

People laughed and talked and did all the things they usually did, said good nights and never woke up again.

Oh yeah, you are right @CodeTemplarr. it is so Lethal!
In my 2 decades of practice as a geoscientist, the story I have heard about it is still a puzzle. Knowing the geology of Nigeria alone and that of west African is not still enough.

Nature is indeed a puzzle and ultimately GOD is an unimaginable bunch of mysteries that cannot be unraveled

Can't we use this kind of gas in Sambisa forest?

Even though I know we would also be considering biodiversity and biodiversity preservation.

And there it is, the god plug. It's a mystery therefore god. Why can't a mystery just be a mystery, a puzzle to be solved, why does it need to be tied to a god? None of the the mysteries we've solved have ever produced any god behind it, why would this one be different?

It's also amazing how when something good happens people attribute it to God but when bad things occur suddenly their God is nowhere to be found. It is the work of the devil or enemies in the village.

I remember vividly well that early August morning when the news break. I was 7 years old back then. We had a neighbour whose entire family perished..There was a popular video of a girl, who slept in a neighbouring town only to return the next morning, to meet her entire family extinct..

Then there was the rumours from the common man..Lol Paul Biya had dropped a silent bomb into the lake, offering the people of Nyos as a sacrifice to extend his grip on the presidency. Lol He had been president for 4 years, so who knows if the incident actually prolonged his grip on power as rumoured. (sarcasm)
Re: They All Slept But Nobody Woke Up - The Mystery Of Lake Nyos by DomPerignon: 12:19pm On Dec 31, 2025
The lake was created after a volcanic eruption left a huge crater.

Heavy rainfall filled up the crater but since there was no disharge from the lake, Carbon dioxide pockets had accumulated over the years deep in the lake.

On that ill fated day, heavy rains had seen to a land slide along the lake's shore line and a huge rock boulder fell into the lake that disrupted the air pocket bringing it to the surface.

The prevailing wind then drove the carbon dioxide gas cloud towards the village.

Carbon dioxide being denser than oxygen, displaced the oxygen gas from the ground.

The frost bite markings on the bodies of the dead were caused by the cold gas that froze the bodies.

Its a painless death and is believed to even give a high.

That's why the sadists in the US don't want to switch to executing their condemned inmates with this cheap gas but will rather use a combination of chemicals that torture the condemned for over 15mins before death occurs.

Very sad, I recall the day we almost died from inhalation of carbon monoxide from our generator. We were watching a movie and then it started raining, so we took the generator and put it on the balcony without knowing that the wind was blowing the toxic smoke towards the window and into the room, all of a sudden I struggled to wake up and noticed that everyone in the room was deeply asleep and almost unconscious and my mind quickly connected the dots and I went out to put off the generator and opened the doors and windows by raining the curtains for oxygen to fill the room.

That was when I gradually started waking up everyone and they didn't believe me when I tried to explain to them that we all had lost consciousness and if I didn't wake up we would have made the news how a family of 7 had passed from generator fumes in the morning

didnt the scientists explain exactly what killed the villagers and how it happened?

Hmmmm ... why are they so sure the lake released the gas? ... and carbon dioxide but not carbon monoxide? Learned sometime ago about the Valley of Death where carbon monoxide would seep out of the earth and flow down the valley before sunup...killing everything in its path. Maybe same?

Thank God for scientistific discoveries because they would have tied the incident down to their gods being angry because one or two person did some evil that it would require cleasing with 100 human heads.

Same thing was happening years back when Nigerians didn't know that Generator fumes, which contains Carbon dioxide emissions kills.
There was a typical case in Aba where many people died in a Cyber Cafe in those days of Night browsing and the Generator used to power the place was placed inside the business center. The next morning the place was destroyed by angry citizens who believed that the owner of the business have used all of the dead for money rituals.

A big thank you to the Oyinbo people who opened our eyes if not we would still be living life some how.

Ya, during GEJ they tried it, but reaching the camp, all the terrorists were wearing gas mask, and Nigerian army was terrified.

The same oyibo people who have taught people like you to hate your ancestors and your history and to feel inferior?

Something like this happened in the same Cameroon some years back. According to our geography teacher, this one was volcanic eruption and it killed everyone including animals and insects. A young man going to see his parents in the village was the one that saw Bush rats on the road and picked it. He moved forward and saw another one, it was when he began to see dead birds that he became apprehensive that something terrible has happened. He had to move quickly into the village and saw so many dead body of villagers. Many of then were still outside taking fresh air when the volcanic erupted. The soots and ashes killed everyone. He quickly alerted government. They still have some dangerous volcanic mountain in cameroon till today.

Good.

I think you should also highlight the prevention method applied to prevent future occurrence like the installed 8 gas tube for degassing.

The lake is rated the second deadliest lake in the word.

Nice write up.

Then almost EVERY home in Nigeria will be affected cos God's justice I mean justice of the supernatural doesn't just end with who stole or did it. Enemies of naija are not all in power, it also includes everybody living in or outside Nigeria making lives in Nigeria difficult in any aspect. Be careful what you wish for, you just might be the principal child of someone who was an enemy of Nigeria.
