Yes. That's true. People might even decide to do a year of 20 months. It won't change anything. Unlike sunrise and sunset which herald the start of a day and night, we know not of a natural indicator for the solar month and year. But the lunar month which muslims adopt for the Islamic calendar is indicated by a new crescent. 3 Likes |

I believe it is significant due to the positioning of the earth. It means we are back to the starting position in our solar system. A journey that started exactly this time last year and took the Earth 365days to complete the revolution around the sun at a staggering speed of about 107,000Km/h..... OP, you're slightly "abnormal". Most people in the society use "logical-thinking" daily and use "critical-thinking" when challenges and conflicts happen. They revert back immediately it is resolved. Now, you are wired in the opposite direction; you use "critical-thinking" on a daily basis and revert to "logical-thinking" when society forces it on you. Then you revert back to your wiring. The reality? You will make outstanding achievements in life but it will be a lonely life of being misunderstood constantly. My advice? Even though I don't celebrate new year or make resolutions, there is indeed something like new year. A year strictly speaking is the time it takes the earth to move round the sun, it has a value of 365.25 days. It is not made up from thin year. Although different cultures and traditions mark the start of their new year at different points in the year based on the type of calendar they are using, there is indeed a cosmological base for a new year. A new year is the beginning of a new cycle of the earth round the sun. If I pick say May 31 and I wait precisely another 365 and a quarter day, on that very day the earth would begin a new cycle round the sun, surely I would be correct to celebrate a new year because that day marks the beginning of a new cycle of the earth round the sun based on the arbitrary point of reference, may 31, that I choose. This is why across the globe there are different days marked as new year. For most of the world it is Jan 1 as per the Gregorian calendar, for the Chinese, Ethiopians, Jews, Muslims, however it is a completely different day but there is always a new year. 11 Likes |

Honestly, Nairaland bots and mods are beginning to vex me. Do people pay money to get their posts to front page cus I would also like to pay. Cus I don't understand how I have made better posts often and often again, and yet they never make front page. I also made this same similar post of "WHAT'S NEW ABOUT THE MONTHS AND YEARS" we celebrate with better analysis and reasoning, yet it didn't make front page. Even your date of birthday is also illusion. The reason for day and night is to regulate time. As the day goes by you grow, you age, so for you to complete a full cycle there is a need to have a calendar to help us calculate the dates. So some of us know what you said but our understanding of life makes us to celebrate every new year because Bible recognises new year too. 2 Likes |
