6 dead, 4 rescued in Lagos boat mishap

LAGOS—At least six passengers have died and four others rescued following a boat mishap along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos.

The incident occurred, Tuesday evening, at approximately 8:35 pm involving a Savvy Marine passenger boat en route Ilashe Beach House. Rescue operations were ongoing at press time to locate any other victims.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the incident in a joint statement signed by NIWA Head of Public Affairs, Wuraola Alake, and LASWA Head of Corporate Affairs, Omowunmi Yussuff.

Upon receiving a distress alert, both agencies activated their Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, which coordinated closely with the Marine Police and other first responders.

“As of this report, four passengers have been rescued and are receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital. Sadly, six others were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to account for all persons involved,” the statement read.

Preliminary findings suggest the mishap may have been caused by a collision with a submerged object, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The authorities assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted and updates will be provided as more information emerges. LASWA and NIWA also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated their commitment to safety on Lagos Inland Waterways.

They emphasized strict adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with the “No Night Travel” rule, and advised the public to rely only on verified information from official sources.

apparently, the boat collided with a sandboat, and this was due to late travel. imagine plying the water at night, completely in the dark; no light? and the life jackets are merely there for aesthetic reasons. part of the dead were 3 sisters. why so careless with life?

Our government isn't serious, only fond of making noise. Life doesn't matter to them. How many times have we agitated for safety beefup in this sector? I can't believe this is still happening. The boats leave from one jetty to another while the passengers are often seen without a life jacket. What are those personnel manned there doing in enforcing the use of a life jacket ?

Arrest and prosecute the boat operators

Sanction the LASWA personnel who are more concerned with egunje than their duties

Family of the deceased should sue as well

Until there are punitive consequences this will continue

So Boat doesn't come with flog lights... And boat driver can speed cruising on the water in the dark of the night... And no safety jacket on passengers... And they cannot swim, no life jackets and yet they board the boat at night...

The country is a mess.
Safety of lives and properties no concern regulators and policy makers.
The people should have that at the back of their minds when they want to do anything.
Make arrangement for your own safety and protection.
I know u cannot insulate yourself totally from the anyhowness BUT u can still try, limit your exposure to risks- the reality is that the system is largely unsafe. So anything that your survival is not dependent on, just avoid it.
Even in your safe space, the fatality can still come o, but u increase the chance of misfortune when uexpose yoursef in a country where safety of lives is treated as an after-thought
