Political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has said that former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, will contest the presidency in 2027, but noted that he would withdraw his support if Obi agrees to run as a vice-presidential candidate.

Utomi made the comment on Thursday evening during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

Recall that Obi announced his formal defection from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress in Enugu on Wednesday.

At the event, the former presidential candidate, who placed third in the 2023 general election, polling about six million votes, said his move to the ADC marked the beginning of a journey to “rescue our country and set it on the path of proper socio-economic development.”

However, some supporters and critics, including the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, have questioned the move, raising concerns about the zoning of the party’s presidential candidacy, particularly with the membership of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the same party.

Speaking on the programme, Utomi ruled out a vice-presidential slot for Obi, saying he would “walk away” if the former Anambra State governor became a vice-presidential candidate.

“I can tell you that Peter Obi will contest for the presidency. The day he becomes somebody’s vice president, I walk away from his corner. I can tell you that for a fact,” he said.

Utomi also argued that age limits should be set for presidential candidates, capped at 70 years, saying many candidates viewed the office of the president as a “retirement home”, while criticising the administrations of former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu.

“Something important about this election to bear in mind is that the Nigerian presidency has become a retirement home where people go for the Nigerian state to pay their medical bills. It is not acceptable.

“They don’t have the fitness to run the country. The last one, and the current one, have essentially been government-in-absentia leaders.

“I, Pat Utomi, am insisting that I will canvass to the Nigerian people that nobody over the age of 70 should run for an executive position, whether it be governor or president,” he concluded.

History has shown VPs barely have any impact in the country affairs
So if Obi runs as VP, the focus should be on the quality of person running as president and if the person is promising with regards to the progress and prosperity of the country

It’s practically worthless to withdraw support from someone bound to lose at both instances!

Pat should know that, with or without his support, Peter's loss at the polls is guaranteed like the morning sun.

You guys just make assumptions then conclude on the assumptions. Your voices are louder than your actions. And when a person's voice is too loud he fails to hear others and save himself on time. Same mistake of 2023 is about to repeat next year.

If you don't know, the reason everyone seems to be on your case is because others are not as loud. Atiku was very professional about his defeat whereas Third Place Guy repeatedly claimed he won even when he couldn't defend himself in court. And you his supporters are some of the most unruly set of supporters ever, even worse than football fans, ever ready to insult anyone whose opinions seem to differ. With this kind of fanbase there's no way he'll win any election whether as VP or P.

The only region in the south that will accept an Atiku/Obi ticket against an incumbent president Tinubu is the South east. And to be honest, it is not surprising. Even when we fielded MKO vs Tofa, SE still voted against MKO. So, it’s really no big deal.

SW, SS and NC are fully in the bag for APC. NW will be divided and Atiku will take NE and SE. it’s a done deal for APC.

Better withdraw the support now, cos that's what Obi is planning to do. He cannot win any party primaries with Atiku on the ballot and he knows this. One wonders why he still went ahead to declare for the party.

It is quite clear now that he's agreed with Atiku to be his running mate.

2023 elections was one of the best elections after 1993 and Tinubu that wasn’t holding any government position won. He’ll win again in 2027..

Winning elections has never been Tinubu’s problem..

Running as VP is his only road to presidency and that is what he should've done in 2023 instead of allowing Tinubu to used him to divide PDP's vote. Moreover, he's still young compare to Atiku.

Sitting here and wondering what Utomi's support has done for Peter Obi. A man becomes wiser because experience takes over as his teacher. Utomi is sidelined by PO because Bulaba is looking at his pockets and bank accounts.

Some slow thinkers think the Aso rock is jittery because of Obi’s ADC move. Has he not always been a part of the ADC? Even the dumbest of politicians would have surmised and identified his move.

There is no other party for him to identify with. Why? He can’t win on his own on any party. And he has to contest to keep the fire on! He needs a bigger party than the LP. He needs big wigs and astute politicians to continue his political pedestal. Above all, he’s desperate so desperate for national power! So it’s a must he goes to the ADC. This an average APC leader knows! So his moves didn’t rattle them. They have pre planned all the scenarios for all his future alliances.

All I know is that ADC with whoever that’s on the ballot WILL commence the sailing but sinks in the middle of the sea!!
