Aside the government officials are using the money generated through agberos to flex, I see no reason why a state like Lagos will not have the best road network in the whole world. With huge amount generated daily through agbero, Lagos should be the best in terms of roads with street lights, free toilets at almost every bus stop but the money is not being used judiciously. That aside, the drivers complaining are the biggest criminals in the scheme of things. They wickedly hike their price and blame it on agbero. In my area, from my junction to the bus stop was #50 both Korope/Keke Napep before covid period. When the government ease the locked down and introduce social distancing, they add #50 naira since they can only carry two passengers. When everything returns back to normal, instead to bring the price down they hike it again to #150. Fast forward, when Jagaban came onboard, removed subsidy, they increased to #300. Around early 2025, the local government have to fix the road and vehicles are diverted to pass another road, because of the small diversion, they added another #100 and make it #400. Government finished the road in less than 2 months, everywhere is now very smooth, Korope and Keke operators refused to bring back their old price. No fuel hike, no queue at the fuel stations, smooth road yet they didn't bring down the price. The NURTW are doing their own but the yellow bus operators are demons too. |

The touts, alayes, owomida miscreants, illegal revenue collectors just ripping struggling citizens of their hard earned income @every nooks and crannies of Lagos without probity, accountability and decency is really worrisome This is the effects of instituting a large swathes of anti-social elements by the Capone himself in a large commercial city and former capital of a nation. Everyone feels the heat. |

These informal toll system introduced by various transport unions in Lagos is not just disturbing, it is auditioning for a comedy series nobody asked for. Even more alarming is the fact that many of these toll collectors have absolutely nothing to do with transportation. They are simply an organised cartel of physically strong, chronically unemployed illiterates who wake up daily to invent taxes with the confidence of a national budget committee. For commuters trapped in intra-city transport, this madness hits hardest, as fares mysteriously hike because of these touts. Take a simple journey from Ikeja to Ikoyi, for example. You cannot board a single vehicle straight through because these men have neatly divided the route into exclusive territories. Miss a payment in any zone, and you risk being forcefully reminded, through noise, threats, or chaos, that you have entered the wrong kingdom without tribute. At this point, the only sane escape from this circus appears to be ride-hailing services like Uber, where at least the extortion comes bundled with a receipt. That said, another mystery worth investigating is why every analysis of this problem always zooms in on Lagos. Are we pretending that places like Aba, Onitsha, Owerri, and others are immune to similar, or even worse, forms of daylight robbery? Is it now a crime to enlighten the public about arbitrariness outside Lagos so commuters can prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and financially? Or is it that whatever happens in those places does not matter? Do human beings not reside there as well, or have they been silently reclassified as supporting characters in the Lagos drama series? One really wonders. |

Many charges Nigerians pay daily never enter the official fiscal system, creating what he described as “financial leakage” that worsens inflationary pressure and the cost of living.NURTW, RTREAN thugs are not accountable to no one? This must be a silly joke. And the central govt is still busy imposing choking taxes on the citizens? Then they all claim ignorant of this hardship? Meanwhile MC Oluomo children are in the US. How will his lieutenants not be living big.Yet you wants people to pay tax? Let the citizens breathe! Otherwise the French peasant revolution is going to happen in Nigeria one day |

benardtotti:Yes but sad that road and motorpark toutism is now part of our national life. However Lagos set the template long time ago because these touts were willing political thugs bred by their demigod there. Remember that Lagos too under Tinubu also set up the template of retired governors lavishing themselves with the resources of their state to the detriments of development post retirement. A bad precedence has long been set. |

madridguy:Where have you ever seen the revenue accruing to the NURTW or tout organization in the Federation account? Monies that nobody is accountable for? These tout organization were created mainly to fatten up the pockets of some irresponsible people just for their political patronage. It is the same NURTW court that MC Oluomo banished from Lagos roads to establish the reformed agberoes-in-blue suit? Abeg swerve! |

madridguy:Now you are talking same thing as I earlier said that you were opposing. This is an informal money spinning machine for thugs because of political patronage not for any development of the city of Lagos. This is why it continue to deteriorate in cost and standard of living for the populace. |

I just posted about this on another thread for those who say Nigerians don't want to pay taxes or don't pay enough taxes. A levy is a tax. DoTheNeedful:Many of you are also disingenious when you make it seem like Nigerians don't pay many indirect taxes. Some people think Nigerians do not pay tax, so they focus mainly on income tax, but this view is not correct and misleading. When people buy goods and services, they pay Value Added Tax (VAT), fuel levies, customs duties on imported items, and other indirect taxes. These taxes are built into prices, so everyone pays them whether they are employed or not. The taxes you pay for your government's negligence on providing 24/7 electricity is huge. When government NEPA fails and you buy fuel for your generator, you are still paying tax. When you receive electricity bills with VAT and charges, you are paying tax. Everyday Nigerians pay indirect taxes when they buy food and household items (VAT), buy fuel or take transport (fuel levies), make phone calls or use data (telecoms levies), buy imported goods - fashion wigs, cars, phones, or spare parts (customs and import duties), stay in hotels or eat at restaurants (consumption and hotel taxes), watch movies or attend events (entertainment tax), send money or sign agreements (stamp duties), pay rent or utility bills (environmental and waste levies), and even when transport fares rise because taxes are built into costs, all without being directly told they are paying tax. You pay for higher cost of food because the transportation cost already takes the taxes into delivery. If you have a shop, you pay market levies, these are all taxes. You pay LAWMA or PSP, read the fine print. Those touts that stop buses are collecting money. That money is tax! Anything due, levies, fees is tax. When you ask yourself where the money is going to, if it is going to government, even if it is collected by a consultant, it is TAX. The money you will pay for tinted permit is a tax. I attached an image here to show you how much those boys collect on the road and why MC Oluomo can be powerful. They are now saying that state governments should ban such collection of taxes on the road. The government focuses more on income tax because it is easier to track formal workers and businesses under the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) system. A large part of Nigeria’s economy is informal, making direct income tax collection difficult. As a result, indirect taxes often contribute significantly to government revenue, even though many people are unaware they are paying them. In 2023, Nigeria collected about ₦3.64 trillion in VAT (indirect tax ≈ 43%) and ₦4.89 trillion in company income tax (direct tax ≈ 57%), based on NBS-reported figures.

madridguy:you still think its the fault of the drivers abi?? you dont give people the loophole to misbehave becasue once they have that chance, they wont stop..its why govt is there to think deep, plan in a super pessimistic way before implementing anything cos capitalist are waiting to capitalize on the weakness and failure of the government...it is simple cause and effect...to every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.. the thing is most of us in the country including those making the policy and the so called intellectuals defending them only focus on the symptoms and not the disease, inshort we are too superficial and cant ever solve complex problem because of the thinking and planning it will require |

Richtaiwo:the antithesis to lagos is always calling anambra, owerri..we are always thinking through tribes on everything... lagos is the king of all state and its normal to use it as yardstick cos if everything succeed in lagos then it can succeed anywhere else..using lagos as yardstick is the right thing to do and lagosian should be proud for that and not seeing it as an attack to welcome tribal hatred everytime |

Tinubu uses them during elections. They servd no other purpose. Marwa cleared them completely from the streets. A day before the 29th May, 1999 transfer, they reappeared on the streets. Their nemesis was finally gone. |

benardtotti:The "it happens everywhere argument". That a crime happens everywhere is justification for its happening in Lagos? For your information, agberoism was introduced in Lagos by the Tinubu Administration. It was from Lagos Island it spread to other parts of Lagos and then other parts of Nigeria. Some miscreants tried to introduce it during the timevof Buba Marwa, he rounded them all up, and rehabilitated (locked them up) them in Epe. |

And like several other commodities, transportation costs also reduced as prices of others reduced, but in your land, it never reduces. |
