God bless you - you see one thing synonymous with this generation, we have too many ignorant people who parade themselves as knowledgeable people- these ae people who were back-benchers in their school days, people who couldn't understand basic things, lacks comprehension- But have found their voice behind the keyboard where they air idiotic comments and nonsensical contributions.
Engage them on a one vs one discussion, you will understand how ignorant they are.
Bro, no one is more knowledgeable than individuals of this generation.

However, intentional misinformation is one problem prevalent with same said generation.

Just listen to yourself!

If she has been paying this high VAT, why is she now crying out loudly?

Some people just support evil because it's done by their people.
Dude VAT has been in existence since forever, unless you've been making purchase from boutiques, lounge, etc.

Maybe na only market shop you dey shop from.
7.5% have been in existence forever...

No
It would affect the poor more than the rich
Manufacturers, CEOs etc, they would be forced to increase prices of their produced commodities and services, even importers
This would drastically increase prices of things in the coming days
U are absolutely correct.
100000 correct

That is what most people don't know or understand that all those people u mentioned will pour their frustration on the poor people.

This is a sad situation

You're either being mischievous or ignorant, even bother, due hate and prejudice. Now ask yourself, is VAT new in Nigeria?
What I think more Nigerians should be concerned about is accountability, and value for money. For me, it's felony to resist paying my tax.

Something is obviously wrong with some people!

Vat (7.2% on purchases), increased from 5% to 7.2% during Buhari administration, has always been in existence and everybody has always been paying it. Which one is "she paid over 400k on 6.2m purchases" as if vat was just introduced today.

You people should display some level of exposure and education and stop bringing your ignorance to the public space. Go to any structured outlet and buy stuff and check your receipt and see if you would not see vat. It's just because, most times, it's built into the cost and rolling rounded off as a figure. That's why you don't know. Besides, many of you prefer buying stuffs from the roadside rather than entering into stores to make your purchases.

I doubt if you even know that most items in those stores are cheaper than what you buy on the road.

Noooo vat was scrapped for essential day to day goods.
Let the "influenza" show you the item bought, its luxury goods which will definitely attract VAT of about 10% or thereabout

You’re capping nonsense. Is VAT a new tax? If she had made the same purchases last year, would she not have paid the exact same amount as VAT? So, why will any manufacturer increase price in January over a VAT law that has been in effect since the 90’s?

Again, are you aware that with effect from 1st of January, 2026, Company Income Tax has reduced from 30% to 25%? So, will manufacturers whose CIT has been reduced force any price increment on their customers? Does that make any sense? Are you even aware that companies with an annual turnover of < 100m are now fully exempt from CIT? So, why will such companies push any increment to customers?
Thank you.
Aot of people are just misleading the public about this tax issues.
VAT that did not increase, someone is now posting it as if it was a new thing.

What kind of people am I sharing country with?

Learn the difference between CIT, PIT, and VAT. I don't blame influencers, I actually blame people that follow them.

If they charge you VAT, give them your TIN, to credit your account. That way you make proper analysis to the tax man at the end of your FY.
Please elaborate further

Wetin consign me. Thank God I am self employed, doing business.
We simply pass the VAT on to the public consumers. Una neva see anything, Una go pay tax tire.

VAT means Value Added Tax.
It is an indirect tax charged on the value added to goods and services at each stage of production and distribution, but it is ultimately borne by the final consumer.
Simple explanation
Whenever a business sells goods or services, it:
adds VAT to the selling price
collects VAT from the customer
remits the VAT to the government
How VAT works (easy example)
Manufacturer sells goods for ₦100 + VAT
Wholesaler sells for ₦150 + VAT
Retailer sells to final consumer for ₦200 + VAT
Each business pays VAT only on the value it added, not the full amount.
VAT in Nigeria
Current VAT rate: 7.5%
Administered by: Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)
Applies to most:
Goods
Services
Some items are VAT-exempt or zero-rated (e.g. basic food items, medical services, educational services).
Key points to remember
VAT is not a profit tax
Businesses act as VAT collection agents
The final consumer bears the cost
VAT is different from Company Income Tax (CIT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT)

This your narrative that the tax is for the rich, not for the poor, is totally false, because it's a deceptive propaganda from your endemic corrupt entities in government, it ought not to be a hard thing, for Nigerians to understand, that in any society the rich ones produce whatever the poor ones consumes, imports whatever the poor ones consumes, and sometimes they also employ the poor ones in their midsts .
The poor will always suffer more than the rich as regards any hostile policy of the government, because the rich ones can easily pass over their incurred over-bloated taxes/expenses to the end consumers - the poor ones.
However to pay tax is never a bad thing in a country where there is transparent accountability, unlike Nigeria where corruption reigns supreme.
Pls ask your looting entities what they have done with huge accrued funds of fuel subsidy removal, after all their promises before the fuel subsidy removal.
Taxes/Revenues + zero accountability= more corruption, zero development, and embarrassing stagnacy of the nation.
They should fix corruption before taxations !

Did u ask urself why that lady cried out?
Do u want to tell me that since last year that she has not been paying her tax?

This is just the genesis wait for the first quarter of the year and don't forget to monitor the cost of items in the market.

Watch as manufacturers , importers will take advantage of the situation.

In a country like our where there is no price control and the government is still creating another confusion in minds of people.

Maybe u will go the village to explain to the villagers about the new tax law.
U go explain tire.

Don’t they get anything from the big companies that are taxed huh

But the unfortunate thing is that most businesses or companies collect VAT from their customers but they will never remit, I once work in a telecommunications company that have never remit VAT for more than 3 years. As a staff you there not raise the issue or you will be fired, even the wife of the MD is a lawyer, the law makers are even the law breakers because they know more you do. Sorry for citizens.

See, the billionaires are business men and women, they are the importers and manufactures.

If government tax them, they will just push the tax to you the poor man to pay by increase prices of commodities. What was sold for 1k, becomes 1.2k or 1.5k.

Now who will cry? You the poor man or the wealthy manufacturer or importer?

Every tax goes back to the consumers! You pay their taxes for them.
