Every successful empire in history have had to do something inhumane to get ahead, if history is a good pointer the only advantage the victor has over the vanquished is the innate ability to do what's morally reprehensible.

Take for example the Japs vs the US during WW2
The Japs were monsters when it comes to morally reprehensible acts, they left an unparalleled level of carnage in the Pacific but they met a more evil monster in the US, a monster so evil it'll watch the Pacific burn to get ahead. That's what it takes to be a victor and the US understands this principle.
