Ademola Lookman has played down reports of a rift with Victor Osimhen following their brief on-field exchange during Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Atalanta forward dismissed suggestions of tension between the Super Eagles teammates, insisting the incident was nothing more than a routine discussion during the match.

Speaking after the Round of 16 encounter, Lookman expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s progress at the tournament when asked how he was enjoying the AFCON experience.

“It’s been great. The team is improving every single day. I scored goals today,” Lookman said, reflecting on both his individual contribution and the collective growth of the squad.

Addressing the widely discussed exchange with Osimhen, Lookman revealed that he had not spoken with the Napoli striker since the incident but downplayed its significance.

“No, I haven’t seen him yet,” he said.

Clarifying what transpired on the pitch, Lookman was emphatic that there was no disagreement between the duo.

“Nothing happened. We were just discussing on the pitch, that’s it,” he stated.

When pressed on whether the issue needed to be addressed to maintain harmony within the team, the Super Eagles winger questioned the attention it had attracted.

“I don’t know what the big issue is,” he added.

Looking ahead to Nigeria’s next challenge, Lookman stressed that the team’s focus remains firmly on progressing further in the competition.

“The finals of the game is something to look forward to. Another big battle awaits us, and we need to be ready,” he said.

Nigeria will face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals as the Super Eagles continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.

Good one by Lookman. A very mature response. Oshimen too should show his maturity.
All in all, na team harmony be the Koko.

No wonder Eric Chelle banned Nigerian journalists from training sessions. They pick up on any tiny issue and create gossip material out of it. Hopelessly incompetent lot.
Thank goodness Lookman is intelligent and didn't fall for their BS

Just couldn't comprehend how a lot of people are missing the point Victor was trying to prove...

The goal here is to score as many goals as possible against any opponent and at any given chance...

Shebi, it is Mozambique team that's not that good that's why it looks like the Nigerian team is good... Let them meet with better and faster players of other countries, then they will understand what Osimhen is saying.

When you have a good chance to score a goal, you shoot and score.. Now when you do not have a good chance for a goal, but your teammate is standing at a good position to score, you pass the ball to him immediately and not dribble till you pass the ball to him...

This is one point with the Spanish national team, it doesn't matter who scores, the aim is to score as many goals as possible... That's why they can win 5 to 6 goals ahead because they are more particular about the outcome than the ego of any player...

That people are bashing Osimhen today shows that Nigerians do not really have the capacity to process information and we are only about if something is working you don't need to improve on it...

Just imagine, if we were playing a team like Senegal who have had more comeback goals in this tournament than any other team, and you have a chance like that and you did not bury it...

That's when people will now come to blame Lookman for not passing to Osinmen when he should....

Very matured response though he and Akor started playing selfishly after the third goal, Osimhen's outburst was uncalled for. This is the third time he is having a controversy around him in this tournament. It's high time Chelle grows some balls and start benching him

This thing is nothing, just a normal emotion, is just outsiders reading meaning to it. These guys are so closed and they both worked closely as team mates and friends

Don’t justify what is wrong

Despite that Victors complains are valid, the pitch is not the right place to vent that, there are other places to discuss that, he’s must learn to be a professional, absolutely not on the pitch with the entire world watching you.

Lookman is emotionally intelligent. He is wise too. The focus should be advancing to the next stages and bringing home the trophy...
That being said. Thay need work as a team. Pass the ball to the any player with likely chances to score even if nah defender...
All these ego and pride should stop in our national team. Only the captain should instruct the players. Any unruly attitude should attract a ban from national team henceforth . Naija is bless with many talented players

All those trying to cry more than the bereaved can now rest. grin

GanagiBitrus:
Much ado about nothing.
The outburst was driven by his passion to excel for himself & his country.

The coach will talk to him, apologies will be made, & the team moves on. ✌️

Ademola Lookman: an epitome of maturity!

His response was measured, cool, calm and calculated.

He says that what transpired between him and VO was just a storm in a teacup.

No cause for alarm!

No bitterness!

Just a banter between brothers!

Lookman was being diplomatic and professional in his responses. He knows that there was an issue but he doesn't want to stoke the flame because if he did it will affect the team in their subsequent afcon outings.
Kudos to the lad.

But nothing really happens. Nigerians are too reactionary.

Internal leadership kowei. That's how team progress is achieved and Lookman understood. He know what Oshimem wanted. Why are Nigerians always crying world. Them go create dissonance in this team by instigating bad needless blood and na them go complain pass.
Re: AFCON: Lookman Reacts To Osimhen's Outburst (Video) by PlayerMeji: 11:04am On Jan 06
If you are looking for a politically-correct individual, it is not in the field of play when you are at the heat of the game... So you might say it was too obvious but my brother, that's the one place and only place Osimhen could have corrected that...

Re: AFCON: Lookman Reacts To Osimhen's Outburst (Video) by Empresa: 11:07am On Jan 06
Osimhen cannot try this nonsense at Galatasaray, the image of the country should come first before personal ego or ambition.

Lookman has been a superb player and I don't see a replacement for him but Akor can comfortably replace Osimhen. Osimhen needs to respect his team mates, that he earns more money shouldn't make him arrogant.
Re: AFCON: Lookman Reacts To Osimhen's Outburst (Video) by Julibet: 11:09am On Jan 06
Osimhen should be someone the younger players look up to and inspire to be but dude even if he's good should learn how to calm down. I dy even dy hear him voice from my TV undecided
Re: AFCON: Lookman Reacts To Osimhen's Outburst (Video) by VeeVeeMyLuv(f): 11:09am On Jan 06
Lol grin
Chai I pity Osihmen

I don't know if it is the coach tactic. His emphasis is on midfielders and wingers.

Or the evolution of modern Day football that is reducing influence of center forwards. See Halaand only two touches for a whole 90 minutes all resulting in goals. And he is happy and everyone is happy grin.

May be Osihmen has to change character atimes and come out to play. Otherwise if stay professional in position, one of these days him leg no go see ball for the whole 90 minutes. Because this team super Eagles team is skillful and you have to show skills to show you belong.

Chelle like creativity, he like players to express themselves. The player should tone his stiffness a little bit. See Onuachu .

Again the player has to understand that within this 90 minutes everyone including the other 10 players and not to forget the coach wants to shine. So they should learn to manage the 90 minutes amicably.

I understand from Osihmen point of view that Discipline is more important though,

The team handler and team should realize that there some teams against which these showboating can prove to be counterproductive, very costly, and time wasting.

Against such, the team has to be very professional, ruthless disciplined and decisive.

It is people like you who would complain the most when we lose..

So for you mind nah, when you are playing ball, you will be calculating in your mind how we are in the 70th minute and we already are 3 goals up so we can do as we like on the pitch...?

You see the problem with people like you, you are always hateful of someone who knows what he or she wants...

Osimhen knows we need to keep scoring as much goals as we can... If you are a leader, you will understand what Osimhen was doing...

What wins a match is not how well you played, or how fanciful your footworks were but how much goals you were able to score...

Yesterday, we played with a timid side, when you play against dominant sides like Egypt or Morocco who is the host nation, or Senegal you will understand that every little chance that you have to score, you must utilize it to the fullest....

Lookman is socially matured to the core. He deflected Osimhen’s emotional outburst from the media so as not to bring distractions and negativity to the team. Osimhen can learn a lot from players like this. The global coaching networks, scouts and media are watching!

Football is made up of Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological (emotions, social, etc) factors with each one equally important.
Osimhen need to work on the psychological side of is game so bigger clubs in England or Spain can come for him. At the moment, he’s psychological immatured to move to bigger leagues.
