NOUN is the best when it comes to distance learning. I just started a program in NOUN and the only regret I have is why I haven't tried it since. And they are more recognized abroad.
You are right, my wife did her masters there in public health

Nigerian universities are still far from ready for distance learning. The ABU issue is just one example; many other institutions have faced similar or worse challenges. Our education system has a long road ahead, and meaningful improvement does not seem likely even in the next 20 years.

This is sad. You ought to have ditched them for another less stressful uni. You shouldn't have allowed it to take precedence over your job now.

Nigerian Universities unnecessarily make life hard for students. They need to do away with that backward mentality of suffering before you get it. It doesn't make the certificate any more prestigious.
I learnt the hard way. First and second semester I took so many permissions at work, sometimes during break at work I'll tell someone to cover for me to attend a 2-hour class etc. Laters colleagues started sabotaging and pushed an issue that arise on me to make my absence obvious (office politics).

At school, classmate thinks am working, making things uneasy to prove a point about them having to resign so you must resign to have a smooth ride. Things go on in school in the absence of which they won't include you (you lose marks).

At home. I was trying to pay rent, pay school fees, satisfy family members, plan a way to eat well as work demands food and if I skip a meal for just 3 days I'll be lean because I work in a chemical company, so many hazards, jumping transport, (trekking / trekking etc) ... Gosh, my nightmare..

Personally, I started befriending a lady just to get info on what was happening in class. You ask me if I'm in love? I wasn't even interested in any relationship but that is just what I have to do. If I ask other classmates about class, they will either lie or say nothing is happening that is significant to my grade (big lie, these people are setting me up to fail, so many assignments to turn in). My girlfriend gives me all the info.

I survived the first and second semesters. In the third semester my Supervisor wants me in school all day, you in the lab or not in the lab. She doesn't care if you are working or not. Later it dawned on me that if I don't comply she will fail me for the seminar and project.

Meanwhile, at work, they are going to shortlist people for sacking to reduce production cost and my name keeps appearing due to permissions and complaints.

The white man sacked me and gave me the option to resign voluntarily instead of sacking me. I chose resign.

Thank God I have saved enough.

I did mine and I graduated since 2020, I already collected my certificate also.

The the venue was Unilag, then later Yaya Abatan in Ogba.

It was an OK experience. Better than my M. SC experience at UNILAG
pls was distance learning written on your certificate?

Something about this poster looks familiar to me!

That aside, their MBA program and other distance learning program is quite good, especially when the immediate past director was in-charge.

Now with this current director, many wonderful things have been reversed. It's painful. If the current tide is not stemmed, they'll go back to being average when it comes to Distance Learning

Now comparing their program to other Universities, especially first gens, they are far ahead. They and NOUN pioneered postgraduate Distance Learning. However compared to NOUN, it doesn't come cheap. But cheaper than other like Uniport, UNILAG etc.

So if you truly want to work, progress and study, Nigeria now has many institutions offering DLC. So prospective students can either explore them or look for other universities that offer DLC programs.

Here is a list, but please, DLC/E-learning program is NOT limited to this list. Also note that although other programs both undergraduate and postgraduate are offered in the Distance Learning mode, this list is more aligned to MBA and similar professional masters program.

-Federal
ABU
Uniport
UNILAG
NOUN
UNN
Etc

-State
Unizik
Tasued
Etc.

-Private
Nile University
Covenant
JABU
Iconic Open University
Etc.
Miva
I didn't know Unizik was a State uni

No they’re not. We are in same set. Same WhatsApp group. They probably created their accounts out of frustration ‘ cause of how relatable the post is. The review coincided with an abrupt change in their exam venues yesterday. Talk about the school’s inconsiderate appraoch to learners.

ONline Learning has come to stay,. we keep improving on it. Since it cheaper than aboard online learning.
hrm93:
I’ve just completed my first semester in the MBA program at the Ahmadu Bello University Distance Learning (ABUDLC), and here’s an honest review for anyone considering the program.

Onboarding & Welcome Experience
The program started fairly, but students were expected to figure out key things (like WhatsApp groups and tutor access) by checking forums on the learning management system. This information should have been clearly communicated in a welcome email.
Score: 5/10

Lecturers & Teaching
The lecturers in the first semester (they tried sha but my 2nd semester proved it was a set u) were generally fair and reasonably active. Engagement was frequent enough, and the teaching quality was decent overall.
Score: 6/10

Examinations (First Semester)
I wrote my exams on the Lagos mainland at JKK Building, Anthony. Day 1 was very disorganized, although things improved on Day 2. However, when you factor in the emotional and mental stress (especially for working professionals) the experience was far from ideal. Institutions of this caliber should be proactive, not reactive, particularly when they claim to be shaping Africa’s future business leaders.
Score: 4/10

Examinations (Second Semester – Current Situation)
As I prepare for second-semester exams, I received an email just two days before the papers informing us that the Lagos center has been moved from Anthony to Abule Egba. For working students, this last-minute change is extremely disruptive.
Score: 1/10

Grading System
Some lecturers still operate with the “5/5 is for God” mentality, even in 2025, in an era where AI and modern learning tools are redefining education. This approach feels outdated and discouraging.
Score: 6/10

Final Thoughts
If you’re considering this program and have a high tolerance for stress and surprise changes, then this might work for you. At times, it honestly feels like a toxic relationship, you praise them twice for enabling remote learning, then spend eight times dealing with avoidable frustration just to enjoy that privilege.

Won’t recommend to anyone I love.

I have changed jobs twice. Though not directly linked to the MBA. But it does help especially if you are applying for a managerial role.

Nigeria needs to step up their education system, Nigeria is still behind in many system especially this online thing. I did my degree in the US online and it was smooth. Except the stress of reading and doing assignments. My school was in the state of Arizona while I lived in Texas and that gave me extra advantage on assignment hours. Where I live is 2 hours ahead of my school time, so I had 2 hours extra for my assignment submission. Everything was organized, you get your class work weekly and you know the due time to submit assignment or else you will lose some score.

All I know is that Nigerian graduates—I mean, those that passed through universities and universities passed through them(not cultists and time wasters)—are among the best in the world. Those stresses are part of the training.
I rest my case.

I had to log into my account to drop this because I really don’t like it when people are being misled.

The review I saw feels biased and like a one off experience. It shouldn’t be used to judge or criticize the entire program.

Changing a venue this one time does not warrant a bad review for me. That’s extreme. I have written exams in both Lagos mainland and Port Harcourt. The venues may not have been central, yes, but they were not difficult to locate if you ask questions.

WhatsApp groups are already on the LMS. Most times, students do not search properly. Even quizzes and assignments are clearly set on the LMS.

The lectures are rich, and the lecturers are kind and friendly. That, I give to them. Even when students ask off questions or need clarification, they are patient and willing to help.

ABU is actually doing amazing work when it comes to quality higher education. One of the biggest advantages is the flexibility. You learn at your own pace, from the comfort of your home.

Your assessments and assignments can be done from anywhere. It’s only the exams that require a physical location. There are over 29 exam venues, so you can easily choose one close to you. These venues aren’t owned by ABU, so if there are internal issues at any venue, I believe they change it to ensure the exams go smoothly.

Even if you don’t make it in time for an exam, there are still opportunities to take it later sometimes during the week or over the weekend. They’re quite flexible, not rigid or unnecessarily strict. I’ve been late for exams before. I also couldn’t mentally handle a 7 course load last semester, so I deferred 2 courses, which I’m now taking this semester without any issues.

Even the NOUN that someone else was praising, I have a friend who studies at NOUN and it’s not as flexible. Each time she wants to register for a course, an exam, or anything of that sort, she has to travel back to locate the office, which I honestly don’t think is flexible enough.

Meanwhile, at ABU, after your initial admission process, you don’t need to go anywhere again until exam time.

I was recommended by a friend who completed the program, and based on my experience so far, I will definitely recommend ABU Distance Learning.
Re: My First-semester Review Of The MBA Program At Ahmadu Bello University (distance by ecolime(m): 5:41am On Jan 09
The only stress I see here is the sudden change in exam venue and this can be worked around.

The others are clearly exaggerated and seem like calculated attacks.

That being said, ABU can still do better.

This writeup is overly sensational.

The only problem with ABU is the rigours of the academic exercises. It's more rigorous academically compared to even undergraduate programmes.

If you can't study hard, just go and "Buy" MBA from all those online foreign mushroom universities because ABU is not for you.

You’re so right. Honestly, I wouldn’t even call it rigorous. It’s nothing compared to the Master’s program I once tried doing while working. That one was pure stress. Impromptu lectures, cancelled lectures, compulsory textbooks (some I’d already used in my undergrad), endless group presentations, suprise tests, waiting around for lecturers, copying notes, etc name it. I almost lost clients and business deals because of it. As a working professional, you really have no business adding all that stress.

Still, I tried to push through, taking exams, meeting my supervisor for approvals at every stage(sometimes you go and he may not be in the office), submitting chapters, facing endless corrections, but it got too much and I had to discontinue. I was even supposed to resit two courses because I missed the tests , didn’t buy the books and ended with missing scripts. And no one even checked in. No emails, no calls, nothing. It’s been 3 years now.

But at ABU, it was a completely different story. My supervisor actually called me when my project wasn’t moving just to check if I needed help. God bless her, she really pushed me. I finished my project and even acknowledged her in my work because she genuinely kept me going.

And the results? In the first and second semester I had back-to-back CGPAs of 4.3 something. Something I couldn’t even pull off during my undergrad or that other Master’s attempt. Because here I’m more relaxed to study.

Plus, it’s super affordable. No unexpected dues, no hidden costs, etc. Straightforward, manageable, and actually supportive.
