I drove through the Lagos calabar coastal highway recently and i did not fail to notice the demolition notice written on many beautiful structures adjacent the road on both sides. Govt asking for 150 metres clearance from the highway. That is ridiculous, 150 metres is like 4 full plots of land, what do they intend to use such land clearance for? I was told this was a directive from the president. As much as I welcome the idea of the coastal road, it makes no sense to destroy people's property for no just cause. I saw beautiful houses, fuel station, high rises marked for demolition from marwa to okun ajah on the island which could cover nothing less than a 1000 properties and structures in a small state like Lagos. This is pure waste of resources by the government. I want to assume the president does not understand what 150 m really translates to but what of the minister of works. Average clearance on highways in the US is between 5 and 40 meters. WTH do you need 4 plot clearance for? Or is someone trying to steal land by proxy? |

horlando30 post=13[/quote:Citation required! In same US no one will want to even build or live adjacent to a highway. Also US states have one of the stringent building regulations and it takes years to even get building approvals . Also, 150m is equivalent to space distancing between 3 street lights. How is this in anyway massive? Setbacks are more for the safety for those living adjacent to highways. Even Federal highways in Lagos had setbacks when they were built but encroachment and lack of enforcement by relevant urban planning officials under military era saw to encroachment beyond the setback. Go to Abuja and you will see setback as high as 300m on major highways that are religiously enforced. |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by horlando30(op): 7:00am On Jan 09 |
DomPerignon:Well the standard horizontal clearance for interstate highway in the US equivalent of the coastal is 36 feet (about 10 metres). Mind you the US is 10 times bigger than Nigeria. This makes no sense, this area is already built up. The highway is what is new so you cant destroy peoples property because of needless clearance. What safety? The way to ensure safety when you are building a new highway in a built up area is to build tall fences around the highway to wall off conmunities. Thats how its done in many cities in the US like chicago, indiana, texas etc. Abuja is nothing compared to lagos in terms of size and density. So you can take as much clearance as you like there. And most roads were built before hand there. |

DomPerignon:Please do not misrepresent facts here, where in the US is highway clearance up to 150m, where bro? Do you really know how long 150m is? That's almost 500 feet . In US the highest you can get 130 feet which translate to about 40 meters. It is even rare to see highway kickbacks up to 100feet which is like 30 meters or there about. In essence 150m kickback is sheer wickedness to fellow citizens |

Mabuggi88:I am.demanding a citation for your bogus claim that set backs in the US are as low as 5m Do you know how small 5m? |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by DomPerignon: 7:31am On Jan 09 |
horlando30:Nigeria is not US and if we decided to have even a km set back its fine by me. Same US allows gays to get married, should we now accept gay marriages because they are legal and protected by US law? There are a thousand and one things better to discus than the setback on coastal highway which you obidients have been opposed to since its inception and ongoing construction. Go and focus on your SE. Last I checked Coastal highway is not passing through your SE nor is it taking up any of your lands. And the people of SS all resoundingly support this project. Your opinions, rants and frustrations this landmark project is irrelevant and not be welcomed. Face your SE. |

DomPerignon:You must be silly to assume i am from the SE. After showing you evidence that the clearance is senseless and wicked, you suddenly resulted to throwing insult. You dont care even if its 1km clearance, ofcourse why would you since you have zero achievements and investments such that you will have properties to be demolished foolishly by some incompetent government workers. Not everything is politics and "you dont put mouth in what you have zero competence". This thread was not opened for folks like you but possibly the minister, the president or their handlers might come across it and seeing how things are done in other climes might have a rethink. |

DomPerignon:Do you people see the wickedness of these Tinubu supporters. He has left the subject matter that should have been enlightening and educative and has introduced sentiment and tribalism because he doesn't know what he is defending. He might not even come from Lagos state. The nonsense you guys are supporting today will one day come to hunt you. |

| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by DomPerignon: 7:58am On Jan 09 |
overall90:Every building earmarked for demolition plus those already demolished have seen to their owners duly compensate. The people affected by this road are not complaining rather it is one embittered and ever bad belle Obidient who have been opposing this project from beginning without any coherent argument why they are against it that are still crying over this project. Well, I know the reason you guys oppose this project is because: 1. You see the coastal communities developing when this project is complete and this is painful for you since you want those lands pristine and empty so that whenever you do your annexation you all can have vacant prime coastal lands to occupy. 2. You see this road as building direct commercial, cultural and physical direct connections between the SS and SW forever alienating you in your landlocked evil forests. If you like cry from now till you die, the road project is a blessing and boost to the long delayed economic development of the SS which has been feeding your parasitic ingrates in that your barren SE. |

helinues:So says someone who is living off crumbs. Una shame dey shame me. |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by DomPerignon: 9:31am On Jan 09 |
Yorubasareslave:The owners of the building earmarked for demolition are not complaining as they know they will be compensated with the current market value of their properties. The ones whose homes have been demolished are not crying as they have since cashed out. Also, there is a law that grants the Federal govt exclusive rights to all coastal setbacks up to 150m from the very edge of the ocean. FG is even being magnanimous by paying anything because the properties encroached on federal land in the first place and none of the owners have a Federal issued Certificate of Occupancy. Their lawyers have briefed them on going to court to challenge the FG reclaiming their land. If anything , the FG has been kind enough to pay compensation at current market value to property owners along the path of this project. So rest. Why you landlocked hither dwelling natives are so obsessed with a project that is not in anyway connected to your region is what I don't understand. Care to tell us why this long overdue project that will fast track economic development and promote economic growth in all coastal states in the SS is paining you ? |

DomPerignon:DomPerignon, emancipate yourself from tribal and ethnic bigotry. I promise your life will never be the same. Continue on this path, however, and you are headed toward self-destruction. |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by DomPerignon: 9:37am On Jan 09 |
horlando30:My friend you are from the SE and an Obidient bigot for that matter because these are the only two criteria you will see present in anyone opposing this ongoing project. Nothing you say will convince me otherwise. Even your Agulu fraudster condemned this project from the very beginning without even bothering to give a cogent and sensible reason why he is opposed to bringing much needed and over due development to the coastal parts of the region that has been laying the golden egg since 1970. So save your lame lies. |

| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by AMINDA: 10:29am On Jan 09 |
What you saw was simply one man's insatiable greed. What did you think the recent quarrel with Sanwo-olu was about? After awarding 15 trillion naira of our common patrimony to cronies to do a coastal road, he's aiming to grab 150m setback on each side for himself and friends. The federal ministry in-charge of lands and survey has since been moved to the presidency for closer supervision. Owning half of Lagos, including Eko Atlantic is clearly not enough. So dark the con of man! |

| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by Bodun88: 11:30am On Jan 09 |
There is a video online where the Surveyor General was saying the first 5km of the coastal road was granted a waiver by the president because of the density of properties on that stretch. I want to assume the notice was done by overzealous team members or is a ploy for the property owners to pay some sort of fine or fee. Some of the properties affected have washed notice from their fence. Fingers crossed, because carrying out the demolition would be senseless. |

AMINDA:Tinubu doesn't own 5% of Lagos, if we are talking about those that own properties in Lagos, Dangote will come before Tinubu. If Lagos indigenes in their magnanimity allowed Dangote a Hausa man to own property and investments in Lagos, who is the Mr nobody, the karanbaniyakuya that should complain of Tinubu own property in Lagos? |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by AMINDA: 2:16pm On Jan 09 |
Ttalk:"Magnanimity", "allowed"... where are those words coming from with regards to Dangote? Does he own any land that he didn't pay for? That was how you propagandists lied about giving Dangote free land for refinery until it became public that he coughed out good money for it. How much is your tin-god paying to possess Eko Atlantic and 150m setbacks on both sides along the entire stretch of the coastal road? |
| Re: Senseless Demolition On Coastal Road by Ttalk: 2:17pm On Jan 09 |
horlando30:You are lying with your 150meter clearance from the highway of coastal road. I challenge you to prove any official document or residential accounts that stated that government demanded for 150m clearance. It is the policy of FG of Nigeria to give clearance parts on every highway and the stipulated length from the highway is 45m in each of the sides of the road, the total of both sides which amount to 90m. Where did you see 150m? This applies to FG roads across Nigeria, just like same observed in second Niger bridge so also is applicable to Lagos -Calabar coastal road. I know you deliberately increases the ROW to 150m to justify and spread your hate for the government. However, while doing that, you have forgotten that many property owners along that corridor are on Nairaland reading your distorted information.
